This post features a very disturbing imagine of a non verbal young person with no top on who has had a mastectomy

I thought I was past the point of being 'peaked' but here we are again. How can anyone think this is ok? Not just the mutilation of a healthy body but also the exploitation for social media and now a "go fund me" - who is caring for this young person? How can this be happening?

The flip side was also listening to doctors explain the surgery and the vast majority took v little time, used medical jargon and minimised risks.

I should think most surgeons find themselves time-pressured as you describe, and defaulting to jargon and it's wretched that this hasn't improved over time.

Years ago, I read a piece by a neurosurgeon about informed consent for highly specialised brain surgery. His perspective was that if patients and their family weren't sobbing with fear by the time he'd finished going through the potential risks, then he hadn't explained them adequately. He'd give them time to settle and then start again. The cycle would continue until such time as he felt that they truly understood the risks.

He sounds a bit extreme but I’d imagine for a neurosurgeon the risks of the patient having a life altering complication is significantly high. They are operating on the brain after all. Still not well understood. However, he’s definitely the exception and not the rule.

These operations are everyday for the surgeon. Literally their day job so the risks don’t stand out for them. Even the surgeons undertaking risky experimental ‘gender reassignment’ surgery won’t really be thinking of the patient. Their focus is on the procedure. Shame we don’t have an intermediary to act as translator or advocate between patients and surgeons for high risk surgeries.

Sobbing with fear? He sounds like a sadist.

Leaving aside all the ethical issues of this surgery, and all "gender affirming" surgeries, if this person has mental capacity then their disability is mostly irrelevant.

I'd guess they have had to fight for any degree of control over their own life, with well meaning others trying to make decisions for them because of the disability.

As a society if we are prepared to offer this operation to non disabled people then the only reason not to offer it to disabled but with capacity people is if it is medically contraindicated, and that should be strictly between Dr and patient, not our business.

I’m really appalled at some people combining gender critical beliefs (which anyone has a right to have) and rampant discrimination towards someone with a disability. My job involves assessing capacity and you can’t look at someone and tell if they have it. Uncontrolled movements, assisted speech and physical disabilities have no impact on capacity. All those using “non verbal” to imply something about capacity to make decisions should maybe have a think about Stephen Hawking. A stroke doesn’t mean no capacity, cerebral palsy doesn’t mean no capacity, a learning disability (which 50% of people with CP DON’T have) doesn’t mean no capacity.

People with disabilities have just as much of a right to live their lives however they wish as anyone else. And that includes making decisions others view as bad or harmful.

PS they sound more articulate and intellectual than most people here (even if you disagree with the message):
