'KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada has issued a new directive barring women from attending medical and semi-professional institutes, effectively cutting off one of the last avenues for higher education available to women in the country, sources confirmed on Monday.
Sources said that Akhundzada’s order was communicated on Monday by the Taliban minister of public health during a meeting with the heads of medical institutes in Kabul.
“Girls will no longer be allowed to study at these institutions,” one source reported, citing remarks made at the meeting.

This decision marks yet another severe restriction on women’s education in Afghanistan. Following the closure of universities to women in December 2022, many had turned to medical institutes as their only option for continuing studies. Now, with this latest directive, even that path has been closed.
Women in Afghanistan have been barred from attending secondary schools for more than three years, and this ban effectively eliminates their opportunities for professional training in healthcare, a sector critically under-resourced in the country.
Afghanistan faces a dire shortage of medical professionals, particularly female doctors, nurses, and midwives needed to provide essential services to women. Experts warn that the ban will exacerbate an already fragile healthcare system, leaving countless Afghan women without access to adequate care.'

This is so horrific. Those evil people seem to want to spread hate everywhere. How do they belive that doing such things is in anyone's interest. Utterly depressing. All those women and girls who will suffer. Awful.

They know exactly what they're doing. Their own daughters will suffer and die, yet they view women's lives so cheaply they ultimately don't care.

They'll care in the future when there aren't enough women left to marry and produce more sons! You'd think they'd think of that possibility! Hmm

Trump negotiated it, had many joly meetings with the Taliban and set everything in motion with a deadline of 01/05/21.
Biden became president less than 4 months before this date. He had to follow through.

The Taliban were not the government of Afghanistan. Any agreement was not with the recognised government of Afghanistan. Nobody had to follow that through. Who gives a sh*t about the impact on women and children. A very much known, known.

EasternStandard · 03/12/2024 18:11

Horrendous. Unbearable to read

@RingoJuice makes a good point

What would you have done @ToBeOrNotToBee? Do you mean leave US troops there indefinitely / decades more?

No. Maybe not supporting the Afghan sporting teams playing internationally, but it seems such a weak response.

The Taliban will care about international sport Taliban do not like sport .last time when they were in power they banned cricket All Afghanistan teams live abroad

IwantToRetire · 03/12/2024 18:17

This is on the thread about taking action to support women in Afghanistan https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5215091-afghanistan-campaign-womens-rights-network-nototaliban-at-wrnafghanistan

So this is something to maybe get involved in.

This is a lovely thing to support - but ultimately, it’s propping up the Taliban regime. It would be better for the women to be able to leave and never go back!

Genuinely, can they not be granted asylum? There's no question that they face torture and death if they return.

Nikitaspearlearring · 03/12/2024 19:26

On Radio 4 today they interviewed a brave woman who is continuing to teach young female medical students in Afghanistan in secret. Until recently, the only studies available to women were nursing and midwifery, and now that chance has been taken away, even from the ones who were about to graduate. They've been told not to attend their courses any longer. The UN have estimated there are 18000 nurses and midwives needed, and around 17000 were in training. The interviewer asked what will happen to women in childbirth, and the answer is that they will give birth at home, without medical help. So there are some areas now without medical help for women - no check ups, etc, in a country with one of the highest maternal death rates in the world. The interviewee said that lots of her male relatives were against this new decree.
It really makes my blood boil that the world just stands by and let's them do this to their (female) citizens.

ArabellaScott · 03/12/2024 19:30

I'm wondering how long the Taliban will last. Surely the resistance within Afghanistan will come at some point?

I don’t think it will. Male dominance is a thing and although they may sympathise I don’t see many men wanting to fight for the rights of their women 🤷‍♀️

EasternStandard · 03/12/2024 19:34

The army were left with weapons and had training, I think, although haven't googled

If there was to be resistance it would have made more sense when they had more tools to do it

murasaki · 03/12/2024 15:37

Well if all the women die, there won't be any new men coming through to join their bastard club. They seem to have forgotten that.

If only there was space to give all Afghan women asylum .

I thought the same. There won't be any Taliban when the birth rate drops. I'd have thought they wanted fresh recruits.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 03/12/2024 19:51

It feels completely hopeless doesn't it? I saw some of these brave young women protesting on the news earlier. But none of the men in power are listening or even care.

Waitwhat23 · 03/12/2024 19:53

It's such a horrific situation that it's hard to know even what to say.

Lalgarh · 04/12/2024 07:31

Well someone's making money there. This article on AP is rather jaw dropping in how glibly it treats the issue

He said most customers bring their wives along to viewings. That’s because it’s women who call the shots when it comes to real estate purchases — even in a nation that critics say oppresses and disempowers women. “The power and authority of the house is in the hands of the women,” Haqdoost said. “They decide whether to buy the house or not.”

Thanks to peace, two unexpected words are echoing across Afghanistan's capital: Luxury housing

Afghans who spent years overseas are returning home, keen to take advantage of the country’s improved security.

Even more important than Afghan women’s access to education, is their access to healthcare, which will surely decline to zero in these circumstances?

Even in the strictest Taliban society, surely women play an essential role. How will they manage if a large proportion of them die?

Afghan refugees I know here claim the top Taliban send their families for medical treatment abroad, and sometimes education as well.

So it’ll only be his wives & daughters dying in childbirth if he chooses not to do that.

The head of the Taliban sent his daughter to the local university when he was exiled in, yes, grubby little Qatar

The Afghan resettlement scheme could be extended to women students.

personally I think we should have offered asylum to every woman in the country, but I don’t think it would be politically feasible unless other countries agree to do it together.

Would need to be a caveat that they CANNOT SPONSOR male relatives.

I agree with this - and also Ringo’s caveat that they cannot sponsor male relatives (which maybe goes against the European Human Rights Convention?). I’m not sure how they could even leave the country though?

Very difficult & might expose them to a lot more danger. At least one judge, who’d given judgement against a few Talib & had been living in hiding, trusted someone to get her out & was tortured to death.

Treaclewell · 05/12/2024 12:38

These men are living as parasites on the default humans, that humans can't live without, but they have forgotten what every successful parasite knows. Don't kill your host.

There is an online women’s university for women in Afghanistan. It can be found on Facebook online women’s university Afghanistan
