And, particularly egregious, as well as nothing to do with the purported topic:..."what does that mean in practice? Trans women on men’s wards, trans men on women’s wards?"...er, yes, that's right. And?

My mum died in A&E last month – and the place was like a war zone | Zoe Williams

Amid the debate about trans people on hospital wards we have lost sight of dignity, respect and the horrifying reality of a health service in meltdown, writes Zoe Williams

Zoe Williams's inability to understand this issue, despite numerous attempts to explain it to her, is really a testament to how far a private education can take you when you don't have two braincells to rub together.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 29/04/2025 17:25

Yes I thought this was low even for ZW. Using her own mothers death a month ago to shoehorn in her TRA agenda

and yes Zoe we would love to spend more time focusing on other issues in the NHS but we can’t because you and the men you support have spent so much time wrecking single sex provision, mangling language & lying about the equality act that we can’t. In fact I’m sure loads of the ppl in the NHS would like to spend time sorting out the problems but thanks to you & your TRA mates, they’ve had to give hours and hours and hours of time to incessant demands for changes in policy to benefit TW with veiled threats of what will happen if these are not made (I have friends who work in the NHS)

so yeah she can get in the sea

MrsOvertonsWindow · 29/04/2025 17:38

Just imagine how much time & money the NHS could have devoted to fixing all the inadequate maternity units for the benefit of mothers and babies? Imagine if they'd diverted all that staff time and resources spent on dehumanising them with distorted language, fake science and facts and literally millions of ££ spent on DEI staff & pointless meaningless initiatives. Rinse and repeat for countless other parts of the NHS.

Just imagine what a difference that could have made - if the NHS hadn't been captured by the fact / science denying trans cult.

Freda69 · 29/04/2025 18:11

Zoe Williams and Owen Jones are the pits. I might think about donating to the Guardian again if they were both sacked.

Arran2024 · 29/04/2025 19:55

She had good points to make about the state of the nhs but decided to couch it like this?! Maybe her boss told her to write about trans issues and this was her response.

I doubt her boss ever has to tell her to write about trans issues, TBH. She likes to go tilting at windmills about it whatever the seeming subject of her pieces.

Hermyknee · 30/04/2025 08:50

Zoe
You weren’t keen on leaving your son overnight.
Read WRN hospital report.
Now think about the problem with leaving a daughter.
It’s about mixed sex being a risk. You can see how dire the situation. Can’t you think about girls and women too?

DragonRunor · 30/04/2025 09:06

We know from bitter experience how extreme trans-rights eviscerates any organisation it colonises - Stonewall, no longer interested in LGB rights; the Green Party, no longer interested in environmental issues; the NHS, being re-focused away from health?

drwitch · 30/04/2025 09:22

my son was on a mixed sex ICU and then single sex rooms in common wards (the rooms were all off a common corridor with the female rooms at the back behind swing doors). I never really "got" the need for single sex accommodation before - I saw that it was important to some but there is nothing like experiencing even the small things to really drive it home. - There are big things too - a curtain is and feels just too thin.

WhatterySquash · 30/04/2025 09:31

Trans women on men’s wards, trans men on women’s wards? This delivers dignity and respect to precisely no one

Um Zoe you’re forgetting the vast majority of women and quite a lot of men who would like the dignity and privacy of a single sex ward and the women who would like to be able to sleep and recover without fearing being raped, as has actually already happened. That’s who it gives dignity and respect to. I.e. most people. And if trans men are on men’s wards they are also at a greatly increased risk, so them too.

Every single piece I’ve read by her has false assumptions, poor logic and non-sequiturs at its heart. I’ve been mind-boggled for her entire career at why she gets to be a columnist/commentator when she can’t string a thought process together. Drives me mad!

Itsonlytoday · 30/04/2025 11:46

@WhatterySquash says about safety, it's not only about rape which is quite rare but the risk has needlessly been introduced to more situations. It can be the indignity of having to be constantly guarding oneself from men wanting to catch a look at ones private parts. Having to be wary when a new nurse or doctor appears. It is so waring especially as one is not at ones best.

WhatterySquash · 30/04/2025 12:09

I'm still annoyed!

The relentless demonisation of trans people = the refusal to accept a lie about what sex someone is, sorry about that but no one's making anyone lie in the first place. And anyone else impersonating someone else's identity and claiming their rights would get short shrift wouldn't they? It is not "demonisation" to say "sorry but you haven't actually changed sex", it's just the truth. And in this case it happens to matter a lot, but even if it didn't, why shouldn't people understand the truth anyway? Forcing other peple to lie is not a reasonable "right" for anyone to have.

And her son was potentially at risk because he was next to someone with severe MH problems? Well yes that can happen to anyone in hospital. The NHS should do what they can to mitigate the risk for example give the mentally unwell person a single room if it's available. The answer is not to introduce more risk because some is unavoidable! You utter nincompoop!

And as for "You don't care who's next to you in A&E" yes Zoe, A&E is like Picadilly Circus, it's full of people and urgent situations, and chancer rapists who want access to woman via self-ID will not have a very good chance there. Just as I don't expect single-sex supermarkets or fairgrounds, although there always is a greater risk from men than from women, obviously in some situations single-sex would be unworkable and isn't generally necessary. So stop gaslighting everyone that what feminists want is some kind of total sex segregation, or that because some situations are a bit risky it's fine to add more risk of a type that vastly disadvantages women and not men. GAH!

I mean why doesn't she have an editor or sub who says "sorry Zoe this makes zero sense."

Igmum · 30/04/2025 12:32

Ah, if only we women had focused on the Really Important Things then the NHS would be sorted by now <shakes head sadly>

OldCrone · 30/04/2025 12:36

It's the Guardian. They're all as daft as she is.

WhereYouLeftIt · 30/04/2025 12:55

The article starts with :

"Another morning, another absolutely bananas conversation about transgender people, without any trans people involved"

Er, yeah. Just like all those conversations about women without any women involved.

Williams' writing is dreadful. I cannot read her pish any more.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 30/04/2025 14:06

Zoe is thick as mince. OJ on the other hand is malicious.

MarieDeGournay · 30/04/2025 14:50

I thought you couldn't beat shoe-horning transgenderism into celebrations of the 200th anniversary celebrations of the first [I know: kind-of first, for pedants out there]railway line between Stockton and Darlington - I actually had a little laugh to myself as I read the programme of events and exhibitions thinking 'Well at least they can't shoehorn genderwoo into the start of the railways!'.

They did. I can't remember the details, but one of the events or exhibitions mentioned transpeople. In 1825...🙄

But using your mother's death is despicable.

Didn't it occur to ZW that the people on the front line in the brutal 'war zones', the 'people doing their best in impossible circumstances'
are the very people who deserve dignity and respect - single sex changing areas for example.

Instead she saves all her sympathy for the tiny number of trans patients who may encounter 'discomfort' if they are put on wards designated for their biological sex.

A bit more sympathy for the wellbeing of the warriors in the war zones would be more appropriate.

dubaichocolate · 30/04/2025 15:15

I think ZW is one of those who thinks men and women have segregated sports because otherwise the women would beat the men… I think thinking in general is not her strong suit.

I know that is the reason but this has been going on the whole time she’s been writing which goes back way earlier than the genderwoo trend. I remember reading articles about various things ages ago and realising she actually doesn’t understand how logic and making a case for something works at all. It’s just “wibble wibble I’ve had this thought. And that thought. So <insert barely relevant progressive cause du jour> should happen.” 😡

As anyone who knows me can tell you I get really riled by nonsensical bullshit! Need a coffee and a Twirl to calm down…

As a Remainer, her columns really made me understand why some people voted Brexit.

She just couldn’t comprehend that her experience of life was not universal.

I've seen a video of her saying this about soccer. Unbelievable.

She also has a badly trained dog, and has no shame about it.

Thick as mince, indeed.

BundleBoogie · 30/04/2025 17:16

What an eye wateringly horrendous article in a crowded field.

“There was a woman in handcuffs, a man who vomited for 11 hours straight, people lying face down on the floor … I swear I glimpsed a man’s internal organ.”

Weaponising her mother’s death, dismissing the mental health impact on already extremely ill people of seeing a man in a wig on a ‘female’ ward, and the above description of actual people at the worst time in their lives.

How would that extremely ill man feel about Zoe prowling around with her reporters notepad gathering ‘anecdotes’ about his condition to bolster her crusade?

She clearly has no shame. All I can imagine is that grief has (hopefully temporarily) tipped the balance of her mind. What is not clear is what the sub editor was thinking unblushing this utter drivel.
