“No code words”. How ironic.

mustytrusty · 19/03/2025 22:39

No toilets either, usually. So it's a bit of a non-event really.

BiologicalRobot · 19/03/2025 22:49

Aldis have toilets? Or do they mean staff toilets - which are probably single cubicle/unisex?

Helpagirlout222 · 19/03/2025 22:59

The Aldi near me has lovely toilets now,I did notice it had a female door sign and was well stocked with period products

Yes they have toilets.

I wonder, do they have the period products in both toilets, or just the ones specifically for ‘people who have periods’. If so, I wonder which toilet that would be….

SlipperyLizard · 19/03/2025 23:04

I’ve never seen a toilet in an Aldi!

JazzyJelly · 19/03/2025 23:05

I donate pads every time I shop at Aldi. Didn't know they had toilets but jolly good.

RandySavage · 19/03/2025 23:07

"well stocked with period products"

Probably Dylan Mulvaney popping in to stock them up from the supply he carries around with him.

AprilF00L · 19/03/2025 23:08

"people". Fuck them.

howdoyoudooooo · 19/03/2025 23:11

I know I’m on the feminist board of MN but still… I can’t get worked up about this particular wording. “The people who need them” sounds like natural phrasing, it doesn’t sound awkward like “people who menstruate” and all that bollocks. Yes they could have said “the women and girls who need them”, maybe it was as simple as wanting a shorter phrase rather than trying to be inclusive of… other people.

accountdetailschangeusername · 19/03/2025 23:11

Doesn’t “people” just work quite well here to include all ages? Women is too old sounding for the 11-18 years olds. “For the Females that need them” would sound odd. It doesn’t strike me as wording we would have baulked at 10 years ago.

And our Aldi has always had toilets for both sexes separately and recently they have added period products. Good on them.

It's just the bigger picture of the erasure of women. If it was this instance alone it wouldn't really be a big deal, but with the wider context of everything going on it needs to be spoken about.

It is yet another giant company normalising the idea that the word "woman" or "female" doesn't need to be spoken. (unless when validating certain groups)

Also the fact that women have biological needs different to those of men doesn't need to be acknowledged if they use this language.

Igmum · 20/03/2025 07:41

People who menstruate 🤦‍♀️. Yup Aldi, you said it 🙄

MotherEarthisaTerf · 20/03/2025 08:47

Due to the size of the image , not all of the text/context is seen unless you click it to view in full.

sorry, here’s the top to highlight what’s annoyed me.

its the whole “We said it!”

We’re not ashamed of the word period, we just don’t like the word woman.

Aldi, they said it.

Oh no! Has someone reported me? It says my images are under review when I went to post that.

Lucky for me I can easily pull text out of an image - hang on

Aldi
Yep, we said it. When 41% of people who menstruate are unable to afford period products, someone has to.
That's why, from today, we're providing access to free pads and tampons in Aldi toilets*. No code words.
Just making sure period products are available to the people who need them.

It does say people who menstruate in the full image.

oh, and to someone else - some Aldis have customer toilets, not all.

Aldi have toilets in one of my local stores it’s a newish one. Maybe 3/4 years old. Just one cubicle each ladies , gents , disabled and a baby change. Kudos to them it’s regularly cleaned. Not in the other two Aldis I go to which are olde shops.

referring to women and girls by our bodily functions is dehumanising

Mn review all images now after the CA images debacle.

I saw this yesterday and it’s annoyed me so I won’t be shopping there going forward 😡
(our local Aldi has customer loos).

Lovelysummerdays · 20/03/2025 08:57

I quite like the campaign. I’m in Scotland and all public building including schools have a help yourself to period products going on. Don’t need to ask just take what you need for now/ later. It does help women and girls, strongly suspect you won’t find period products in the gents.

I didn’t see the full image. It was pure coincidence that I quoted “people who menstruate” as an example of repugnant language around all this. Yes, Aldi are guilty as charged.
