NB not checked story, only source DM

The Department of Health and Social Care has this month updated the forms that must be submitted following the tragic loss of a young person.

The paperwork asks: 'Which gender did the child identify as at the time of death?'

It includes the categories 'male (including trans male)', 'female (including trans female)' and 'non-binary'.

As recently as July the form simply listed 'male', 'female', 'other' and 'unknown' under the 'sex' category.

Perhaps a bereaved parent might wish to respect the wishes / pronouns of their dead child?

Perhaps this data will be collected and serve some purpose. Perhaps the DM are stirring up drama!!

Does the form also still include a question asking the sex?

The dead child in question is/was an infant and either a neonatal death before 24 weeks or a stillbirth, or a miscarriage - so how does this added category respect the wishes of the parents' child? Such wishes cannot be known - the child died at or near birth, so non-oral, cannot speak.
And government records should record facts, not someone's airy-fairy wishes, anyway. Sex of neonates who are stillborn, die soon after birth is important. Assume form asks actual sex?
Sorry, misread actual question. Even so, parents being asked about the gender of their child is insensitive and if it does include children who die before they speak, then it's nonsensical.

Wouldn't this be useful to identify if there really are higher death/suicide rates amount trans communities? As long as sex data is still collected or shouldn't be an issue?

No, because it's entirely subjective and is not being collected in an organised manner, either.

Facts for those who are too busy getting a rage on to read or understand:

  • the form is for use of the panel who assess the causes of the death of a child
  • the gender item is for 10 years and over
  • the panels meet after a child death and use the information to help prevent or reduce child death
  • parents are not usually invited to the panel meetings and may not even be aware one has taken place

If any of you actually give a shit about the feelings of bereaved parents you’d stop picking over this for ghoulish entertainment and spectacularly off the mark assumptions about what those parents go through.

This thread is the absolute pits of what GC brings to the table - seizing on one tiny detail of an obscure 9 page governmental form and frothing it up to make a drama of crisis proportions, whilst throwing actual humans on this board under the bus like they’re not even here.

You have no fucking clue what it’s like to have the death of your child scrutinised - lucky you - but god forbid you listen to someone who has!

if you actually want to advocate for a better experience for bereaved parents, go read the bereaved parents board and start understanding what matters, and what would help them - like counselling, sibling support, benefits, coroner training, paediatric space for parents to stay with their child and a shit ton more.

You've not read the thread if you think anyone here has anything other than sympathy for bereaved parents.

Doesnt stop us being able to question the wordings on government forms.
