Has anyone watched The Resident. It is a hot mess of wokeness

I am a sucker for a medical drama. Hasn't been a good one for ages. Started watching the Resident. I quite liked it as a commentary on the hideousness that is the American medical system, but then then lectures started. The last one was a furry, sad he couldn't make the furry convention, and wanting to wear his suit to surgery. There was an actual line "People think it's sexual, but it isn't at all" Lots of lecturing on colonialism, some interesting stuff on racism in medicine.

I am only on season 2. My bets for future storylines are

1. Born in the wrong body, absolutely needs to have tits cut off, they all lived happily ever after

2. 2 gay men using surrogate for baby making. She dies in child birth, but they all live happily ever after, except her, but she doesn't matter.

Any other bets?

Sounds like the American version of Doctors in UK. They had a storyline about the poor Furries recently if I remember correctly. I'm sure there was a thread about it.

House is very un PC until the last series or so, he is very misogynistic although that's very much part of his character. Lots of 'fat shaming' from the young Aussie one but I think that pretty much lines up with the times though. I think that program actually shows the shift in sexism at work, fat shaming, trans etc and the change of opinion through the time it was produced for better and worse.

I didn't watch the last series of Designated Survivor as it was so woke. I don't want a lecture on how to think or to know details about male gay sex. Shame. I actively avoid things if I sense wokeness that I would usually watch. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot in terms of viewing figures.

HPandthelastwish - it's the one programme where I really noticed it and it wasn't done deftly either. It was really jarring to suddenly be confronted with someone's ideology in the middle of action and adventure. I really enjoyed the first two series so was annoyed to be lectured to in the third and in such a clumsy way too. Such a shame. I refuse to be lectured to; it's obnoxious.

It was weird that it became a huge plot point in an entirely unrelated show, but Netflix was very captured at that stage I think. A huge storyline in The BabySitters club which I'm sure didn't feature in the books in the 90s. Also in Moxie which was about standing up to toxic masculinity, and a witchy one possibly the new Craft as well as Sabrina. I don't notice it as much now but that might be because my general watching of Netflix decreased anyway because of that.

HP - my viewing on Netflix went down after series 3 of Designated Survivor too. I cancelled it for about 18 months - not because of that but because I was moving and had had a period of just not being able to find anything to watch on it. I've recently signed up again and the wokeness seems less, thankfully. I haven't seen those other programmes you mention. Series 3 Designated Survivor was 2019 so maybe peak wokeness, or the start of it.

I thought it was just me regarding Designated Survivor but I've just had a search and there is a Reddit thread where one person says "It just seems like a checklist of what the writers wanted to make political commentary on. It's painful to watch." with loads of others agreeing. The list of things mentioned by others included: "gay sex scene, trans issues that make no sense to the main story line, corrupt pharma companies, terrorism on every non white racial group story line, perpetrated by, you guessed it, ultra white supremacy group! A story line featuring an HIV positive guy screwing another guy then telling him after the fact that he's positive, but everything is just great after!" It was brainwashing! So glad I turned it off.

I'll avoid The Resident, I think. Thanks for the warning. I was thinking of watching it.

I started watching The Resident but I'm not finding it realistic or compelling at all so I've given up.

Just clarifying here regarding the HIV storyline, this was to raise awareness on several fronts including that due to being on effective meds he was no risk to his partner, black gay men are disproportionately affected, the stigma experienced by people with HIV and the law around its criminalisation the US depending on which state you live in - thankfully different in the UK. Just factual information.

Sex Education final series was ruined by it.

I really love the resident. I binge watched every single episode and was so sad it ended. I loved muna Okeford, the raptor and hiw can you not absolutely adore dr conrad hawkins 😍😍😍

Yes! It was an entertaining bit of nonsense til the lectures started. I remember a quip about Brexit at one point, I mean whatever side you stood on, what the hell do they know to make snide remarks!

HIVpos - I don't want information like that when I'm watching an action/adventure programme. I don't choose to be educated in a stealth way, so I switched it off. It's patronising.

Twinklytoots - I don't remember Brexit being mentioned but I stopped watching pretty quickly. Exactly! Who is another country to lecture the UK on something like Brexit - none of their business and just unnecessary in an entertainment programme.

I love it too! Good easy watch if you take it for what it is. Which is an entertainment show.

It's ok to not want to have sex with someone who has HIV even if they can't transmit it. You never know if that might change, if they take their meds correctly etc. Most people would rather not catch something that would leave them dependent on meds for life, or die. Withholding that information from partners or shaming people who don't want to take the risk is gross behaviour akin to coercion

I watched all the eps of the resident and I didn't see anything like that. Maybe I vagued out. I liked it because I had breast cancer and all the chemotherapy dodginess was interesting to me.
And I also used to work in a private hospital and all they talked about was money which they cover in the show too.

It's obviously brilliant that both of the lead characters are white males of course. And lets not forget how effortlessly they manage single-fatherhood (mainly by conveniently having on-site childcare, and forgetting the child exists most of the time).

What I hate is the way they suck you in with one or two decent episodes, with minimal woke, so you’ve become invested and are enjoying the programme - then episode three, it arrives like a sledge hammer. Even more annoying, it’s perfectly possible to cast in a diverse way with subtle messaging see “Black Doves” for example on Netflix, which was totally brilliant with a gay man as its lead who had a black partner and very strong women leads. But no, they have to keep smashing us over the head with it.
