Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

So what question would you have asked on a Topical Comedy Show?

The story of the week was ignored by HIGNFY and trivialised by Radio 4’s News Quiz. So what could have been asked?

I’m thinking the odd one out round could have had pictures of the Pope in church, a bear in the woods, a woman and equal pay. Which one isn’t real?

They could have had fun with the best reverse ferret award, and played the missing words round with politician’s speeches.

But if the BBC can’t find any jokes, I’m sure FWR can.

Is the Last Leg still on? They have always been particularly poor on this as well. Will be interesting to see how they handle it. Adam Hills had to apologise earlier in this series for saying sex isn’t determined until an embryo is 6 weeks……

I stopped watching the Last Leg because of their attitudes around this subject.

They're willing to lift up any group of people, other than women.

NPET · 19/04/2025 16:20

What do you expect from the BBC? They'll pretend the ruling didn't happen.

I missed that 🤦‍♀️ What a Pratt.

As a general rule the panel of HIGNFY follow the rule of punching up not down.

Where in Lord Hodge's considered summation was there an invitation to satirise?

SameyMcNameChange · 19/04/2025 20:44

I think the fact that the Scottish Government spent probably millions on this, refusing to meet with women’s groups and seriously listen to their opinions and concerns, while funding organisations that ultimately gave them wrong advice is ripe for satire. And the backsliding of many politicians who are now saying they always agreed with this viewpoint when there are video clips to show they didn’t.

As for what question to ask, I would say ‘What blindingly obvious question should the Supreme Court be asked next week?’

misscockerspaniel · 25/04/2025 21:26

Hope you are watching this week's show!

CarefulN0w · 25/04/2025 21:27

I wonder if it is correct that they covered it and the BBC edited it out? Still felt they couldn’t move on quick enough.

Quite a bit better this week. Not amazing but OK.

I wondered that too? I got the impression Ian Hislop was pretty pissed off though. He named the person who cut it!

Violetparis · 25/04/2025 21:56

I would like to see the footage of what Ian Hislop said last week.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 25/04/2025 21:57

They still sound very defensive about it though.

Fenlandia · 25/04/2025 22:33

Gritted teeth and incomprehension all round. Go on BBC, let's hear what Hislop said!

bigknitblanket · 25/04/2025 23:16

Bit disappointed with Jo Brand’s comments about Kemi Badenoch - saying it was all she banged on about at PQT when there’s lots of other issues

FaintlyMacabre · 25/04/2025 23:27

The Skewer on R4 was refreshing for the BBC- had a good take on Stonewall I thought.

Harassedevictee · 25/04/2025 23:41

I thought Ian Hislop was joking about the segment that was cut. It was a way to cover it this week.

It did come over that even they feel it’s not a topic that can be discussed without a backlash.

misscockerspaniel · 26/04/2025 08:48

Interesting that both Ian Hislop and Jo Brand referred to death threats received by those who spoke out. Shame they did not say from where the death threats came. Or may be they did, and it was edited. Has Private Eye covered the SC ruling?

The current issue came out just before SC judgement so I’m assuming it will be covered in next issue.

I too would be interested to see what was cut out from last week’s HIGNFY episode!

CarefulN0w · 26/04/2025 09:59

Didn’t there used to be a longer version shown post 10pm a couple of days after the original broadcast? I wonder if the BBC be brave enough to show it.

As a slight aside - here's an article from 2018 with Jo Brand

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/oct/10/women-avoid-transgender-debate-fear-reaction-jo-brand-germaine-greer-feminism

Many women are wary of entering feminist debates over transgender issues because they are frightened of the reaction, the comedian and writer Jo Brand has said.

Brand was addressing a debate that has led to feminists such as Germaine Greer and Julie Bindel being “no-platformed” at some universities.

She said that reaction was “pathetic” and the two sides needed to see there was common ground. The big danger was that women avoided the debate.
“A lot of people feel very wary about talking about the topic,” Brand said. “A lot of women feel if they say anything at all there is a kind of knee-jerk reaction of anger which has nothing to do with the content of what they said … and because they feel frightened of being threatened. I mean, who wouldn’t be?”

I stopped watching the Last Leg because of their attitudes around this subject.

They're willing to lift up any group of people, other than women.

Adam Hill and the rest of the Last Leg lot just don't seem to like women very much.

The way they lamented what a tragedy it was for Oscar Pistorius while writing Reeva Steenkamp out her own story, the way they've spoken about JKR and just their smug incredulousness that anyone would think differently to them has made what was a vaguely amusing tv programme into a circle jerk of men sniffing their own farts.

Waitwhat23 · 26/04/2025 10:30

The footage of Joanna Cherry with her head in her hands while Kirsty Blackman, a mother of two, declared to the Scottish Parliament that she doesn't know what chromosomes she's got because she's never been tested is ripe for a section on a quiz show -

Along the lines of, 'what has Kirsty Blackman said here?'

A. Babies aren't born with a sex
B. I don't know what chromosomes I have, I've never been tested
C. Clownfish can change sex so....
D. The Scottish Government are a credible outfit

here's the 45min version of last Friday's show. I've just skimmed over it and couldn't see anything about the SC ruling. So it was edited out of both the short version and the longer version...

HIGNFY used to have JKR in the opening credits iirc - it’s been removed I think. She was in a tug or war with trans activists.
