Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

So what question would you have asked on a Topical Comedy Show?

The story of the week was ignored by HIGNFY and trivialised by Radio 4’s News Quiz. So what could have been asked?

I’m thinking the odd one out round could have had pictures of the Pope in church, a bear in the woods, a woman and equal pay. Which one isn’t real?

They could have had fun with the best reverse ferret award, and played the missing words round with politician’s speeches.

But if the BBC can’t find any jokes, I’m sure FWR can.

I’ve stopped watching Last Lefg too. I always thought Adam Hills would be an ally for women especially as he has daughters. Sadly not.

Harassedevictee · 26/04/2025 12:22

I honestly think Ian Hislop was joking about the previous show and nothing was cut.

They didn’t want to discuss it, they had a backlash and it was a slightly jokey way to apologise and bring the topic up.

RoastOrMash · 26/04/2025 12:31

I haven’t watched last night’s yet, only the extended episode from last week, but I believe him it probably was covered. I’ve been to see HIGNFY recorded several times and from memory the recording is about 1.5hour so even with extended version there is a lot of material left on cutting room floor.. Plus if he’s lying/joking it’s easily disproved by audience who watched it being recorded. I expect it was editorial decision to cut it, someone ideological or scared of backlash.
Am looking forward to next Private Eye, they’d better cover it big or my sub will be cancelled!

I agree. No one actually used the word trans and I thought Jo Brand was disappointing in that her only main comment was to have a dig at Kemi Badenoch instead of supporting Kemi's thoughts about Keir Starmer. Kemi was spot on and Jo's feminist stance seems to have vanished when she thinks her career might be at stake
Iain also talked about death threats but was too cowardly to say who had sent them to who. It's pretty obvious which group of people use death threats as a weapon, but it would have been good if he had said the word trans.
I'm not a Catholic but I thought it was distasteful to use the death of a major religious leader, an old man, as the butt of a lot of the HIGNFY jokes. I know it's a satirical news programme but why is it OK to make jokes about the Pope's funeral and possibly upset some Catholics but not make jokes about violent deluded men pretending to be women for perverted reasons. The Pope's funeral was used to create content and padding for the programme so that the presenters could say as little as possible about women's rights while giving the court ruling a cursory mention.
I'm pretty sure the Pope was pro trans - even he had pretended to accept it all, apologies if I am wrong.

No. Catholicism is clear that gender theory is not a good thing.

@SameyMcNameChange Thanks for your update, happy to be corrected.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 26/04/2025 20:01

There has been a number of BBC articles recently implying that the Pope was very positive towards LGBT individuals and that's what I was thinking about.

I thought Ian Hislop was joking about the segment that was cut. It was a way to cover it this week.

It did come over that even they feel it’s not a topic that can be discussed without a backlash.

I watched the extended edition of HIGNFY last night. Ian Hislop wasn't joking. He seemed pretty pissed off that his response to the SC ruling had been cut.

Thanks, I obviously misread his emotion’s.

Conxis · 27/04/2025 08:53

I also felt he seemed quite pissed off

Harassedevictee · 27/04/2025 09:15

I agree he was pissed off but I thought it was because he was made to talk about it. However, I am happy to accept they did cover it and it was cut.

It was the fact he said he talked about John Stuart Mills clash of rights. Not a name associated with either side that made me think they hadn’t really discussed it.

As I’ve said I’m happy to accept I misinterpreted the segment.

I disgree - I think Hislop had said something sensible but the BBC didn’t want to hear it. I think his views would have been very reasonable but definitely broadly in support of the ruling. I think he seemed genuinely angry that they’d not had the guts to broadcast it.

Quoting Mills would be typical of Hislop - and it would suggest he does understand the issue of clashing rights and that trans rights do affect women’s rights.

I think I’m bit behind here. Where did Ian Hislop say he was annoyed about his comments on the SC judgement being cut?

He didn’t actually say it but some of us picked it up in his tone

RoastOrMash · 27/04/2025 12:46

Isn’t HIGNFY made by Hat Trick who were also ones who wouldn’t do Father Ted musical unless Glinner stepped away? Maybe it was a Hat Trick editing decision rather than BBC?
Hopefully the cut might be covered in Private Eye…

This Friday’s episode - he sounded very annoyed about it.
