Bill to ban trans athletes from women’s sports blocked in US Senate

Legislation to prevent transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports failed to advance in the Senate on Monday after all Democrats voted against it.

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act failed to clear an initial procedural hurdle on a 51-45 vote. It needed 60 votes to advance, which would have required at least seven Democrats to vote with all Republicans to move it. The bill cleared the House in January on an almost entirely party-line vote.

The measure, sponsored by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), sought to amend Title IX, the federal civil rights law against sex discrimination, to prohibit schools from allowing transgender students to compete in athletic events “designated for women or girls.” It defines sex as “based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”

It would have effectively codified into law a Feb. 5 executive order signed by President Trump to ban transgender student-athletes from participating on girls’ and women’s sports teams. ...

You'd think some of the Democrats voting against would either be women who have participated in competitive sport or have wives/ sisters/ daughters / female friends who have but, apparently not.

IwantToRetire · 04/03/2025 20:48

I would suspect that the Demcrats not voting in support has nothing to do with the issue.

It is a political position of not supporting Trump!

Although from their time in power we know they wouldn't support it anyway.

This will get the voters flocking back to the Democrats. Idiots. They're setting up to lose in 28.

They are the epitome of “keep doing the same thing, keep getting the same outcome”.

Does this bill only address the single question of trans athletes? Republicans have a habit of wrapping anti-democracy measures in trans legislation. See the “bathroom bills” introduced in various states that were in part designed to reduce the power of (Democrat) cities and instead give control to (Republican) state government. They weren’t just about toilets. It would be foolish to vote for any legislation without doing a thorough threat analysis on it. Dems are by and large idiots when it comes to gender, but they may have other reasons not to vote for this that have nothing to do with gender ideology.

It's not just Republicans that smuggle in things in otherwise popular or sensible legislation - but I think in this case the entire amendment is as quoted upthread. The word "transgender" does not even appear. It's about protecting the female sports category from incursion by males.

I certainly haven't seen any argument against it raised other than the usual "genocide" or "TW are banned" hyperbolic claims.

LintelsAreStructural · 05/03/2025 05:46

Yes, I should have said “does it only address the issue of male athletes in women’s sport”. I recognise that Democrats are on the wrong side of the core question. Most people do not want male athletes in women’s sport.

And maybe the third reason is that they hate Trump more than they support women and girls?

This.

It's entrenchment.

The goal is to beat Trump and women and girls being damned.

NotBadConsidering · 05/03/2025 07:45

The sanctimonious Left is always going on about how the Right fires up the “Culture Wars”. I can’t see anything more definitive of playing Culture Wars than being so determined to disagree with Trump and Republicans you’re willing to let men smash volleyballs into the faces of women.

SionnachRuadh · 05/03/2025 07:52

Someone once said that Trump's superpower was his ability to make his enemies reveal themselves as being as corrupt as he says they are.

Senate Democrats don't care about men smashing volleyballs in girls' faces. At least, they don't care enough to defy the most unhinged parts of their coalition. So they oppose measures supported by a supermajority of their own voters.

I never thought I'd be nostalgic for Bill Clinton, but his opportunism would be a handy thing to have right now.

That doesn't look like a Trojan horse. It does allow males to participate in training if that doesn't cost a female a place. It doesn't seem to mention things like e.g. a woman's team taking on a team of adolescent boys when it's not part of a competition, nor prohibit e.g. tennis mixed doubles etc. What's wrong with the Democrats? Do they dislike women even more than the Republicans?

IwantToRetire · 05/03/2025 17:01

I think maybe some are missing the point.

The EO still exists.

This vote had it passed would have made it into a law. That's why I asked yesterday whether in fact an EO really only impacts those getting Government funding.

And let's face it, this is the country that still hasn't passed the Equal Rights Ammendment.

And for many people on either side, they dont actually care about the issue (ie men in women's sport) it is all about the political tribal war.

If any one saw clips of Trumps speech yesterday, the Democrats just sitting there not reacting in any way, will only make all those who think they are an elite and sore losers, confirmed in their opinion.

I think only Bernie Saunders walked about, and Al Green got ejected (not on this issue) but on the slash and burn approach of Trump's cuts.

Recently I've been watching a lot of 'Reactions to Music' videos on You Tube, in which people, most often young black men listen to music tracks for the first time ( usually music that in not MOBO - such as Led Zepplein, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits and so on). One of my favourite of these listening groups calls themselves 'The Cartier Family' - a group of young, black men from what I imagine to be New York or maybe Chicago or Atlanta, or similar.

Anyway, I just noticed today a 'reaction' from them to Trump's 'State of the Nation' speech yesterday - the part in which he is listing the sorts of schemes that U.S dollars are being spent on; but also on the issue of Males in Female sports....I was expecting a very negative reaction from them towards Trump...but rather they were very scathing about the behaviour of the Democrats ( including their blocking of the bill to get males out of women's categories) in the chamber.

It is worth a watch ( about 20 minutes long) Very interesting! To note who actually does support some of the things Trump is trying to do.

Sometimes I think, if the blue fringes in the universities ever manage to destroy the Western canon, it will live on in Black Guy Reacts videos.

Trump has had a cult following among young black men for a long time, since before politics. There's a whole genre on TikTok of young black men acclaiming Trump as a gangsta rapper. The loud and brash persona, the bling, the association with pro wrestling click with them in a way they don't click with affluent educated white liberals.

Entertainment value aside, that's a working class constituency with material wants. Many of them are pretty cynical about black community leaders, and I doubt they'll be in the market for policies designed to appeal to the luxury belief class.

The young men in the video above are anyting but 'gangsta' rappers ( I think they all met while playing sport)....... and are, in fact, very nice, thoughtful young men....who happen to believe in common sense and don't buy into the endless structural oppression narratives that get peddled by the progressive left.

A very interesting watch, anyway.

Ooh is Gavin Newsom (Governor of California) about to break ranks?

Gavin Newsom, a pioneer for LGBTQ+ rights who decades ago upset leaders in his own party when he defied state law and issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples, suggested Democrats were in the wrong in allowing transgender athletes to participate in female college and youth sports.'

That wasn't the final vote. The Republicans were trying to get the legislation approved without filibuster, but it didn't work and the Democrats are filibustering it. It will eventually become law, but now it will have to take the long route through the Senate, not the expedited one.

Yes it seems so. Newsome is making a play to become the next candidate for President for the Dems and has seen the polls.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a pioneer for LGBTQ+ rights who decades ago upset leaders in his own party when he defied state law and issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples, suggested Democrats were in the wrong in allowing transgender athletes to participate in female college and youth sports.
“I think it’s an issue of fairness, I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness — it’s deeply unfair,” Newsom said in his debut podcast episode of “This is Gavin Newsom.” “I am not wrestling with the fairness issue. I totally agree with you.”...

Newsom’s interview with Kirk was friendly, sometimes exceedingly so. He mentioned the influence Kirk and other MAGA-world figures have had on his 13-year-old son, distanced himself from the use of pronouns and the gender-neutral term “Latinx,” called police defunding “lunacy,” denounced “cancel culture” and agreed that there had been some internal issues in the leadership of the Black Lives Matter organization.

Newsome of course put rapists in women's jails in California so he has a lot to atone for. However his reverse ferret has big implications as he is one of the biggest figures in Dem politics. It means that the internal debate is developing inside the Dems and it will shape the next Presidential bid. Newsome is facing backlash already.

He's a mendacious shit, but he may have made a crack for more people who dared not observe publicly that the Emperor is, in fact, a nudist.

4 Nothing in this subsection shall be construed to prohibit a recipient from permitting males to train or practice with an athletic program or activity that is designated for women or girls...

This is puzzling. So forget 'no males in female sports' as a matter of principle, now males ARE allowed in female sports
...so long as no female is deprived of a roster spot on a team or sport, opportunity to participate in a practice or competition, scholarship, admission to an educational institution, or any other benefit that accompanies participating in the athletic program or activity.

How is that going to be adjudicated, and policed? How is it possible to even know whether or not a girl has been discouraged from participating in the sporting activity because of the presence of males, trans or not? What about the fact that the greater physical strength of males is dangerous in many sports - not just obvious contact ones like boxing but volleyball, soccer/football etc.

It looks like article 4 takes away from all women and girls the right to single sex sports as a right and as a matter of principle. Instead, they are going to have to prove - somehow - that they should be on the team instead, that they are missing out on valuable practice time, that they are not going to reach the level needed to win a scholarship..

How do you go about doing that? Why should you be forced to do that? Won't any girl who attempts to assert her rights be told to #bekind, don't be horrible - or possibly 'don't be a bigot' - to this lovely guy who just wants to play on the girls' team..

It seems to me that it completely undermines the other 3 articles, or am I misreading it somehow - I'm operating on only one cuppa so far this morning so maybe I'm wrongSmile

Edited

§4 doesn't allow boys to play on the girls' team. They can train with the girls, but they cannot compete on the girls team. This allows for mixed sex technique sessions, such as kata drills.

I love those videos of people listening to something brand-new to them and not their usual genre for the first time. Watching someone else step outside their musical comfort zone is like seeing my own reaction to when I went to a jazz session for the first time ever.
