‘My 10 year old son loved it, he bought all the figurines, dressed up as David Tennant ‘

I don’t think many more dc will be doing this, in the light of recent events…

The BBC are in a time warp / parallel universe of their own, shared only by the Graun, and maybe some of the wider reaches of Reddit.

What's Tennant said to have done ?

There's definitely all sorts of weird shit going on with the scripting, but that comes with the territory when it's a JJ Abrams show.

Mostly I'm just there for the performances. Ron Rifkin playing Sloane is one of the best villains I can think of.

Apart from ruining Star Trek, I will never forgive Jar Jar Abrams for doing that bloody TED talk about mystery box storytelling!!!! He set so much of this modern crap storytelling off with his way of viewing stories and characters.

I just don't understand why they can't get good writers?

Are they looking for good writers? Or just the Right Sort of writers with the right sort of opinions and agendas?.

SionnachRuadh · 03/02/2025 01:33

Abrams and Whedon are the Gog and Magog of modern screenwriting.

RTD is merely a minor imp or demon by comparison.

TempestTost · 03/02/2025 01:41

Mystery Box is really just a gimmick IMO.

The problem is there is no meaning. Just images that seem intriguing but no substance.

So it becomes entirely about style, cool images. And then fan service. Virtue signaling is the closest they can come to giving them meaning but it's just images too.

OK, Wikipedia has kindly informed me why I have no idea what is going on on this thread. I was about 3 years old when the original set of series ended and about 19 or 20 when the current set of series started. It has never been on my radar.

Is it worth watching? I can watch almost anything through the miracle of Kodi. Where should I start?

Now I'm curious to know if someone can get into it who didn't start watching in their formative years.
... Why do I always press "post" so impulsively?
My favourite Doctor was Sylvetyr MCcoy, who almost noone likes, but I guess it's my age - when I watched him I was on the cusp of adolescence and watching something dark and ambiguous for the first time.
I couldn't get into the revamp.
But agree with PP who suggested you could start with anything up to the tenth doctor.
Like I said, I'd be curious to know how any of the Drs strike someone watching as an adult for the first time.

I am beginning to think that they do think that it is good. They look at all the boxes that it ticks and they are all ticked. If it ticks all the boxes how can it not be good. The audience isn't very high for the programme... well, there must be something wronmg with the audience.

FlowchartRequired · 03/02/2025 08:37

I also want to add that I love Buffy, Angel, Firefly etc. They were really well done (bar a few blips) by the Mutant Enemy team. Trek programmes had a different feel and tone, and that is what worked for them. Trying to shoehorn the Mutant Enemy feel into something that doesn't fit is frankly stupid. I think it shows that they don't understand why the former or the latter worked. It stinks of poor surface level understanding that identifies as a talented expert.

What's Tennant said to have done ?

he is not "said to have done" anything. He has very visibly and vocally taken up a position on the RSOH and has made some very anti-womens-rights comments.

Tomatotater · 03/02/2025 08:59

Tennant has gone down massively in my estimation since he started hawking out his nepo babies.

Brefugee · 03/02/2025 09:04

tbh if he was just being an ally it wouldn't bother me, after all he has a trans child so is bound to be very sympathetic and supportive. It's all the rest that bugs me.
Didn't know about his nepo babies - given his wife (isn't she the daughter of someone famous?) - but these days it's par for the course, isn't it? moreso than it has ever been before.

Back to Who - my favourite was Tom Baker even though i watched as a very small child when it was in black & white (I only remember hiding from daleks). I preferred stories over 4 eps, but am ok with longer eps in the new version. Favourite new one is Ecclestone - Tenant had good stories but the overly emotional/enunciated anger/tragedy got on my nerves a bit.

But Capaldi absolutely ruined it for me, i can't watch the old ones now because - urgh. Tried the new ones. Meh. ho hum, i had a good run.

His wife is Peter Davison, the fifth Dr Who’s daughter, again another nepotism baby herself.

I was a massive DT fan, but his arrogance and the way he’s put down women under the guise of “inclusivity” has put me right off him.

SionnachRuadh · 03/02/2025 10:52

Yeah, it would be understandable him feeling compelled to be an ally, but the vitriol he aims at women who disagree with him - which evidently he takes to be a criticism of his parenting - is very telling.

As George Smiley once said:

He's a fanatic. And the fanatic is always concealing a secret doubt.

CuriousAlien · 03/02/2025 11:05

This thread just gets better and better.

I hadn't heard of the mystery box thing, thanks @UtopiaPlanitia

I just read a reddit post about it and Lost and seeing it as a form of con or even a cult where only the leader is allowed to have the answers. (I wonder if some versions of trans ideology are like that, the person is offered a shiny mystery box which promises them peace in themselves but when it opens they just find another box, and another and another.)

In contrast to that, I read an interview with Celine Sciamma where she talked about allowing the characters and the situation to give rise to the organic consequence. For me, her film Petite Mamam is a beautiful intricate unfolding mystery. Totally the opposite of the style talked about here.

He's spoken up in support of trans rights.

That's his father in law, his wife is Georgia.
Love David Tennant, definitely one of my favourite doctors.

There's lots out there if you really do want to know, Google's a big place.
In case you are doing that thing where you don't really want to know at all, I'll refer you to one of this board 's favourite sayings - women aren't your support humans, you can do your own work.

MakeYourOwnMusicStartYourOwnDance · 03/02/2025 11:33

Sorry if that sounds blunt and you are being genuine, but past experience on here it's never the way.
Anyways, as you were 😁

Exactly, there's been loads of threads on him.
The search function on MN still works as far as I know if anyone genuinely wants to know.
It's not exactly hidden or not been spoken about on here.

That's what they said, but you edited it to remove that part. That was really disingenuous of you.
