Can a man lower his car insurance premiums by saying he’s a woman? If not why not?

Quite the cash saving if you can…

Women don't get reduced car premiums any more. I'm sure if they could then trans identified men would absolutely try to get reduced car premiums.

Mt563 · 15/10/2024 22:30

No, because they stopped gender based reductions years ago

ThisBluntPlumDreamer · 15/10/2024 22:39

Insurance companies can no longer take sex into account, but women still pay much less on average - even more so than before. This is because insurers instead use risk indicators like occupation, type of car, address, and claims history - and men are much more likely to be in the riskier category on all of these.

So there would be no advantage to a man pretending to be a woman, but moving to Northern Ireland, changing jobs to be a nursery teacher, and buying a Fiat Panda would be a big money saver.

You would think if you wanted to post something transphobic you would at least check the facts first.

Especially as there are far better actual events that show men are doing similar in order to benefit themselves, for example:

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/03/05/spanish-soldiers-change-gender-benefits-for-women/

Spanish soldiers change gender to gain benefits intended for women

Self-ID law was introduced at same time as benefits were boosted to make careers in military and security forces more attractive to women

Women don’t have cocks. How about that?

I stand corrected. I even worked for the big UK one for years.

playfully I could always identify as a different age (no I can’t)

"I avoid reading things I might disagree with" is not quite the killer rebuttal it might have sounded in your head.

In any case, here's a Le Monde article for you instead that I trust you can stand to have in your otherwise entirely pure browser history.

I avoid reading rightwing bullshit that is behind a paywall, yes.

Discernment is an important skill in life, try it.

Stretchedresources · 16/10/2024 07:06

They don't base insurance on sex anymore sadly. My DS was surprised about this as he knows men are more likely to drive like idiots.

I find that reading from a wide range of sources - both left and right - helps me keep an open mind.

Ah but, some people can’t read an article from any source and work out that if there is any doubt about the veracity of the information, they can check other sources, or even work out what could be true or unlikely just from reading. Whatever the source.

So you'd read The Telegraph if it was free? What taste and discernment!

BlackOrangeFrog · 16/10/2024 07:40

Ha ha reading the Le Mondeo article, it raher implies that there are some trans people saying that some people aren't "genuinely" trans
.. except it's self ID, so... They can't police it, and say "well this man is actually a woman because he says he is, but that man isn't a woman because he says he is, because we can't have people just saying they're women to get something they want... can we... Because well, then... It means that... wait that man .... Oh fuck"

I think so too, otherwise you're just in an echo chamber. It's good to read and consider things outside of a narrow remit.

The fact that people no longer do this is a real problem. We live in echo chambers where algorithms feed us information which is incredibly narrow in focus.

I couldn't agree more, and I do think that this close minded approach is increasing and is problematic. There's a lack of broader consideration; it's just shutting things down.

Well it turns out that the man many thought was proving a point as the hairy version of Mulvaney, was doing just that. Josh Seiter.

‘A guy pretended to be a “transwoman” for 6 months to show people how ridiculous it is that anyone would think a man can be a woman at all.’

‘If you’re still not convinced, think of it this way: would you have supported him going into a woman only space last week but not this week?’

Goes back to a major EU rule change a couple of decades (?) ago which also outlawed higher pension and private health insurance premiums for women so overall it's a mixed bag. And as a pp says there are proxy factors being used.

mitogoshigg · 16/10/2024 07:55

The reverse is it that my dd was quote a huge amount because she does a "mans" job and works away, thankfully there's a specialist broker that got a better rate (1/3 of admirals quote) we are talking about £650 as a student, £2000 because she had graduated, same car, same home address!

I absolutely agree.
I think it's also impacting general knowledge and knowledge of current affairs. People used to read newspapers which meant reading a range of topics because they were there.....now it's just whatever pops up on your feed or whatever you specifically seek out.
I find it really worrying.
