French village of Mazan torn apart by horror of mass rape trial - BBC News

I'm not really surprised but seriously, how on earth can anyone of any influence say something quite this stupid?

"“She’ll have trouble getting back on her feet again for sure,” he agreed, but suggested her rapes were less troubling than those of another victim in the nearby town of Carpentras who “was conscious when she was raped… and will carry the physical and mental trauma for a long time, which is even more serious”."

“People here say ‘no one was killed’. It would have been much worse if [Pelicot] had killed his wife. But that didn’t happen in this case,” Bonnet said"

WTF? Bloody men 🤯

PriOn1 · 18/09/2024 15:56

Interesting article. The local women are afraid and the men are minimizing. Can you imagine minimizing something so appalling? Misogyny is out of hand in so many places I’m finding it hard to take.

RaspberryParade · 18/09/2024 16:00

'Fun' fact, the town of Marzan is where the Marquis De Sades family had a chateaux.if I was a woman there I would do my best to relocate after this atrocity.
As to the butcher...

Imagine trying to minimise a woman being knocked unconscious by her HUSBAND. and Systematically raped by 80 different men while in this state???

and implying Gisele doesn't have the same mental trauma because she wasn't 'awake'.

revolting.

Be grateful you’re not dead woman. Nice. I wonder if he’d feel the same if it was a man being systematically drugged and raped?

AstonScrapingsNameChange · 18/09/2024 16:18

JFC my jaw is on the floor!

Does he not think that knowing what happened to her and how her husband betrayed her so badly, despite not being conscious for it, will leave any trauma?

Is he for real?

It's just astonishing how anyone would try to minimise this grim incident. It's all a bit 'but our town is so nice' - smacks of denial.

Basically all he cares about is how people view his town.

He doesn't care about her or her trauma at all.

Sadly he is for real and i don't think he's alone in thinking these things. I've had many men i've interacted with in disbelief when i say how traumatic experiences like this are for women....

Exactly. Mentioning a rape in a different town, like an attempt to distract: ‘Look over there!’

Basically when men do depraved things that cause great harm, it’s terrifying for women but just an inconvenience for men cause it makes them look bad.

Yep, the worst thing about male violence is that it makes men look bad 🙄

INeedAPensieve · 18/09/2024 17:01

Hmmm. I'm now questioning why he keeps minimising it (apart from his obvious misogyny). Maybe the mayor was one of them eh? Seems such a large sample of rapists from a small area that took part in this crime. They've still not identified at least 30 of them. These men still walk free despite their crimes.

Anastomosisrex · 18/09/2024 17:02

He is voicing what is so often expressed by misogynists of the worst sort: that the issue is not that the woman was appallingly abused by men, but that she's made a fuss about it and now her abusers look bad and men are going to be inconvenienced.

And to this day, when she interacts with her neighbours, or passes someone on the street, it's plausible that GP will be thinking, "Did he? Was he one of them? Was he invited, declined, but didn't report?"

The lack of basic humanity, far less understanding of GP's experience is truly breathtaking.

If I lived in that area I'd want Mayor, police chief, mps etc to be a full sweep of women next time there are elections.

Hey, thats true, it does make them look bad.

Oh hold on, could that be because they ARE bad?

Grammarnut · 18/09/2024 17:15

Grades of rape. Honestly, men!

They weren't all locals I think? So basically, wherever you live, don't trust the men.

Boiledbeetle · 18/09/2024 17:19

Wow! Lots of minimising and very little empathy by the male of the species in that article.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/09/2024 17:26

I heard that on the news last night, and was horrified and gobsmacked. I really wish that the women of the world could have some quality time with the Mayor, to explain to him exactly how vile his attitude is. Hopefully he will get punished in the next mayoral election.

Yep, or he knows others who were involved

RaspberryParade · 18/09/2024 17:42

Recommend writing to the the Mayor Denis Le Ralle and explaining to him that millions are now aware of the horror in his town and his reaction to it.

Just a google away is the means to express your views, it would be good if millions of women did.
If we stay silent or only complain here, then thats acceptance.

I'm sure I've read that some of the perpetrators are "too high profile to be prosecuted". I wonder...
