Bill to ban trans athletes from women’s sports blocked in US Senate

Legislation to prevent transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports failed to advance in the Senate on Monday after all Democrats voted against it.

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act failed to clear an initial procedural hurdle on a 51-45 vote. It needed 60 votes to advance, which would have required at least seven Democrats to vote with all Republicans to move it. The bill cleared the House in January on an almost entirely party-line vote.

The measure, sponsored by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), sought to amend Title IX, the federal civil rights law against sex discrimination, to prohibit schools from allowing transgender students to compete in athletic events “designated for women or girls.” It defines sex as “based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”

It would have effectively codified into law a Feb. 5 executive order signed by President Trump to ban transgender student-athletes from participating on girls’ and women’s sports teams. ...

Yes it seems so. Newsome is making a play to become the next candidate for President for the Dems and has seen the polls.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a pioneer for LGBTQ+ rights who decades ago upset leaders in his own party when he defied state law and issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples, suggested Democrats were in the wrong in allowing transgender athletes to participate in female college and youth sports.
“I think it’s an issue of fairness, I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness — it’s deeply unfair,” Newsom said in his debut podcast episode of “This is Gavin Newsom.” “I am not wrestling with the fairness issue. I totally agree with you.”...

Newsom’s interview with Kirk was friendly, sometimes exceedingly so. He mentioned the influence Kirk and other MAGA-world figures have had on his 13-year-old son, distanced himself from the use of pronouns and the gender-neutral term “Latinx,” called police defunding “lunacy,” denounced “cancel culture” and agreed that there had been some internal issues in the leadership of the Black Lives Matter organization.

Newsome of course put rapists in women's jails in California so he has a lot to atone for. However his reverse ferret has big implications as he is one of the biggest figures in Dem politics. It means that the internal debate is developing inside the Dems and it will shape the next Presidential bid. Newsome is facing backlash already.

Can't imagine Newsom will go down well at all...isn't he the ultimate virtue signalling 'progressive' - who has vowed to block every measure Trump attempts to introduce?

I've just finished listening to the episode. Interesting although I'm not sure what I make of what Newsom is trying to do.

It could be a massive reverse ferret, or wanting to get some airtime with the Trump fans , or ... ANOther option. He's literally just been told by a MAGA activist that he needs to go to war on his own party and kind of agreed. Very strange.

It just occurred to me that the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Bill was drafted to not only catch Lia Thomas types but would seem also to catch Caster Semenya and Imane Khelif types. However, it has a limited jurisdiction: a recipient of Federal financial assistance who operates, sponsors, or facilitates athletic programs or activitie and so won't be applicable to the 2028 Olympics.

But you can see where things seem to be heading, at least for the moment.

The Dems one job during this Trump term was to show that they can walk back the worst of their batshittery and be in better shape for 2028.

Apparently they've not got that memo.

100%
this was SUCH an easy win for them to show they are going high when republicans go low, but no….

it’s embarrassing.
they are just hell bent on keeping themselves as unelectable as possible….

Trump has said they won't give visas to trans athletes if nations try to send them tovthe Olympics.

Which arguably won't apply to Imane Khelif types.
