Well they've actually done it. The clock is turned back.

Iraqi lawmakers pass a bill that critics say legalizes child marriage | AP News https://search.app/Q6qxBRRGpiwv1CzeA
The session ended in chaos and accusations of procedural violations.“Half of the lawmakers present in the session did not vote, which broke the legal quorum,” a parliamentary official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly. He said that some members protested loudly and others climbed onto the parliamentary podium.

Intisar al-Mayali, a human rights activist and a member of the Iraqi Women’s League, said passage of the civil status law amendments “will leave disastrous effects on the rights of women and girls, through the marriage of girls at an early age, which violates their right to life as children, and will disrupt the protection mechanisms for divorce, custody and inheritance for women.”

HarpyOfACertainAge · 23/01/2025 15:11

Just awful 😞

Daleksatemyshed · 23/01/2025 16:42

Disgraceful, how can anyone look at a child that age and think they're ready for marriage.

CreationNat1on · 23/01/2025 16:49

Child abuse.

What a bunch of paedophiles

Flustration · 23/01/2025 17:18

Terrifying. Aside from the horror of being married off to dirty old men for money, how many of these girls will be forced into repeated 'temporary marriages'?

I cant get the OP link to work. Must be something to do with having a search link that is alien to my computer!

There was an earlier thread about this, and from what I remember what was said on that and on what is said in the article link below, this is about handing power back to religious sects, to legitimse marriages rather than what has been civil law.

Patriarchal religions clearer do not have women's rights in mind. As we see in so many countries were Christian dogma dominates the political agenda. Like many statements now coming out of the White House.

Iraq: Revised 'sectarian' law that raised fears over child marriage passed without vote

MP says new Personal Status Law amendment no longer allows child marriage but concerns remain over impact of legislation

Child marriage is abhorrent and should be outlawed everywhere including the UK and the USA.

It was only outlawed in England and Wales in 2023, and is still legal in Scotland (I would have to check NI). 16 not 9 but still a child.

In the USA it was legal until 2018in all states and is still legal in a number of states, four states have no minimum age for marriage meaning in theory a man could marry a toddler.

This is unequivocally evil. For shame. And pushed through despite not being quorate.

FFS! Starmer is being so ineffective, incompetent and demonstrably lacking in compassion when it comes to the girls affected by this horrific new law in Iraq and the girls affected by rape gangs in the UK. If our Prime Minister doesn’t feel moved to rage and want justice for all these girls, what are we supposed to do?!

The tweet is as follows (above a close-up pic of the two politicians smiling, shaking hands and swapping signed document):

"A new era for UK-Iraq co-operation. We are working together on trade, growth, and a first-of-its-kind returns agreement to help crack down on organised immigration crime. Welcome to Downing Street, Prime Minister Al-Sudani."

Thanks - so trade and "returns agreement" (??) are of more value that women.

Labour has not just one but two Ministers for Women. This complete negation of the reality for women just shows how much importance women's rights have for Labour.

Disgusting.

Surely even in the most liberal of Labour values would have allowed him to make some references that whilst wanting good trade relations, the UK notes (or some diplomatic word) that women are still waiting for equality in Iraq.

I wasn't aware that Trump considered himself a Christian - though I suppose he is nominally. The founder of Christianity - not the one who made it mysogynistic, that's St. Paul - had a lot of sympathy for women. The oft given example that he objected to divorce, starts off as a protection for women from being arbitrarily divorced by their husbands (though it then says either party to a divorce who remarries commits adultery - not so good, but at least not sexist). Said founder was also surrounded by women - this is clear from some stories - and on one occasion likens God to a woman (the widow's mite).
Christianity is no loadstone for good treatment of women, but it's a lot better than some. It has never accepted having sexual intercourse with children, though some have covered up such abuse, of course. The founder suggested that such people would be better off if they hung a millstone round their neck and jumped in the sea, i.e. suicide (forbidden) was better than to live with the crime and its consequences.
NB Not being an apologist, just pointing out the founder of Christianity did not support the barbarity that the founder of another (younger) religion does.

IwantToRetire · 25/01/2025 20:12

I have no idea about Trump.

I was referring to any number of countries where thans to zealot Christians this particular religion has taken over numerous parts of the world.

Obviously in the US it is hugely influential in some sort to Protestants fundamentalist way. So Trump will want to court them.

But also in many Catholic countries women are paying a price for how that is practiced in their region. ie women imprisoned on the suspicion of abortion, when more likely a miscarriage, and worse.

JRSKSSBH · 25/01/2025 20:16

Better hurry up with those blasphemy laws Starmer.

BlueSilverCats · 25/01/2025 20:20

Fuck. While child marriage is the most disturbing part, from what I remember this was about a lot more like women's rights in marriage, divorce , child arrangements and inheritance. Some of those women and girls will have nothing left, and I'm not talking about money.

Exactly, as in any county which becomes a theocracy women are subjucated.

This is about undoing what small advances had been made by introducing civil law into marriage etc..

This is giving power by to the religious hierarchy.

Which by the way I suspect if Trump thought this would be cheaper and less bothersome than having to deal with opposing politics, he would endorse in the USA!

This is not the first time in recent history an Islamic country has sought to role back women’s rights in the name of throwing off Western values, I can’t remember which country recently had parliamentarians who tried ( and failed) to legalize fgm on this basis.

Again, it isn't just Islamic countries.

Have you listened to the news about Governments in some eastern European countries, and even Italy - "God, fatherland, and family" ?
