If you check out Gleicon Analha’s Linked-in it’s hysterical, frankly. He has “seen people dying of transphobia attacks” apparently… in Brazil, which is without doubt the country with the highest incidence of death/murder of trans women - about 100 a year (30% of the approx 350 trans women murdered globally each year). These are largely because they are sex workers who are murdered by their pimps and lovers/partners. Ie not ‘transphobic attacks’ at all. This is willful misrepresentation.
Brazil is a sex tourism hotspot and 90% of transvestites/transexuals are engaged in prostitution, and those murdered are almost exclusively sex workers. The majority of these deaths are carried out by punters, partners and pimps and are committed for complex reasons of which direct transphobia is not the main cause (but I would be disingenuous to deny the likelihood that internalised homophobia and unconscious transphobia may be mixed in with the killers’ motivations). Conversely, between 4000-5000 women are killed every year. Of these 40%, as now classified since a new law put ‘femicide’ on the statute books in 2015, are expressly for ‘being a woman’. This figure is also likely understated as there is a likelihood of additional unreported deaths of many undocumented and/or trafficked female sex workers who simply ‘disappear’.
Anyway, just thought that was interesting…
