Bill to amend Sex Discrimination Act Australia not allowed to be heard

In the wake of the Tickle vs Giggle case in Australia a federal senator has attempted to propose a bill to repeal the SDA amendments made in 2013. This would remove any references to gender and restore the definitions of men and women to biologically based, and not gender identity. Unfortunately the bill wasn’t allowed to even be read in Senate after a vote of 32-27 against it.

The senator behind the bill isn’t one I’d normally support. She’s said some awfully racist and horrible things. However she’s the only politician willing to publicly stand up for women’s rights and attempt to change the law. Senator Pauline Hanson. This tweet gives details:

Sall Grover’s take on the objection to the bill:

I agree with your assessment of the Senator, mostly she's difficult to take, from what I've read, she has said some unpalatable things, but on this she's right. The vote was close though, 32 - 27, there maybe a chance that she and others who supported the bill might be able to change minds. Only another 6 to swing it the other way.

FeralWoman · 13/09/2024 13:17

Please have a read of this link, and consider responding to it. Not sure if I can say that on here or not.

I feel like a traitor to my values and political beliefs posting that and supporting Pauline but the rights of women and girls are important. I’m not sure if any other politician is currently brave enough to take action on it but she seems to thrive on controversy.

Unfortunately some of the 6 she’d need to swing are aligned with the federal Labor government. They’re independents but some are colloquially known as the Teals and will vote the same as each other. Others are Greens and they’re very firmly lost to gender ideology.

Rats! so close and yet so far. 😒

Quartz2208 · 13/09/2024 13:29

they only need 3 to swing it to make it 30-29

FeralWoman · 13/09/2024 13:29

There’s been no coverage of it by the MSM. If it wasn’t for Twitter and Sall Grover I wouldn’t have known about it.

Oh right, maths were never my thing. (There are 3 types of people in the world, those that can count and those that can't 😂.)

Maybe 3 will be doable?

FeralWoman · 13/09/2024 15:00

So there’s 76 senators but only 59 were present to vote. That’s 17 who either were absent or deliberately left the chamber to avoid voting.

Thats a five vote difference only!
On a separate note, I'm amazed Pauline Hanson is still going.
And you're right, she is pretty ghastly the Aussie Marie LePenn, so its unfortunate that its her leading the call.
It makes it a left versus right issue like America, when it really isnt.
I hope more Lefties speak up like Sall.

RaspberryParade · 13/09/2024 15:22

Aussie women need to speak out more and en masse.

For some reason Lefties seem sold on gender ideology. The Left has always been misogynist afaik. It's not news that they would support a MRA. The right is also misogynist but somehow attracts women who turn out to be for women (in some ways, not others).
NB Assuming only Aussies can sign petition.

FeralWoman · 13/09/2024 16:20

@RaspberryParade Pauline is like a cockroach or a bad fart. Just when you think you’ve gotten rid of her, she’s back. She’s even done Dancing with the Stars (Strictly in the UK?).

Is Dancing with the Stars bad? You mean she's publicity seeking. But for some reason wants biology put back into the Sex Discrimination Act. Not all bad (even though her reasons for doing this might not be mine!).

DWTS should have stopped about 5 years ago. It used to be great. Yes, she loves publicity. Especially publicity with a pay cheque. I’m waiting for her to appear on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. For whatever reason she wants to restore the SDA to biological reality so we need to embrace that.

She posted a list of the senators who voted against the amendment on Twitter, so we have a handy guide on Who Not To Vote For come the next election.

Isn't it fascinating how this stuff never makes the mainstream media? There wasn't a peep out of them when the SDA was amended in 2013, and there's a similar blanket of silence now. If it wasn't for social media I would have heard nothing about this. No wonder the government is trying to push their "Misinformation and Disinformation" bill through.

I hadn’t even heard of it until I saw your thread!

As for Pauline Hanson, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Any chance of a screenshot of the senators who voted against it, please? Can’t access X at all and would like to know who is against women…

Steph Hodgins-May is the Greens Senator from Victoria who spoke up to object to the bill even being read. For her trans rights are more important than women’s rights.

This sort of thing is why I haven't been able to vote for any of the parties for years. Imagine it taking Pauline Hanson to try for this sort of amendment! Hell, I remember when Howard reluctantly tossed her out of the Coalition and she went on to start One Nation, frequently known as One Notion.

Yes yes thank you I know this canard well.

Yet in the UK it was a 14 year Conservative Party who enabled and encouraged it and its Left Wing feminists who have led the most successful fighback in the world, so frankly Im sick of hearing it.
America isnt the whole world with their neurotic polarisation and their cartoon politics thank fuck, try as hard as they would make it so.
You cannot seriously try and tell me men on the right arent as misogynistic

In the end, its just men, of any persuasion.

NotBadConsidering · 15/09/2024 05:34

Of those who voted No, which was just to hear it read, not even to pass it, 21 are women from left wing parties in Australia.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 15/09/2024 05:47

David Pocock should know better. He used to play rugby union. I feel like sportsmen should understand this and take it more seriously. Sadly, I am clearly wrong.

Why is Claire Chandler’s name on there? She is/was known for supporting women’s rights. And has now massively dropped in my estimation!

James Paterson is another surprise on the list.

What the fuck?!?!

FeralWoman · 15/09/2024 06:06

@DifficultBloodyWoman Claire Chandler voted yes to the bill being read. She’s still on the side of women! She hasn’t gone over to the other side.

Edit to add: Paterson also voted yes. Top list voted yes to hearing the bill, bottom list voted no and stopped it.
