The original thread has been deleted for “breaking Mumsnet guidelines”. Not sure why but possibly “misgendering” or possibly making it too easy to find the crowdfund @mumsnet it would be good if you could let us know so this thread can stay up. Do we have to pretend that the Claimant is female?

Finished for the day. Back at 10am.

Await incoming monitors...

I'd never heard of Fargo ratings before, but they seem to be mostly about 9-ball (American) pool. Found the page, and got HH's rating, but searching for other female 8-ball players (and, indeed, male ones) doesn't show much. One or two are listed, with low "robustness" ratings. I surmise that to mean that they are 8-ball players who have played the odd game of 9-ball, so their ranking is based on only a few results.

He’s speaking with clarity. Using language to more easily communicate, not couch it in dense scientific jargon. PF’s communication was so unclear. It really seemed to be a use of very scientific language to obfuscate.

The height thing was interesting. Dr Dave’s 6’2, so doesn’t regard 5’11 as tall.

I suppose I’d better clarify (sic!) that I have no idea whatsoever whether or not it was the intention of the good PF to obfuscate, but that is what that dense scientific jargon does to a non scientist.

The concepts can be difficult to grasp, and I think Dr Dave did a masterclass in speaking plainly. And indeed, he was easily able to pick out and elucidate on the pertinent points in the good PF’s simulation.

RMW flailing with Van Boening's name again but couldn't remember the initials. After a helpful reminder RMW snarked 'I promise to take more interest in pool in future'.

Funny RMW was snarky about it, given they expect everyone to take a great deal of interest in their idiosyncratic sense of identity, and seek to control the language we use about themself, such that we have to deny the evidence of our own eyes and ears.

Can anyone tell me the best way to query a deletion? Tx.

CriticalCondition · 10/04/2025 19:12

At the beginning of cross-examination RMW asked Dr Alciatore how to pronounce his name. Dr A explained very clearly and politely and with good humour. Over the next couple of hours RMW then proceeded to mispronounce it using pretty much every possible variation except the right one.
Dr A was far too lovely to say anything.

@Mmmnotsure did you get a deletion message? It usually says what the deletion was for

Well that didn't take long. Hmm

I'm not sure about the best way but others will know. I think there was some discussion at the beginning of the thread.

I am betting myself a large G&T it will be the pronouns you used. It's always the pronouns.

Chrysanthemum5 · 10/04/2025 19:33

And @CriticalCondition is correct, it will be pronouns and they probably won't reinstate your post in that case. For some reason the pronouns of certain individuals are more important than other considerations

Bannedontherun · 10/04/2025 19:37

Well just caught up and read sub stack. Dave nailed it really IMO

You could report your own post and just ask. Doesn’t need to be the post in question. Then they will email you with an explanation.

@CriticalCondition
I don't think it would be pronouns, but would like to know what it is.

I don't usually have problems on Mnet and am surprised at this.

Mmmnotsure · 10/04/2025 19:42

This is a post hopefully for MNHQ

murasaki · 10/04/2025 19:43

It will be, I was locked out of my account this evening for it. I've re read the policy and will be more circumspect in future.

Could you link to it, please? I've trawled back through quite a few pages, but can't find it.

Thanks.

There were two sessions this pm. The first two links go to that. Don't know what that weird third link is doing.

Not just non-scientists. It can encompass other subject-matter experts in a different discipline and with whom you need to collaborate. Anyone outside your specific idiolect.

Specialized terminology reduces the number of citations of scientific papers

Words are the building blocks of communicating science. As our understanding of the world progresses, scientific disciplines naturally enrich their specialized vocabulary (jargon). However, in the era of interdisciplinarity, the use of jargon may hinder effective communication among scientists that do not share a common scientific background. The question of how jargon limits the transmission of scientific knowledge has long been debated but rarely addressed quantitatively. We explored the relationship between the use of jargon and citations, using 21 486 articles focusing on cave research, a multidisciplinary field particularly prone to terminological specialization, and where linguistic disagreement among peers is frequent. We demonstrate a significant negative relationship between the proportion of jargon words in the title and abstract and the number of citations a paper receives. Given that these elements are the hook to readers, we urge scientists to restrict jargon to sections of the paper where its use is unavoidable.

It will probably be for not lying. Some tinpot despot will be apoplectic about the truth being uttered, I suspect.

I may be wrong. Maybe you called a man a woman. And the man is so upright and truthful that he cannot let a lie stand.

Bannedontherun · 10/04/2025 20:22

Dave said the physicist simulation was ridiculous because the break speed was 80mph, which is humanly impossible. I know as a player at much lesser speeds, where the ram is too hard and the cue is slightly bottom on the white then the ball will fly off the table and cause considerable chaos in a pub.

There's a couple of references to 'Blackpool' by RMW - is this an error by RMW, an error in the transcription, or a correct conflation of 'Blackball Pool'?

lcakethereforeIam · 10/04/2025 20:37

I was just going to ask about 'Blackpool'! It's the sort of mis-spoke mistake I would make.

moto748e · 10/04/2025 20:40

It's certainly not a conflation. That is not a thing.

I don’t see why a post would be deleted for using correct pronouns based on biological sex. Posts up thread have set out the whole Forstater/Grainger test/WORIADS/GC views protected under EA2010 thing so posts shouldn’t be deleted on this basis.
