Ivor Caplin, 66, was apparently arrested in Brighton yesterday and his flat searched after a sting operation by paedophile hunters. It is alleged that he thought he was on his way to have sex with a 15yo boy. His X/Twitter feed, maintained in his own name and followed by many senior Labour figures, was reportedly littered with explicit sexual images from which it would seem he has a strong sexual attraction to very young men. Odd behaviour for an ex-MP running a consultancy of some sort now.

This news story from some months ago was from around the time he was either suspended or chucked out from the Labour Party after undisclosed serious allegations. It may of course be a coincidence. No charges appear to have followed this incident, according to people digging around and reporting back on X. https://www.brightonandhovenews.org/2024/06/20/hove-man-arrested-over-alleged-sex-attack-on-homeless-person/

He was on GB News a few days ago objecting to Elon Musk's wild rants against Jess Phillips and Keir Starmer. This is being portrayed on X as Caplin not wanting too much scrutiny of paedophile activity. I'm sure this couldn't possibly be the case.

Wife yikes having seen his twitter/X account I thought he was a single gay man.
Warning that his account is full of dick pics if anyone was thinking of looking at it. Though there's plenty of screen shots of it online with the dick pics sensored

Thanks for the warning!

Surely ex-wife? His poor kids, though. Adults now, but even so.

Musk has cleaned up X a lot. Do you not remember the TRA campaign of posting explicit pornography to JKR’s thread calling for children’s artwork for her Ikabog book? That was pre-musk.

Swings and roundabouts. I've no idea what improvements he's made. I do know before he bought Twitter, it was moderated by people with a strong bias against anybody critical of gender ideology. They were pretty hot on homophobia and racism, though. After Musk took over and made huge staff cuts it became almost impossible to get any report acted on, including obvious virulent anti-semitism, homophobia and racism. He seems to be of the view that anything goes, in the name of free speech, even when it's quite obviously inciting violence.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g when musk sacked all those moderation staff the rampant CSA images and accounts advertising csa images that old twitter didn't have enough staff to deal with got dealt with asap.
Now I'm not going to say that there's no CSA images on X but if you report any that you come across it gets taken down immediately and that's a massive improvement.
I can't comment on the racism because I haven't seen any changes in it from before. I have seen a large increase in antisemitism on all msm and sm sites though, it does seem to be acceptable now unfortunately.

Yes, I do remember that, but I also remember that JKR reported those images to Twitter, who then removed them. So either no one has reported Caplin's tweets to Twitter, or they have reported them and Twitter haven't acted.

Then again, I agree that this hasn't necessarily got worse since Musk took over. You would expect porn tweets to have been picked up and deleted automatically, and that doesn't seem to have happened, either then or now.

WeCantGoOverIt · 13/01/2025 10:07

The large increase in antisemitism is to do with the Gaza conflict not ownership of SM.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/01/2025 10:11

Agreed, but it's not being removed as fast as it would have been a few years back. I can't speak for Facebook as I've never been on that, but I used to be on Twitter a lot more than I am now on X, and antisemitism was one thing that did usually get removed. I reported something not too long ago and got the 'Sorry this isn't what you want to hear' automated response not long afterwards. I only report when there's no possible doubt what I'm seeing and if it's part of a pattern of posting. It used to be possible to add several tweets to a report so the moderators could be alerted to a pattern too. Now it isn't, so you report one tweet and it is almost always just left up.

Deliberate policy, I'd say, both before and after Musk. I have sometimes come across very explicit images, i.e. involving genitalia and sexual activity, and reported them, to no effect. This surprised me back in the days when I was naive enough to think that they would care, given that the minimum age to have a Twitter account was 13. It doesn't surprise me now. I assume they were somehow making money out of having people post stuff like this. I've never quite understood the economics of X/Twitter.

Just coming back to this - I've never really understood the economics either. I assumed that most of their money came from advertising, which would probably have been tied to numbers using the platform, so the more people who use Twitter, the more Twitter was able to attract advertisers. Then again, surely some advertisers would feel queasy about advertising on a site that was partly being used to host porn?

We also know that a lot of advertisers withdrew from Twitter when Musk took over, and I don't know how it makes money now - I assume he doesn't get very much from charging people for the blue tick. Do those endless fake ads about Stacey Solomon bring in much money, I wonder?

The main thing that now seems clear, however, is that Musk isn't really using Twitter to make money. The reason he paid $44bn for it was to push his own political agenda. But I'm really stumped as to why that political agenda currently seems to be focused on events in the UK rather than in the US, when Musk's close ally Trump is days from taking power.

I'm suggesting they must be scared, because I can't fathom why, for example, the official Labour Party twitter account unfollowed then Labour MP Rosie Duffield years back in reaction to her gender critical posts, while continuing to follow Eric Joyce. I can't see how you could be a Labour MP or Labour staffer and see following Rosie Duffield as a reputational risk while simultaneously being unaware of Eric Joyce's conviction for downloading videos of children being sexually abused.

Maybe they're in favour of Eric Joyce's posts and not Rosie Duffield's? I bet if more people knew this, fewer would have voted Labour though. Paedophilia / child sexual abuse is a big vote loser with the general population even if the party's in favour.

I haven’t checked veracity but this seems a lot of similar types:

x.com/wolsned/status/1878449933671420223?s=46&t=TMUOZCqGbx3Pv9MjeQqrig

I have only glanced at that list but Cyril Smith was a Liberal politician not a Labour one, and also has been dead years - so I'm not inclined to take the list seriously, where's it from?

duc748 · 13/01/2025 12:06

Cyril Smith was Labour first, as the link rightly says. But it was a long time ago.

Ilikeanicecupofteainthemorning · 13/01/2025 12:20

no, he was originally a liberal politician, switched to Labour in 1950 and left in 1966
so his history of sexual offending is hardly proof of the Labour party condoning sexual assualts
as PP have said, you will find these men in all political parties, and all walks of life

noblegiraffe · 13/01/2025 16:04

I googled 'Tory Councillor arrest child abuse' and got a load of stories, so yes, not restricted to one party. I also saw a list that was similar to the one posted up thread that had a mix of parties on it, so limiting to Labour was done deliberately.

The twitter algorithm a few weeks ago decided that I was really interested in seeing racist comments about Indian people, which was horrendous. So not only was twitter not dealing with the comments, it was actively promoting them into my timeline.

WeCantGoOverIt · 13/01/2025 17:14

Child abuse by Labour politicians is more relevant that those by Tories when Labour were the ones that whipped a vote against an inquiry into the systematic child sex abuse and torture of thousands of girls by ‘grooming’ (rape) gangs in overwhelmingly Labour constituencies. Especially when they follow an ex MP with porn on his feed who was wheeled out to defend Labour policy on this just before he was arrested.

Other parties record on abusive politicians might be just as bad but they didn’t vote against the inquiry.

I thought he’d been hacked. The posts are so bizarre.

It crossed my mind too. Or dementia/brain tumour where all inhibitions are lost.

Bizarre is definitely the word.

Ilikeanicecupofteainthemorning · 13/01/2025 18:59

I doubt he was 'wheeled out to defend labour' when he had been suspended by the party months earlier

letmeeatcrisps · 13/01/2025 20:17

The CPS account following him!! Reposting 3”11 male sex workers then the next tweet is about exposing CSE?!?! Omfg. These men are deranged
