Labour voters support trans ruling, first poll reveals - survey

The Supreme Court ruling that trans women are not legally women has been backed by a majority of Labour voters.

A poll of more than 2,500 people found that 42 per cent of Labour voters agreed with the Supreme Court judgement that transgender women are not legally women under the Equality Act.

A third – 32 per cent – disagreed with it, while 12 per cent did not know.

The findings, the first major polling since the ruling, suggest that Sir Keir Starmer’s previously equivocal statements on transgender women are out of touch with the majority of his party voters.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

Hoardasurass · 30/04/2025 07:00

Hmm that's only 84%, off to read the article to find out how the other 16% voted

WearyLady · 30/04/2025 07:06

In fact, with the exception of the Green Party, it looks like the majority of people who expressed an opinion in all parties actually agreed with the ruling. That’s good to hear.

RoyalCorgi · 30/04/2025 07:08

The question has dubious phrasing - it says "women-only spaces CAN exclude trans women" but the ruling was that women-only spaces MUST exclude trans women.

DuchessofReality · 30/04/2025 07:10

It is good but I am surprised about the Labour percentage of ‘disagree’. I also find it interesting that don’t know and neutral are quite a large percentage of some groups.

and the greens are a pretty small slice of the electorate.
Overall, the public backed the ruling, with 59 per cent in favour, and 18 per cent disagreeing – a three to one majority.

In a break with the Government position, Mr Sobel wrote in a blog post that he was “a firm believer of self determination, self ID and allowing all to live their lives as long as they do not cause harm to others”.

Cool. Now explain why a (self identified) man in a women's SSS doesn't cause harm to some women Mr Sobel.

I am pleasantly surprised that it's 25% of green party voters that agree with the supreme court judgment. I tend to be more of a tactical voter (vote for Khan and tend to vote labour or lib dem depending on who is more likely to win in my constituency) but am a member of the green party and dh always votes green. We also help canvass in seats where the greens have a chance (we live in a pretty conservative part of London though it has now gone to Labour as our area had the biggest increase in mortgages in the country!)

We both believe that a woman refers to a biological woman and also believe in single sex toilets, hospital wards etc but are happy to use whatever pronouns or accept people identifying as dolphins or iguanas if they wish.

I was deliberating leaving the party but it seems like it's a pretty decent percentage who think the way I do and dh and I have always been slight oddballs in the party anyway!

Shortshriftandlethal · 30/04/2025 09:24

It is not even about whether people like or dislike the decison...the decision was clear that legally a GRC or a 'gender identity' does not make a man a woman in law. There is nothing to agree or disagree about. That is just a fact. The ruling was clear and unanimous.

How can you 'disagree' with the decision unless you have studied the case and have expert legal knowledge yourself?

This is the same Alex Sobel to told us not to vote for him if we didn't subscribe to genderwoo.

I wish more politicians knew that having "MP" after your name doesn't make you a philosopher king. Politicians are hot dog salesmen. You may not like Nigel Farage, but he does know he's in the business of selling hot dogs.

Imagine that you're Salim's Hot Dogs, and you hire Alex Sobel MP to help you on weekend shifts.

Salim: Ok Alex, now you put the hot dog in the bun, the ketchup, mustard and fried onions are over there...

Sobel: THAT CUSTOMER LOOKS LIKE A TERF, I'M NOT SERVING HER

Kucinghitam · 30/04/2025 15:06

Yup. This was one of the rare instances when I was an obedient woman and accordingly did not vote for the bellend.

TheCourseOfTheRiverChanged · 30/04/2025 15:30

What are the LibDems doing?!
How can their manifesto be so at odds with their membership?
(Ok, I guess, entryism, and institutional capture, and selective blindness, &c.&c.&c. But surely things will have to shift?)

mumsandaunties · 30/04/2025 15:49

What I think is quite positive about these results is that they come despite the total lack of support from most Labour/Green/Liberal politicians, and the wall to wall media coverage of the sad face brigade.

So even with those parties and echo chambers a good number of people are hearing the bs and deciding that they will stick with their own opinion (and evidence of their eyes and ears) on the matter, thank you very much.

TwoeightTwoeightTwoOhhhh · 30/04/2025 15:58

i think this question is just too vague to really understand the picture.
A lot of people I know default to the be kind narrative but when you give specific examples change their minds, mostly because they’ve not actually given it enough thought to understand what this means in reality.
Asking a set of detailed scenarios like if a woman should be able to request a biological woman does her smear test, whether men identifying as women should be sent to women’s prisons etc would no doubt get different answers.
The contributors on this board clearly understand the real implications but I’m willing to bet most people answering that question don’t have a clear understanding of who was asking for the ruling and why, let alone what it actually means.

So based on that I think those numbers in support are surprisingly high!

IwantToRetire · 30/04/2025 18:01

Before posting I did try and see who had commissioned the survey, but all the article says is a "survey by pollsters Electoral Calculus and Find Out Now".

Find it had to think they just spontaneously did this!

Or maybe it is good publicity for their service. Hmm

I think I’d be a neither agree or disagree answer as I think the practicalities are a bit complicated

tobee · 30/04/2025 18:21

After the ruling was announced the msm and social media noise would make you think 99% of the electorate would be utterly against the ruling.

Just shows what happens if you ask people and they can respond anonymously (I assume).

I'm sure people will manage to suss it out. Seemed to work pretty well previously.

Not sure why but the link I posted doesn't seem to work. But is the correct link. Confused

Here it is again:

The lesbian groups one is just bloody callous.

rape crisis centres otoh - no one should be excluded from getting help that needs it, the issue is there need to be single sex services which are truly single sex.

moto748e · 30/04/2025 18:47

Well I think the figures for Labour voters are pathetically low, And disgraceful: less than half back exclusion from women's sports? And even fewer from toilets? WTAF?

The trouble with the Lib Dems is that they're still trading on a decades old reputation of being the sane, sensible centrists. I'd bet good money that most of their voters have no idea what their position is on stuff like this.

My family were long term Lib Dem voters and I know that my mum agrees with me on this issue and yet I don't think she believed me when I told her how batshit the Lib Dems now are.
