Excellent article by Jonny Best describing how a feted theatre director made use of Queer Theory to subvert safeguarding and to promote paedophilia in his work.

And because this man was viewed as positively subversive and anti-capitalist his work was acclaimed rather than condemned for crossing boundaries.

There was shock when a feted theatre director turned out to be a paedophile who collected child rape porn but were the clues there all along?

@biscuitandcake Rousseau wasn't the only influential Enlightenment philosopher, and I thought one of the defining points of this board was that everyone was a free thinker who was perfectly capable of separating the ideas from historical thinkers without cancelling the whole thing - but I'm willing to be corrected!

Oh I definately don't think Rousseau was a bad man therefore the Enlightenment/modern development of liberal values was a shit idea. Just that the shall we say tensions were always there and always will be. And, as people like Wolstonecroft pointed out, there was always a blind spot towards women's rights. Early feminist thought sort of emerged from those movements but it really had to fight to be included and in some ways was a reaction to the negative aspects of changes to society/technology/philosophical beliefs. And every wave of feminism since has been as well.

Godwin's another person who wasn't actually a bad man but whose own ideas of how men/women should behave and the institution of marriage really didn't apply to his own daughter (to her surprise).
