Well they've actually done it. The clock is turned back.

Iraqi lawmakers pass a bill that critics say legalizes child marriage | AP News https://search.app/Q6qxBRRGpiwv1CzeA
The session ended in chaos and accusations of procedural violations.“Half of the lawmakers present in the session did not vote, which broke the legal quorum,” a parliamentary official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly. He said that some members protested loudly and others climbed onto the parliamentary podium.

Again, it isn't just Islamic countries.

Have you listened to the news about Governments in some eastern European countries, and even Italy - "God, fatherland, and family" ?

If you have clear examples of laws being rescinded in Christian countries to allow the abuse of women and children under the guise of religion why not start another thread.

If you only want Islam to be discussed why not put that in the thread title.

The patriarchy is a global problem.

You can start a thread when it happens. This thread is about Iraq caving to regressive Islam.

Islam isn't regressive. Please do your research before making statements. Unfortunately people in power like to twist and turn religious teachings for personal gain.
One could argue because Trump is white he's automatically a Christian therefore everything he says is trash so Christianity is bad. No Christianity is fine just trump is warped just like those men in Iraq that have passed this law, it has nothing to do with religion.

For heaven's sake. The term regressive Islam assumes such a thing as progressive Islam.
No rational person would argue that skin colour is tied to Christianity. There are loads of threads about Trump this is not one of them.

This is specific to Iraq and the particular political situation there. Not everything is about America.

Jeez. It was a analogy. This thread had nothing to do with religion, you mentioned Islam. The leaders who passed the abhorrent bill in Iraq have nothing to do with Islam. Just like Trump and his idiocy has absolutely nothing to do with being white or his religion. I was making a comparison so you can understand how ignorant it sounds.Your right there are lots of threads on here about Trump but this thread was about Iraq and it's laws not Islam.

You really don't seem to understand the situation in Iraq. What do you think the terms Sunni and Shia refer to.

It's good to hear there's going to be an appeal.

Iraq parliament passes disputed laws, could allow child marriage search.app/VjovJQ91TbHf9WNs9

Women's rights organisations have called on Iraqi families to register marriages in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, where the law does not apply unless ratified by the regional parliament. Kabashi further stated that legal action would be taken through Iraq's Supreme Federal Court to annul the law.

How can you compare Italy with that shit country? Italy is doing very well keeping the country safe from the paedos and criminals afaik.

Well, the situation for girls has taken a clear turn for the worst.

Dozens of baby-faced schoolgirls drift through worn, neon-lit shops on
“bridal boulevard” in Baghdad’s Sadr City wearing black abayas soon to be traded for puffball wedding gowns picked by their mothers.

In January, Iraq passed an amendment to its personal status law, which allows citizens to choose sect-specific religious courts to oversee their marriage affairs. This came after years of lobbying from Shia political parties to opt out of Iraq’s civil law, which has legally protected against underage marriage since the 1950s.

Ghezi, who oversees shelters for runaway girls of forced marriage under The Organisation of Women’s Freedom Iraq (OWFI) in Baghdad, said: “We have seen a growing black market in Iraq where fathers are selling their daughters, pulling them out of education, mostly because of poverty … but they have been encouraged by some [clerics] who may benefit.”

Shaking and tearful, child brides are big business in Iraq

The wedding industry is booming after reform that campaigners say is creating a black market in vulnerable girls

Fucking hell. Why are paedos winning worldwide?

It's downright weird. My only guess is too many people have spent a couple of decades soaking in porn on the internet and can't see women as actual humans.

The Guardian has a rather more factual report on what happened.
www.theguardian.com/society/2025/jan/21/iraq-passes-laws-that-critics-say-will-allow-child-marriage

The Guardian 'factual' article is 11 months old about the debate about the proposed law from Associated Press in Baghdad. This was the subject of this thread. This is an update.

This Times article is about the consequences in real life now by
Shayma Bakht who is an award-winning reporter at The Times, specialising in international investigations. She has led undercover exposés, frontline reports and high-risk dispatches on three continents. Her work has taken her inside Islamic State prisons, Cambodian scam factories and on Kurdish smuggling routes — and brought her face to face with Saudi royalty, Pakistani leaders and Houthi pirates. Her investigation into the Homes for Ukraine scheme was cited by the United Nations in a warning to the British government, earning her the title of young journalist of the year at the British Press Awards. She was named in Forbes’s 30 Under 30 list and won MHP’s international affairs award

Hope that helps.

The tweet is as follows (above a close-up pic of the two politicians smiling, shaking hands and swapping signed document):

"A new era for UK-Iraq co-operation. We are working together on trade, growth, and a first-of-its-kind returns agreement to help crack down on organised immigration crime. Welcome to Downing Street, Prime Minister Al-Sudani."

A returns agreement. So a woman fleeing with her children to protect her daughters from child marriage would be sent home.
