Fury as women hit by pension age rise denied payouts www.bbc.com/news/articles/czr36842nd6o

Wow... it hadn't occurred to me that the ombudsman report on this would just be ignored.

With you there Errol. It's appalling the government can ignore the ombudsman. I strongly suspect ageism and misogyny is fuelling this. Older women? Nah, who cares.

shellyleppard · 17/12/2024 14:15

its bloody disgusting how they are being ignored!!!

oakleaffy · 17/12/2024 14:17

No one cares about a bunch of older women, clearly.

Pension age and pension bus passes outside of London are ramping up.

senua · 17/12/2024 14:18

Labour hitting the elderly again? They are going to get themselves a reputation.

Mylovelygreendress · 17/12/2024 14:19

First the WFP , now this .
Shameful .

They just hit anyone they think may have previously voted Tory: pensioners, farmers, parents with kids at independent schools and now WASPI women. Every single policy revolves around this, they are all revenge policies/moves.
There is money for train drivers, post masters etc as they are seen as being Labour voters.

100% agree .

I'm amazed women didn't see this coming years ago though. The pension age for women should have been equalised with men at the same time the equal pay act came in, they've been living on borrowed time since then. How can they act like it's a huge great shock to have something so blatantly unfair corrected.

Wasn't it proven to have been government maladministration though? That's why the ombudsman recommended compensation?

RethinkingLife · 17/12/2024 14:31

I have a family member affected by this. She never expected that this would be paid, despite the Ombudsman.

PronounssheRa · 17/12/2024 14:36

Didn't most Labour MPs completely back the WASPI women, is this another promise they have renaged on?

I imagine the cost is a drop in the ocean compared to other costs the government has committed to.

Yes they did, Starmer gave a statement on it backing their campaign and lots of Labour MPs photographed suppprting during the campaign around 2019/2020

That's two completely different things.Confused
One, powerful mainly male union. Yep.
The other, a massive, life-ruining shameful miscarriage of justice - and pretty sure the persecuted subpostmasters and mistresses don't particularly fall into the 'labour voter' demographic.

So strange. I could swear before the election, these boards had plenty of posters ready to tell us how Labour would definitely be better for women and those of us who thought different were wrong/right wing/didn't understand?

I’m a WASPI woman and I never expected it to be paid either. I can’t be arsed to throw my toys out of my pram either. I thought Corbyn was bonkers to promise it.

Hello... So why didn't the Tories compensate? 14 years to do so, perhaps thats why they lost the GE ?

But moving fwd, how would raise the £10.3 billion require? which taxes? what spending cuts? or would you do what the Tories did and increase borrowing?

Lab already have to fund billions for Blood, PO and Gays in the military scandals, non of which the previous Govt set aside any money for.

Ten Billion isn't a drop in the Ocean, it would solve NHS dentistry and provide most elderly with free care for around 2 years.

Labour never mentioned WASPI women in their manifesto, neither did the Tories, who had 14 years to settle the issue, seeing as they caused it.

Its really is as a one off payment.

It may not have been in the manifesto, but there are lots of examples of Labour MPs supporting WASPI women publicly so people would have taken from that that they wouldn't be shafted when Labour came to government

Erm cutting the winter fuel allowance was part of the Conservative 2017 manifesto - people have such short memories (many deliberately so).

And yet they didn't.

People can keep referring to the Tories but it's labour who are in power. They have cut WFA and have now refused to compensate WASPI women, despite saying those with the broadest shoulders would carry the biggest burden.

ArabellaScott · 17/12/2024 16:27

No but any insinuation that it is purely a preserve of Labour is more than a little disingenuous and who introduced the fuel allowance for wealthy pensioners who didn't need it? Well that was the Tories too wasn't it? Also why wouldn't people mention previous party policies when we are less than six months into a new government having had 14 years under the previous lot? It's abject nonsense to think that you can only comment on the party in power.

PronounssheRa · 17/12/2024 16:35

No Labour introduced it in 1997 as a universal benefit

At what point do we start assuming responsibility for government decisions lies with the current government?
