New sculpture on the 4th plinth. It’s never been clearer that these are the faces of biological men. You see the bone structure, the brow bone, the jaw. Not hidden under make-up, filters or long hair.

Thank you to the artist for showing us the real face

Trafalgar Square sculpture features transgender and non binary people

Hundreds of plaster face casts of transgender , non binary and gender non-conforming people which will disintegrate over time have gone on display on Trafalgar Square's famed fourth plinth.

Have they treated the plaster at all?

Won't it all start disintegrating after the first couple of frosts.

I have a bad feeling the BBC news page will be full of updates about the deterioration.

I have a hazy recollection that this cost upwards of £250k.

A couple of days of heavy rain and hailstones mixed in with those frosts and it may not be there by new year!

I hope they keep a space clear round the base. Some poor, unsuspecting sod might get hit by a chunk.

Over the next 18 months, the faces will be naturally weathered by the wind and rain and fade away, leaving a 'kind of anti-monument', the artist previously told The Guardian.

Is the fading away an expression of the way the fad is going... one could only hope.

That was pretty much my thought- fading away through the weather- that's an apt analogy for this idealogy in the sunlight.

MeAgainAndAgain · 18/09/2024 19:11

It says in the article, ‘And in 2009 she invited the relatives of victims who had been killed in gang violence in Juarez to mop the floor of the palazzo at the Venice International Art Exhibition with water that she had poured blood from murder sites into.’

This is awful. Really really weird.

LunaNorth · 18/09/2024 19:26

Ffs. They won’t be happy until there’s a massive trans statue the size of Christ the Redeemer on every bloody High St.

The attention. Always with the attention.

It took me several attempts to grasp the concept the first time I read it.
If I remember correctly I thought- how very sad for those transwomen, from South America where their lives are so very dangerous, but why Trafalgar Square?
Then I realised they hadn’t died, so not a memorial at all.
Then I read about the gruesome body parts thing.
And am processing my surprise that this was a woman of the kind that suffers miscarriage, and does good, useful work with dead people- but now does this kind of thing instead.

Lots to process.

Isn't the artist a transwoman?

MrsWhattery · 18/09/2024 20:59

Aside from the main argument... 'transgender, non binary and gender non-conforming people' always annoys me!

Why do they lump GNC people in with trans and NB people? Trans and NB people are gender-conforming, not non-conforming. Not fitting the gender stereotype of e.g. a woman, they decide they're not a woman and have to be in a different box. TW generally adopt ridiculously insulting and exaggerated stereotypes of femininity.

Surely you can only view trans people as GNC if you think of them as their actual sex? I've never understood why they claim to be GNC as that basically would mean they accept their sex.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/09/2024 21:04

Weirdly, there are masculine males and feminine females who call themselves "gender non conforming" trans people, "butch trans lesbians" etc.

So just faces of people whose biological sex is quite clear then 🤷🏻‍♀️

Haha

You won that one fair and square 🤣

I'd be happy to see a Larry the Cat statue up there when the time comes!

Oh thank god you said this, my mind went straight to taxidermy at @viques post!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/09/2024 21:10

Is this artist male? Not seen anything stating that, I thought female.

MrsWhattery · 18/09/2024 21:12

Yes it's a bit unfortunate as a supposed tribute to trans people. Without their gender-identity-affirming accoutrements, they're just a bunch of biological realities. You'd get the same effect making masks of the population of your local pub on a friday night. If I was a TRA I'd be a bit put out.

HellonHeels · 18/09/2024 21:21

Remember when the 4th plinth had real live people on it, doing various things and members of the public went along to heckle?

Why not have another go at that and feature trans and nb people doing stuff? That would be much better!

OhMaria2 · 18/09/2024 21:24

Has anybody said Transfalgar Square yet, or am I late to the party?

Agree. Trans and nb are uncomfortable with their sex, whereas gnc accept theirs. You don't need to believe in any weird ideology to be gnc

Women aren't morally better or worse than men, men just have more power and opportunities to express/indulge/inflict their selfish urges onto other people.

Making offensive/proactive art is a gender neutral talent.

But like any other art (like any other cultural prouct really) men simply have more opportunities to make provocative art, and get bigger audiences and more credibility when they do. Doesn't mean women don't do it, just means you don't hear as much about them.

That is why genderism is such bollocks. The physical differences between us, they ones they reject, are real. The mental and social differences, the ones they reify, are mostly just the outcomes of the different ways society reacts to our sex.

My comma action was inadequate, sorry.
I was surprised this was a woman of the gynaecological kind, and that she’d previously had a gritty real useful job and was now doing this rubbish.
I didn’t intend to say ‘woman of the kind that does useful stuff’.

Biscofffan · 18/09/2024 22:34

Not worth dignifying with a comment. Ignore.

KnittedCardi · 18/09/2024 22:43

Know what? I don't really care what it is supposed to represent, it's a shit sculpture, by a weird person, who isn't British, the sculpture had nothing to do with with London, or Britain. Why is it front and center in London. Why was it chosen ( rhetorical question, we all know why), by whom, and I effing hope nobody actually paid for it, especially as it will disintegrate.... What total and utter crap.

Dominoodles · 18/09/2024 22:52

I'm just wondering how much this cost, only for it to look pretty visually unappealing and for it to disintegrate within 18 months. Art is subjective but public, outdoor art also needs to be practical.

crumpet · 18/09/2024 22:54

It reminds me of the American embassy

This is a dire piece of "art".
