https://www.theguardian.com/news/2025/feb/27/andrew-tate-tristan-romania-us?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other. It seems that Trump successfully pressured the Romanian authorities into allowing this.

What other US citizen prisoners abroad has the Whitehouse had returned to America since Trump became POTUS for a 2nd time?

How many have been brought back to the USA in the past 7 weeks?

The question is whether it is normal for the US government to negotiate for American citizens in circumstances like these.

Who else or how many since Trump's administration had done this for in the last month is totally immaterial.

If it's normal - and it is normal in other countries - than that's the backdrop for Tate's situation.

What anyone thinks of him personally isn't relevant, nations still have obligations to their citizens abroad. That's why, if you are unlucky or stupid enough to get in trouble with the law while abroad, one of the first things you are supposed to do is contact your nation's consulate.

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/02/2025 14:23

I'm trying to ascertain if it is normal. If it is there will be a history of it happening to others, not just the Tate rapists.

The US Basketball player and the Russians which was a prisoner trade swap.

As I understand there were other US citizens in Russian jails who could have been tradable.

The Tates are still "expected" to go back and face the justice system.

Really, because that is what I asked, which you were snarky and condescending about.

If you wanted to know if it was normal, then you should have asked if it was normal; whether or not Trump has done it in the past weeks is not very revealing given the short timeline. But ia negative answer would allow you to make out like it was an aberration rather than something that governments do regularly.

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/02/2025 19:23

Looks like it was the Tate rapists' connections to Trump that made this happen rather than it being a normal thing.

It's useful in that it lays out the links and pathways of influence persuuasively in some detail, so goes beyond the headline denials by Trump himself and his envoy Richard Grennell that they engineered this.

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/02/2025 23:25

Thanks @AlexaAdventuress.Thanks

It certainly was an eye opening read for me.

TempestTost · 01/03/2025 01:32

So according to this article there are definitely some people involved in the Trump administration who seem to like Tate's public persona and have said they are supportive of him. There are some claims from Tate himself about closer links, but they remain unsubstantiated - I would be inclined to refrain from assuming anything he says is true especially with name-dropping. The government denied directly interfering but it's also difficult to say to what degree that is true.

I'll be interested to see what happens with Florida - it seems very possible given the international nature of his alleged criminal activities that they'll find themselves charged elsewhere too.

Thank you for that.

It is saying exactly what the tabloids had said but in a posher way.
The setup of the private jet flying into the airport neat Tump property is wink wink nudge nudge, and if the link was so strong why there rather than to the US Capital.

I would be intrested in Floridas traffic laws being a landing point for Cuba and having international shipping trade route ports.

Trump was charged in the State so it would be unlikely that that was not factored onto the flight plan. If I were planning to or not going to turn up for trial i would want to know the impact of an international arrest warrent as I would be expecting to be jailed (as a proven flight risk + passports*2) while the US court decided if I be extradited.

AlexaAdventuress · 01/03/2025 08:09

What I'm still puzzled about is how the Romanian authorities managed to drag the process out so long. Even the UK's sclerotic Crown Prosecution Service could have got its ducks in a row by this time. The longer they leave it the less the likelihood of a guitly verdict - witnesses drop out or change their stories, Tate's defence counsel challenge them over their memory of events, and other means of muddying the waters. What I'd appreciate is an article laying out the story of this case - the exact allegations, the various arraignments, reasons for delays. If anybody's seen one, drop the link in for us please!

AnSolas · 01/03/2025 09:29

It may depend on the lenght of delay in their court system and how cases are organised.

The UK system is arranged where the police collect evidence and can arrest then release without charge, get search warrents without arresting anyone etc. and the CPS dont start the court process unless they are sure there is a good case and they have no investigation function. Some other systems need a minimum proof and then allow additional investigation.

The arrests were for named offences but even in the UK if the authority find other possible charges due to publicity around the arrest they can apply to the court to have time to investigate as a second bite of the cherry with a second trial can be unfair to the defendant. The defence should be given all the evidence and if the case is complex there are legal arguments (without jury) over what can be entered into evidence.
I know somone who was not picked for a jury where the case was expected to run for 4 to 6 months. The jury once picked heard the charges then were sent home for weeks while solicitors argued legal matters.

AlexaAdventuress · 01/03/2025 10:24

Thanks @AnSolas I hadn't realised there was a Wikipedia page specifically about this. Looks like the authors have been pretty thoroughly through a large number of press reports in a variety of languages. At least it gives a sense of the timeline as to how additional cases and charges are added into the mix.

After the initial detention inlate 2022/early 2023 I imagined that we'd hear soon that they were going away for 10 or 15 years, followed by a furtive, Gary Glitter-like existence for the rest of their lives. We can live in hope, eh?

https://news.sky.com/story/the-tates-and-trumps-inner-circle-the-deepening-ties-that-led-to-the-controversial-influencers-flying-to-freedom-in-america-13318676

Extracts:

But some of his closest advisors have been vocal in their support of the Tates. This includes Elon Musk, who in January responded to a video of Andrew Tate talking about running for prime minister of the UK, commenting, "he's not wrong".

Another recent endorsement came from Alina Habba, a counselor to the president and previous legal spokesperson for Mr Trump.
On 12 January this year she spoke to Tate on The Benny Show podcast – saying she was a "big fan" and telling him "I got your back over here".

But this support isn't new. The president’s son, Donald Trump Jr, has long been a fan of Andrew Tate. The two met at Trump Tower in New York in 2017, and in May 2023 he showed his support in a post on X where Tate vented about his house arrest - calling it "absolute insanity".

I think this like the case of Shamima Begum.

It's one thing to argue about whether she was treated justly.

It's another to be pro Isis.

(And I think the Tate brother's rhetoric on raping and killing women is comparable to terrorism. As far as I know Shamima Begum says she was brainwashed, but the Tate brothers have not retracted their comments).

AnSolas · 01/03/2025 10:46

They are not stupid people.

If it had been "just" the rape alligation it would be processed quicker. However the whole girlfriend / employee/ US citizen being held as a sex slave made it more complex.

Also when organising a prostitution "type" business one needs to look at the laws in the countries involved. Prostitution in and of its self may not be illegal but Brothel keeping /Pimping etc were historically chargable due to public outrage (moral and anti-slave basis and bring down the neighbourhood). So the individuals involved should have known to legal up upon arrest.

And sex offences are not a barrier in some social circles eg in a profession biting off of an ear was more shameful than serving time rape.

AlexaAdventuress · 01/03/2025 11:01

Yes I know! Hamlet's remark on 'the law's dealy' is more apposite thn ever.
