Putting this here as she deserves to be acknowledged as more than just a man’s unnamed wife.

Rest in peace, Betsy.

Bambees · 27/02/2025 09:47

Agree, OP. I'm finding it quite grating to hear 'Gene Hackman and his wife', and I liked Gene as an actor.

I know he's more famous, but she existed in her own right, not just in relation to him.

Preciousssssss · 27/02/2025 09:51

She was the same age as I am. It’s … unthinkable.

Thank you, OP. RIP, Betsy Arakawa.

Kuretake · 27/02/2025 09:58

Also lots of "oh he was 95 so a very good age" when Betsy was only 63.

Ddakji · 27/02/2025 09:59

Saw this on another thread. People saying “95 is a good age” and ignoring that she was only 63.

A terrible thing. RIP Betsy and Gene.

Jinx!

Trickedbyadoughnut · 27/02/2025 10:00

Thanks for this thread - 63 is so young. It's terribly sad.

TizerorFizz · 27/02/2025 10:02

She has been named all morning on the BBC. What on earth has happened? GH is 30 plus years older! It’s very upsetting. No foul play - so what could have happened? A pact?

Delphin · 27/02/2025 10:06

"No foul play - so what could have happened?"

Carbon monoxide poisoning, from a heating source/fireplace/...? As all of the inhabitants including the dog died, this seems possible.

ArabellaScott · 27/02/2025 11:02

When they say 'no foul play' do they mean no sign of violence?

Every time I read a story like this I am wary this means a family annihilation scenario. Hopefully I'm being cynical in this case.

I honestly hope so. I've possibly grown far too cynical but I'm wondering a bit whether this will turn out to be another "suicide pact" where it turns out to be less of a pact and more of a murder+suicide.

CanOfMangoTango · 27/02/2025 11:07

RIP Betsy. A very talented woman.

I was also struggling to work out what happened from the story.

I'm afraid that when I heard both had died and their dog that I assumed he had killed her. But I'm relieved to know that is likely not the case.

scandalito · 27/02/2025 11:10

Thank you OP, I feel just the same. Theres a tragedy here but it's not the
95 year old man.

RayonSunrise · 27/02/2025 11:14

Where is this "and his wife" phrasing? I've read her name in headlines on the Guardian and BBC - it's been a terribly shocking story.

I think in family annihilation scenarios they say "not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths" or something.

"No foul play" to me suggests something more like carbon monoxide poisoning.

ArabellaScott · 27/02/2025 11:21

All I've read is that they haven't said what the cause of death was yet.

Crikeyalmighty · 27/02/2025 11:23

@Delphin I'm thinking this too - we were suprised in the USA how archaic and neglected many heating , air con and ventilation systems looked

Yes, that's awful. RIP Flowers

Gettingbysomehow · 27/02/2025 12:22

I'm her age, I'm still young. She was a classical pianist in her own right. Such talent gone too soon.

On The World at One right now - the female presenter just referred to the male film star found dead along with his wife and his dog.

His wife and his dog.

Fuck my life.

Preciousssssss · 27/02/2025 13:26

A whole article. Two women - presenter and film woman - a good three or four minutes discussing his films and his life - settled down with his second wife - THEY DID NOT MENTION HER NAME ONCE.

I agree, this poor woman is being marginalised in her own tragic death. See also 'wife and daughter of bbc racing commentator'.
