Women's rights general conversations - Thread 10

Continuation of Thread 9.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

I can't find a suitable thread to share this on, so I'm putting it here in the hope that it will get shared somewhere better. This is an article about a Dutch father who developed an interesting approach to the diagnosis process when his son claimed he was transgender - might be a good tactic for some other parents:

https://substack.com/inbox/post/162538260?utm_source=multiple-personal-recommendations-email&utm_medium=email&triedRedirect=true

That was a very interesting read and what a surprise* that the Righteous "physicians" lied to the family and the insurance company.

*Not a surprise

Impressively thorough work by that father. If only clinicians were as diligent.

Re Chinese, I believe it was similar in Korea. There was near universal literacy long before most countries got anywhere close, because of the development of a deliberately simple alphabet (the king who ordered its development specified that a peasant should be able to learn to read it in a day). But Chinese writing was the preserve of the educated elite - used for all court and civil service records as well as prestigious books - and rarely learnt by women of any class.

Is it just me or does Suzanne Vega sound a bit sex realist at the end of this interview?

https://archive.ph/n5bfB

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/music/interviews/suzanne-vega-interview/

I'm clearly desperate for any celebrity not to publicly declare themselves to be and ally themselves with idiots 😢

It'd be interesting to see what happens if the tras get a sniff of it. I think kicking off about remarks so reasonable would be a bit of a self own. Also it wouldn't be the first time someone apparently sane turns off their brain when it comes to gender woo.

In his recent series on Radio 4 David Sedaris pokes a teeny bit of fun at pronouns and says he's gay not queer. I felt very relieved. (He is also very funny. I love him)

I'm always surprised when any public figure comes out as not TRSOH.

Which surely shows what a long way there is to go.We always hope the artists we admire feel the same; I still play Solitude Standing all the time, fabulous record.

FlowerUser · 03/05/2025 12:14

My favourite is The Queen and the Soldier and Caramel.

My youngest uncle introduced me to that album when I was a teenager, he's only 14 years older than me and seemed so cool compared to all my older aunts and uncles. I still love that album and she has a wonderful smoky silky sort of voice.

Loved her music. I heard her singing live at Glastonbury but from about five miles away in Shepton Mallet and even at that distance it was really good.

FlowerUser · 03/05/2025 13:45

I saw her live in London a few years ago when she played the whole of the Solitude Standing album. Brilliant.

Just love The Queen and the Soldier, brilliant song.

Britinme · 03/05/2025 14:32

I saw her in Portland quite a few years ago. She played in a church so it was a bit smaller than the usual concert venue. She was fantastic.

This article is interesting. About the shamans, drug use, etc. middle and South America, the research and how that influences what's being studied creating its own myths which get concreted by people too willing to see what they want to see.

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2025/may/01/the-ancient-psychedelics-myth-people-tell-tourists-the-stories-they-think-are-interesting-for-them

Got me thinking about two spirit (a fairly well known recent 'ancient' phenomenon) used to legitimise gender ideology. I wonder if this is even more widespread. Although I'll probably have to content myself with wondering. I can't imagine anyone having the guts to objectively study whether they have always been there.

The ancient psychedelics myth: ‘People tell tourists the stories they think are interesting for them’

The narrative of ancient tribes around the world regularly using ayahuasca and magic mushrooms in healing practices is a popular one. Is it true?

Another Suzanne Vega fan here, Mum used to play both albums (along with Graceland, Jackson Brown and Sting (!)) when we cleaned the Pub we lived in the mid-eighties. It takes me straight back there instantly - I associate Marlene on the Wall with the smell of stale beer, cigarettes, woodsmoke and polish!

moto748e · 04/05/2025 11:06

And quite right too!

SqueakyDinosaur · 04/05/2025 11:27

UB40's Ivory Madonna for me, but yes, takes me straight back to the Bakers Arms in Winchester...

Mmmnotsure · 04/05/2025 16:01

I was sent this from Holland. Today the flags are at half mast in the Netherlands to commemorate the victims of World War II. Tomorrow full mast to celebrate liberation.

Apart from the obvious, I was trying to work out why I found this so moving. It’s because flags are powerful. We have had years of seeing flags all over the place that celebrate a movement which excludes and threatens women. I still remember my visceral reaction on turning into Regent Street a couple of years ago when there were wall-to-wall progress pride flags all the way down.

Hopefully things are changing. But in the meantime, happy Liberation Day on the 5th.

Mmmnotsure · 04/05/2025 18:42

Do they let us have pictures now?

CriticalCondition · 04/05/2025 20:28

RMW currently on BBC Antiques Roadshow VE Day special. I wasn't really watching but recognised his voice immediately. And there he was on screen talking enthusiastically to the military expert about his grandfather's service pistol.

Is that a euphemism?

Is that a euphemism?

It has a spectrum of meanings. Pick whatever works for you. Grin

The Telegraph on the Green Party a bit of history and where they are now, including a brief mention of Challenor. If someone want to find a suitable thread to repost? Apologies for the post and run.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 05/05/2025 15:39

Interesting article, but I think they've got a bit mixed up in the middle and forgotten the difference between gender critical and gender ideologist.

Yeah, I noticed that. They should have done a bit more on the Challenor's too.
