This has a thread in the telly bit but it deserves one here too. I watched it based on the 5 star Guardian Review. I didn't know the story. I'd never heard of her. I can't stop thinking about her now and what a bloody shero she is. I don't want to give spoilers but it merits a watch. It deserves awards - a shocking story incredibly well told.

Yes it was excellent documentation of the failings of the CJS to protect her and based on a real story which is on tonight.

TheFutureIs · 07/11/2024 19:17

I've watched the first 2 episodes. She was so let down by the police and CPS. What a remarkable woman! Obviously I know the ending but really looking forward to the next 2 episodes

I was riveted to this. It was so well acted, and I'm really glad that the real Delia Balmer was involved and gave it her seal of approval. It is depressing how little has changed since the 90s in terms of how victims are treated by police and the justice system. I nearly threw my cup at the tv when John Sweeny's barrister tried to suggest that, rather than having been tied up and raped for 4 days, she consented to it because she liked a bit of rough sex and masochism. Fucker 😡

YourAmplePlumPoster · 09/11/2024 09:51

Just started watching it. I'd never heard of this story maybe because I wasn't living in the UK at the time.

Fabulous tv

Oblomov24 · 09/11/2024 10:21

Watched episode 1. It's so creepy, it's well done. You know it's gonna turn bad, from the off.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 09/11/2024 13:17

Unbelievable he got bail 😢😫

Betty91 · 09/11/2024 13:45

Have just finished it. She was treated so appallingly.

1apenny2apenny · 09/11/2024 14:17

Binged this last night, had never heard of her either. Poor poor woman, so badly treated but so courageous. Unfortunately we know this continues to happen 😟.

Anna Maxwell Martin is excellent, as is Shaun Evans.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/11/2024 15:14

Watched all of it yesterday, absolutely loved it. Anna Maxwell Martin was just unbelievable.

What I particularly loved about it was how she was not 'the perfect victim' instead she was a real fucking victim utterly understandably traumatised. I just loved how real she was.

Honestly, she should win a bafta for that performance.

She's one of my favourite actresses, I saw her in the Constituent a few months ago at the Old Vic. Just incredible.

Fully agree on all points. She deserves all the awards for the performance.

I can understand why she was so angry but as a survivor myself I would have been glad for that level of support from the police. It was the court system that let her down by giving him bail.

The level of support from the police that would have involved her moving to a hostel in Kings Cross amongst druggies and criminals where she would be safe?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 10/11/2024 13:33

Better than staying in her flat where she was a sitting target.

JenniferBooth · 10/11/2024 14:41

Better than staying in her flat where she was a sitting target.

You do realise domestic abusers are in those hostels as well.
"just move" is the fucking answer to everything in this country.
Being abused................just move
Cant afford to live in your home town...............just move (but you WILL be expected to care for your elderly parents despite having to move miles away)
Housing association moves in a druggie or criminial next door...............just move.

And she wouldnt have been a sitting target had she been allowed to go to Texas and see family that Christmas

MrsOvertonsWindow · 10/11/2024 22:25

Thank you OP. I've watched this today - tough viewing but what a great complex performance by Anna Maxwell Martin.
I do hope that Delia Balmer is "pleased" *for want of a better phrase) with how her ordeal was portrayed.

boysmuminherts · 10/11/2024 22:27

So good. I also saw Anna Maxwell-Martin in The Constituent.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 11/11/2024 12:47

I've been in her situation and I moved countries, thats how bad it was. The truth is unless you have a bodyguard, if they want to kill you they will.

I hope you're now safe @YourAmplePlumPoster ?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 11/11/2024 17:13

Yes thank you. It was a long time ago in the bad old days when the police didnt take it seriously. He died in 2014 and I moved back here in 2002.

I've watched this too - also narrated by Anna Maxwell Martin.

Late to the thread but just watched it and Delia is my new hero. Omg how let down was she by the law. How brave was she.

What saddened me even more is that nothing has really changed from the 90's/20's in terms of supporting victims. Disgusting. Where are the lessons learnt in terms of supporting and understanding victims of male violence?
