The best piece of journalism I've read in a long time, on why we need the awkward squad, like KJK.

why I read the FT

That's a very fine piece.

Excellent article thanks @Sausagenbacon 👍

Interesting. But have we reached peak 'woke'? In terms of gender ideology versus the biology of sex. I think gender is getting settled in for the long haul and not at a level I'm comfortable with. There's a risk everyone will start relaxing thinking sanity is coming back into the room whereas now is when we need to push back as hard as we can so if you can, check your local school's policies, email your MP, contribute to crowdfunders because this isn't going away on its own.

I'd characterise it as "woke" having plateaued and maybe (slightly) in decline. Going back to, say, 2018, there was no limit to how far activists were pushing their ideas and there wasn't any real resistance in the mainstream. But now there are mainstream voices saying "no, that's too much".

Now, there might be a long term war to try to define what's acceptable and what's not, so I'm not expecting rationality to sweep the board for quite some time.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 05/10/2024 17:33

I don't want "woke" to go away. The insight that society's norms are actually strongly biased in favour of some and against others is important.

I just want people to think more critically about the causes they fight for, what they really mean and how they are fighting for them, and more openmindedly about the people who oppose them and where they might be coming from.

And for gender, whatever it is, to be respected and interrogated properly as something entirely separate from both sex and sexuality, even if it has historic connections to both, and for genderists to stop trying to force their very specific ideas about how men and women should feel, think, behave and dress onto the rest of us who were quite happily moving away from all that.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 05/10/2024 17:33

FT, BTW, is usually pretty genderist.

Sausagenbacon · 05/10/2024 17:42

Yes, I know it is.

Brilliant read, thanks for sharing.

The liberals are liberal until you have a different opinion from them. Then you realise very quickly they’re aren’t actually liberal at all…

This. People might be fed up with woke but that doesn't mean they're motivated to actually reverse the damage. There's a danger that woke will get a rap over the knuckles and then just carry on in a more covert manner.

Absolutely this. And I say that as someone who has almost always been on the same side as them until now.

I've read the FT for most of my life. I get my information from a variety of sources of course, but IMHO the FT is an absolute powerhouse.

Here's another reason to read the FT, this is their most read article of 2020. This is a summary of a six month investigation into Mindgeek led by two female journalists supported by the FT editor (also female), essentially they followed the money, exposed the business from top to bottom, and traced the history of internet pornography:

FT fan here 🩷. I'll evangelise to anyone who'll listen about how it's well worth reading!

Sausagenbacon · 06/10/2024 08:25

It makes me think of pre-election, when posters on here were telling us to not criticise Labour's stance on Gender, because Labour had our best interests at heart, and there were more important things going on.
Said posters seem to have mysteriously disappeared, post election.

Good article, but where does it say anything about KJK? We need dimwitted fascist enablers - GC or otherwise - like a hole in the head.

Sausagenbacon · 06/10/2024 08:52

I think he's talking exactly about people like KJK.
And your remarks about her exactly prove his point.

Yes, as ably demonstrated by the post a couple above mine

humans are human. All of us. Even the ones with ‘good’ opinions.
