'KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada has issued a new directive barring women from attending medical and semi-professional institutes, effectively cutting off one of the last avenues for higher education available to women in the country, sources confirmed on Monday.
Sources said that Akhundzada’s order was communicated on Monday by the Taliban minister of public health during a meeting with the heads of medical institutes in Kabul.
“Girls will no longer be allowed to study at these institutions,” one source reported, citing remarks made at the meeting.

This decision marks yet another severe restriction on women’s education in Afghanistan. Following the closure of universities to women in December 2022, many had turned to medical institutes as their only option for continuing studies. Now, with this latest directive, even that path has been closed.
Women in Afghanistan have been barred from attending secondary schools for more than three years, and this ban effectively eliminates their opportunities for professional training in healthcare, a sector critically under-resourced in the country.
Afghanistan faces a dire shortage of medical professionals, particularly female doctors, nurses, and midwives needed to provide essential services to women. Experts warn that the ban will exacerbate an already fragile healthcare system, leaving countless Afghan women without access to adequate care.'

Not much in the news as yet. I don't recognise these sources, hopefully will get confirmation on other sites soon.

It was all over radio 4 lunchtime news. It's dreadful. I don't know how I / we can help them.

ArabellaScott · 03/12/2024 15:12

No. Maybe not supporting the Afghan sporting teams playing internationally, but it seems such a weak response.

Even more important than Afghan women’s access to education, is their access to healthcare, which will surely decline to zero in these circumstances?

Even in the strictest Taliban society, surely women play an essential role. How will they manage if a large proportion of them die?

neverthmore · 03/12/2024 15:19

Yes, they were saying on the news that Afghanistan has terrible maternal death rates already and these will only get worse as the supply of midwives decreases.

murasaki · 03/12/2024 15:29

How do they square that with women not being allowed to talk to men vis a vis getting health care?

'Midwifery and nursing are also one of the only careers women can pursue under the Taliban government's restrictions on women - a vital one, as male medics are not allowed to treat women unless a male guardian is present.'

A group of women dressed in black, their hair and faces covered, walk along a path with a white flag with Arabic text on it in the foreground. The trees are autumnal.

They know exactly what they're doing. Their own daughters will suffer and die, yet they view women's lives so cheaply they ultimately don't care.

MMOC · 03/12/2024 15:37

It’s been happening ever since Taliban took charge.
We royally messed up here.
Should never have invaded in the first place but to just pull out of the country, knowing that women’s lives would be ruined is diabolical.

murasaki · 03/12/2024 15:37

Well if all the women die, there won't be any new men coming through to join their bastard club. They seem to have forgotten that.

If only there was space to give all Afghan women asylum .

EvelynBeatrice · 03/12/2024 15:38

I doubt their own wives will die. They’re likely to be like other dictatorships with the elite securing good medical care to safeguard potential sons.
There was a puff piece in one of the newspaper supplements last week about beautiful houses for sale in Kabul. The agent interviewed said the wives ( of the rich ) always come.

We had to withdraw.
Trump pulled his out so we had to go too.

A few female Afghan medics were able to come to Scotland a couple of years ago to complete their training. Is that programme still going? I would be happy to support. Can't find the name of the scheme.

It was arranged via the Linda Norgrove Foundation.

Trump negotiated it, had many joly meetings with the Taliban and set everything in motion with a deadline of 01/05/21.
Biden became president less than 4 months before this date. He had to follow through.

This is a lovely thing to support - but ultimately, it’s propping up the Taliban regime. It would be better for the women to be able to leave and never go back!

Circumferences · 03/12/2024 15:59

I read a story about a girl in Afghanistan torn apart in public by her hair and limbs, by men, because she said she wanted to leave to become a teacher.

I'm traumatized by what's going on there.

Never forget, this is what we are all up against if we give Patriarchy an inch. Men are animals.

Circumferences · 03/12/2024 16:01

Woman in Afghanistan are set on fire and burned alive in front of their fathers and brothers.

Sorry.

I should stop reading about it. My posts are probably quite upsetting.

Oh right, thank you. FFS, Trump is an absolute tool 🤦‍♀️

Biden managed to get an extension to August but they wanted them gone ASAP. The Taliban were increasing their attacks on the ANP, allied forces including us were also winding down based on the withdrawal timetable.
There's a very interesting programme on BBC about the withdrawal, highly recommended.

Thank you, will definitely check it out. Poor Biden, start of a new job and has to be the face of that news.

I've nothing to add except to say that the photo of those lovely, happy, smiling young women that accompanies @ArabellaScott 's post at 15.47 has absolutely broken my heart.
I want to put my arms around them, and all women and girls there, and whisk them away from all the horror they are forced to suffer.

Don’t blame America. If it couldn’t socially engineer Afghan society in 20 years, what hope was there?

It was like this before American intervention and is just returning to their default.

Sobering reminder to protect our free societies from this sort of degeneracy
