'Trans officers within British Transport Police can no longer conduct intimate searches of women following a Supreme Court ruling, GB News can reveal.
Guidance to staff seen by this broadcaster said that, as an interim position, any "same sex searches are to be undertaken in accordance with the biological sex of the detainee."

Deputy Chief Constable Alistair Sutherland told BTP officers that the force would provide "further clarity" once it "had a chance to digest the judgment" handed down at the Supreme Court yesterday, which ruled that trans women are not legally women.'

British Transport Police update strip search policy after landmark trans Supreme Court decision

Officers have been referred to the 'Wellbeing Hub' if affected by legal ruling

It's going to be interesting to see which organisations just roll over without even a whimper and which ones decide to go down fighting to their last breath.

Luckily the NHS will have to roll over.... Especially now they are joining NHS England as part of DHSC.

LizzieSiddal · 17/04/2025 19:59

R4 and Channel 4 news both lead with this story but it was framed with deep concern that “Trans women will be searched by males”
I shouted at the radio -well that’s because most of them have a cock and balls!

There was obviously no mention what’s so ever about the fact that women will now not have to worry about being intimately searched by males.Angry

Good. Of all the organisations that grouped men-who-say-they're-women in with women, the NHS was the most ridiculous. How can sex possibly be trumped by gender in healthcare?

ScoldsBridle · 17/04/2025 20:03

I am currently on a Facebook discussion where someone, obviously new to all this, is sympathising with poor India Willoughby - who has just posted about the travesty of British transport Police allowing men to strip search Trans women. Sigh. I’ve put my head above the parapet on Facebook for the 1st time and I can’t be countering every bloody piece of nonsense or else I’ll never be off Facebook.

Who has invested the most money in this and who is exposed to the highest levels of liability...

...do you think there might turn out to be a link?

Class action lawsuit against BTP incoming.

I hope so. Both for the women who have suffered but also because there will still be some who try to get round things. Money talks in a way decency doesn't.

Or that female officers would have been forced to search males.

Twisted on channel 4 news to be dreadful that TW would now have to be searched by men…nothing about what happens to women. Actually this seems to be the general approach of media outlets… all about the female impersonators and how sad they are. Furious all over again,

Scout2016 · 17/04/2025 20:39

I have been wondering if there will be a drop in the number of men who wish us to pretend they are women after this ruling is put into action. I suspect we will see fewer men facing criminal sentences suddenly coming out as TW at the least.

Sadly I fear the number of young women wanting to pretend they are not women will not significantly drop, but I hope I am prove wrong.

WarriorN · 17/04/2025 20:40

It’s concerning to see how many places have been flouting the law.

This has been the law for a long time!

borntobequiet · 17/04/2025 20:44

I have complained again to the BBC, and I will continue to do so every time I hear them centring men in this when they should centre women.

Mt563 · 17/04/2025 20:53

Although, of course a transman could check a women, but that would be fine and obvious they were a woman so no issues there.

Signalbox · 17/04/2025 20:53

Ooh an interim policy. They are going to have to come out with a definitive policy PDQ if the judicial review is only on hold for 14 days following the SC decision. Should be a fairly easy adjustment to their current policy.

LittleGreenDuck · 17/04/2025 21:00

I work for the NHS. We've had a Trust wide email today acknowledging that many people will be shocked and upset by the ruling. An assurance that the Trust will continue to respect everyone's identity and offering support as we "navigate this journey together".

Banging my head against the desk. Very tempted to point out that some of us are overjoyed and relieved by the ruling, but I've not been in this post long and need to keep my job for now.

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/04/2025 21:00

Life gets so much easier and straightforward following yesterday's ruling.

I love it.Grin

CervixSampler · 17/04/2025 21:02

The response from a few organisations has been swift and although it should have never been necessary to make this ruling because, well, common sense, it really is heartening to read that things are changing and I can finally say what I believe.

CervixSampler · 17/04/2025 21:03

But oh yes, the poor men 🙄🤬

loveyouradvice · 17/04/2025 13:44

Thanks for posting this @ArabellaScott

I'm impressed they have acted so fast and clearly - I hope others will follow suit.

Though I did find myself asking how often Transport Police are strip searching people?!?!?!?

Agree, It’s great things are happening so quickly.

I think a lot or organisations knew what was happening was wrong but their hands were tied, with the new law it means they can implement change without fear of having a potential fight on their hands

That loud plop sound you hear is the sound of thousands of HR and legal departments shitting their pants.

TheOtherRaven · 17/04/2025 21:12

Argh, too right, the BBC are not apparently able to acknowledge the existence of half the human race.

The MAIN ISSUE is that men may be upset at being searched by other men.

Not that until yesterday women knew that men were being told they had a right to strip search a woman in their identity regardless of the woman's perceptions, experience and consent with the woman under threat of accusations of 'hate' for voicing distress

Not that women have been forced to search men - who have harassed them and visibly enjoyed it

What could possibly be the motive to hide that part entirely and frame it only as poor men possibly experiencing something women have been required to suck up for years under legal threats if they said something evil like 'I'm not ok with this'?

TheOtherRaven · 17/04/2025 21:17

Mt563 · 17/04/2025 20:53

Although, of course a transman could check a women, but that would be fine and obvious they were a woman so no issues there.

The obvious, sensible thing to do would be to exempt trans officers from such duties and not cause issues for anyone.

RoundAndRoundTheTable · 17/04/2025 21:22

I have a feeling that the ones rolling over are the ones saying “thank fuck” - whether the individuals personally think that or not. Suddenly there is clarity! My partner is NHS management, and is hopeful that while there’ll still be people kicking off, this means they are able to have clear policies without fear of legal action from any direction.

I work for a totally captured organisation (which has featured heavily on these pages). No word yet on whether our policies will change.

We had a similar email sent round the NHS organisation I work for, by a director with pronouns in her signature. I'm intrigued to see how the ruling will play out and how some of the very senior managers address this.
