Has anyone watched The Resident. It is a hot mess of wokeness

I am a sucker for a medical drama. Hasn't been a good one for ages. Started watching the Resident. I quite liked it as a commentary on the hideousness that is the American medical system, but then then lectures started. The last one was a furry, sad he couldn't make the furry convention, and wanting to wear his suit to surgery. There was an actual line "People think it's sexual, but it isn't at all" Lots of lecturing on colonialism, some interesting stuff on racism in medicine.

I am only on season 2. My bets for future storylines are

  1. Born in the wrong body, absolutely needs to have tits cut off, they all lived happily ever after

  2. 2 gay men using surrogate for baby making. She dies in child birth, but they all live happily ever after, except her, but she doesn't matter.

Any other bets?

HIVpos - I don't want information like that when I'm watching an action/adventure programme. I don't choose to be educated in a stealth way, so I switched it off. It's patronising.

I agree. I absolutely hate anything that has a whiff of "raising awareness" or educating the viewers. It is always going to be tedious and badly-written whatever the underlying sentiment. Children's programmes are bad at this too - and in my experience, children dislike "educational" programmes too!

New Amsterdam by far out wokes The Resident (I've watched all of both).

It's obviously brilliant that both of the lead characters are white males of course. And lets not forget how effortlessly they manage single-fatherhood (mainly by conveniently having on-site childcare, and forgetting the child exists most of the time).

Actually, childcare is something that does need a bit of awareness-raising! When my kids were at nursery and had to stay at home for illness, my boss just couldn't get her head around that I couldn't have a stand-by nanny just waiting for those days when they couldn't go in.

I was gutted by how they ruined New Amsterdam and I barely got through the first episode of The Resident.

PriOn1 · 04/02/2025 07:56

I’m much further on in The Resident and it has got better, rather than worse, I think. Other than the furry episode, I remember they briefly had a FtM transitioner as a member of staff, which I thought they might push into the forefront, but instead, quietly dropped away. I also thought Dr Okefor was wonderful. What an amazing, strong woman. I’m feeling there’s a bit of a shortage of strong, female characters at the moment. I hope that changes, but I’m still enjoying it.

I also loved the first two series of Designated Survivor, then gave up when it stopped being about a situation where the country was taken over by someone who wasn’t a career politician from a big US political family and started lecturing us on something or other. The message was so boring, I can’t even remember what it was, so whoever pushed it, entirely wasted their time, as far as I was concerned.

With NA they did a whole episode in sign language, with sub titles. I found it extremely annoying, because I tend to watch stuff like that in the background while I'm doing other things. So, I basically missed that episode.

The Only Murders In The Building did the same thing! Extremely annoying.

Didn't the do an audio description? Not very inclusive to visually-impaired viewers or people trying to cook dinner at the same time.

If they had, I wouldn't have posted what I did, would I?

I assume one can turn on audio description but I've never needed it so don't know how to and it would be irritating to suddenly realise you needed it and scramble to find it for one episode. My mum's old TV once got stuck with it on, and it was incredibly annoying.

I recommend the second series of Colin from Accounts depiction of furries.

Well yes, which is why the single dad with the magically disappearing toddler doesn't help.

I intensely disliked New Amsterdam dude - floating around, making pronouncements and dropping it on people to 'make it work', then money mysteriously being found. He was so selfish and incapable of thinking deeper than a surface level.

At least The Resident dude seemed to be likeable.

Do they have anything vaguely critical of the American medical system or Pharmaceutical system?

Pretty much the whole premise of New Amsterdam.

madamepresident · 04/02/2025 12:56

The Pitt is a new one to watch - has Noah Wyle (Dr Carter from ER ) in it

I did find it amusing when they went to London and clearly had no idea about how an NHS might work...

Leoislazy · 04/02/2025 13:06

The Resident becomes so dull, I gave up around season 3, I think . I kept hoping for it to get better. The Dr Okefor actress was brilliant but the storylines all became a little dull in their over-the-topness. And I got the ick with Dr what’sit and his head tilt, hands in pockets smirking at everyone.

Leoislazy · 04/02/2025 13:07

@Adamante black doves was brilliant, so true!

I love that they did that. The frustration you felt is what it's like to be deaf in a world designed for those that hear. There are so many things not subtitled or that should be but put up a message to say that it's not working. I miss out on so much because of this and it's good for others to have an inkling of my daily life

Taytoface · 04/02/2025 13:20

Oooh that is a better idea. What are the storylines they could be telling but they aren't.

Woman doc, top of her field gets canned because she has 3 kids, a difficult ex husband, no family near by and one child has a chronic health condition. She gets canned because she can't always prioritise work. But no one cares because she is a woman.

Woman doc, also top of her field. Hits the menopause hard, can barely string a sentence together some days. HRT medication gives her migraines. Gets canned because of poor performance. But no one cares because she is an older woman.

No need to be snarky! You just said that you didnt know how to turn it on anyway so how do you know?!

Igmum · 04/02/2025 17:25

I've only just watched Designated Survivor (because I'm that out of date) and agree the insane wokery was dire. I would have liked it to finish after about 8 episodes in season one when it was still the who-is-behind-this-fiendish-plot. After that we got one fiendish plot per episode which then gave way to Kiefer as SuperWokeBro who kept asking people to trust him. And it always worked because who wouldn't trust a politician?

Negroany · 04/02/2025 20:14

You asked if they 'did an audio description' which I took to mean you asking if they did it automatically. They didn't.

I am aware that one can activate it oneself on the TV as my mum had it (stuck) on hers, but I don't know how to do it on mine because I don't use it. For completeness, I got my mum a new TV, it's the same as mine (so that I could walk her through things remotely if she needed help) and she didn't want it on, so I never did it on hers either.

But when NA, and later Only Murders, did silent episodes it didn't occur to me to poke around in the settings and turn on the audio description (which is ALWAYS there, so means that your question "did they" must have referred to them putting it on themselves automatically).

I started watching The Resident but I'm not finding it realistic or compelling at all so I've given up.

I watched it when it was on in the US. Not very realistic and some really "out there" story lines that didn't make much sense, along with the every week dire illness that magically gets cured, or not, within the hour and frequently had amazingly "never heard of before" treatments. My favorite was the evil doctor who was horrible for a couple of seasons and then, boom became an angel. It was like he had an exorcism.
