It's Michael Biggs as the expert!

nauticant · 25/09/2024 09:19

They got a woman from ONS on and she wouldn't even accept that with hindsight this was a bad question. Harford is very gently asking her about the question like you would with a small child about a missing biscuit.

LizzieSiddal · 25/09/2024 09:20

Oh “hindsight is a wonderful thing” excuse!

Don't bother mentioning that many people told you there would be an issue!

She sounds like she’s definitely taking the biscuit.

nauticant · 25/09/2024 09:21

Now Harford is on to asking why, once it was evident there was a problem, the ONS didn't own up earlier. Apparently it was a new question and so it took longer for the ONS to decide what to do.

CriticalCondition · 25/09/2024 09:22

ONS still not accepting they had a crap question and Scottish worded it better.

nauticant · 25/09/2024 09:22

It was Mary Gregory from the ONS: https://datasciencecampus.ons.gov.uk/author/mary/

CriticalCondition · 25/09/2024 09:34

Tim Harford put to her, very gently, that the regulator had found the ONS to be very defensive when it became clear they'd got it wrong.

Her response to this was er, very defensive.

newtlover · 25/09/2024 10:37

such a good programme- what the BBC does best

CatDogGuineaPig · 25/09/2024 11:01

That was excellent. Especially the part where he says there's a borough in Southwark (I think) that came out as 2.5% or so saying yes to the question. I cannot believe the ONS response, nothing to do with my viewpoint just that they couldn't admit how shoddy the question was.

This case again brings up the question, yet again, as to how actual statisticians can be so captured (by whom?!) that they put the feeling of “trans community” above facts and statistics.

It’s mind blowing!

Is there someone in the senior leadership of the ONS who has a vested invested in pushing trans ideology?

Aka 'has a massive conflict of interests'.

Harassedevictee · 25/09/2024 11:48

Just listened to the programme. A fair and balanced approach but Mary from ONS just came over as defensive and whataboutery.

What’s the betting the 2031 Census has a question very similar to Scotland’s. .

I think there was, wasn't there? Can't recall exactly but it was discussed on a previous Census thread.

TeenToTwenties · 25/09/2024 11:54

What does 'have a trans history' mean?

Is it 'I am a woman, at one point I was trans and I was born male, but I am not trans I really am a woman'?

Or is it 'I dabbled in non binary as a teen but grew out of it'?

Still seems confusing to me.

Could be anything. Hence the stupidity of the question.

newtlover · 25/09/2024 15:15

yeah its not really much better is it

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/09/2024 15:21

It's generally said IME by middle aged late transitioning males.

If there is a 2031 Census.
