Mermaids, Barclays' Mumsnet Boycott, Jeffrey Epstein... Malcolm does a deep dive

Malcolm Clark has done his usual excellent job of researching the murky connections between the TRAs and those in positions of power.

open.substack.com/pub/malcolmrichardclark/p/jeffrey-epsteins-mermaids-connection?

The senior executive who signed off on the Bank’s alliance with Mermaids- which led to its advertising block on MN - was a mate of Jeffrey Epstein.

The bank has now attempted to scrub all mentions of Mermaids from its web presence- not entirely successfully.

Dodgy bloke in position of power, same old, same old...

Wow.

GailBlancheViola · 10/10/2024 09:08

Wow indeed. How the pieces fall into place.

Barclays boycotting MN and Miners boycotting Barclays.

But why don’t all these connections surprise us anymore?

biscuitandcake · 10/10/2024 09:26

I know that men who proudly describe themselves as "male feminists" are often not all they seem. But increasingly, I think men at the other end of the scale, who are genuinely enraged/perturbed at women with different opinions to them meeting to discuss things are also dodgy as fuck. I know the reason for the Barclays boycott was Mermaids/Mumsnet discussions on trans issues, but there is a level of anger reserved for Mumsnet which doesn't exist for other sites I think because it is mostly women. Outside of the trans issue there's a difference between those that just wouldn't want to go on Mumsnet/to a feminist meeting etc and those who act like the existence of those groups prove women are plotting to remove their rights.

I used to buy into the more traditional feminist view that its because men don't want women talking because they want to control them. But I think its literally that dodgy men feel on an instinctive level that women talking are a potential threat to them/people they sympathise with so have to shut it down/infiltrate it.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 10/10/2024 09:38

That is jaw-dropping. And also not a surprise.
We can add it to the depressingly long list of institutions who should have known better, and put protecting their reputations above the safety of children.

Yep.

Oh.

Blimey.

Yep.

And the counter to that - I think a lot of women pick up instinctively when something is dodgy.

Oh no…. We are not miners!! MNers!!

ArabellaScott · 10/10/2024 09:52

I hope MNHQ ar e made aware of this.

And may consider who they listen to when their own users, mothers and feminists, warn them about certain groups, that we are doing so out of concern for safeguarding.

And maybe they should consider who constantly attacks women and feminists and why.

Boiledbeetle · 10/10/2024 10:25

I cannot think why Barclays might be scrubbing any mention of their connection to Mermaids. That fine upstanding charity that employed Darren Mew as their digital engagements officer

100%

MNHQ might not always make the decisions we'd want or agree with. But I always make it a point to remember that without MN, we'd be in very serious trouble in the UK.

Gosh what a lot of these connections seem to be appearing.

Sometimes things seem quite baffling and opaque and mysterious. And then you read this kind of thing and it all falls into place with a sort of sickly clunk.

DirtyDuchess · 10/10/2024 10:37

This is what I've (we've) been waiting for. It's driven me up the wall not knowing who is at the top pushing this dangerous shit. The more they are exposed the quicker we can bring them down. Bravo Malcolm

ArabellaScott · 10/10/2024 10:37

How long has the Charity Commission investigation been going on, now?

This. MN has been invaluable.

GailBlancheViola · 10/10/2024 10:39

Barclays who did business with and in South Africa during apartheid has/had a high ranking executive with connections to paedophile Epstein and supported a charity that employed questionable people. Well colour me shocked.

ArabellaScott · 10/10/2024 09:50

absolutely - which is why they are working so hard to undermine our instincts and tell us we're "transphobic".

OP posts:
ArabellaScott · 10/10/2024 11:02

I wonder if there comes a point where making accusations of 'transphobia' is itself a useful piece of information.

Not about the subject it's directed at, but about the person making the accusation.

Not to deny that transphobia exists; of course it does. But unfortunately the term has been 'weaponised' as they say and is often used with no evidence or reason other than to try and shut people up.

ArabellaScott · 10/10/2024 11:04

Because of course it's not about 'trans' people. It's about silencing people and controlling people, and using some of the discourse around 'gender' to do that.

Gender ideology harms people who call themselves 'trans' as much as if not more than those who don't.

Power, sex, and money. Always.

What was the deal with Darren Mew? I know there was something (involving that rather haunting image) but I cant find the thread on him. And google is just positive results.
