Crossing out 'gender' and writing 'sex' on child's health form

FeelingSad2024 · 05/09/2024 22:04

Had a letter today from our local public health authority about immunisations for my child. In the details section it asked for 'Gender- M or F'. In a small act of rebellion, I crossed out 'gender' and wrote 'sex' above it.

I hate it when public bodies can't even get the distinction between sex and gender. Surely accurate recording of that is important?

Anyway, I am sure someone will read the form and roll their eyes and my card is marked, but it made me feel better.

I think you filled in the application despite the organisation being captured by the alphabet rainbow crew. No? It was all in there on my original post.

I think you don't know what you're talking about, because you weren't there, don't know the organisation involved, and seem to want to pick a fight for some obscure reason. Are you used to churches being captured? I'm not, I have nothing to do with them.

I filled in a form that listed a number of genders. The most appropriate one for me to tick was ciswoman but I don't want to be known as a ciswoman, so I wrote female in the "other" box.

Read this late at night and thought you said " fox" - actually that's a good idea ! 😂
Irritates the hell out of me and am continually correcting !

my point exactly.. when it comes to your children, will the world end if you tick a box saying male or female? they are children... its a form! i doubt who ever sent you it, sees your act of defiance and thinks... well thats it! we must change the wording on our forms now!

there are way more important issues in the world to deal with than a simple tick box on a childs form

Are you aware there are parents who claim their child is a gender different to their sex?

Which issues are more important than your child's healthcare?

When i google a definition of each the result is the same wording. 🤷‍♀️

Yes. And if we all do it, eventually firms will revert back to sex

This didn't use to bother me until recently when this question was asked on an A&E admittance form where asked for gender with three options: male, female or other. No separate section for actual sex. So it seemed clear they were asking for gender identity and actually left open the possibility of recording no helpful data at all with the other category. I mean FFS

Grizzles · 19/09/2024 21:14

As an aside, my predictive text initially changed 'gender identity' to 'gender insanity' there Grin

RitzyMcFee · 19/09/2024 21:19

I always cross it out.

I did one yesterday in a hospital which asked for my child's current gender.

Projectme · 19/09/2024 21:21

I do it too! 🙋‍♀️

Ffs , so petty. Does it really matter?

rhywlodes · 19/09/2024 21:58

I've said this before so sorry if I'm repeating myself, but if I can, I share this link in the free text box that you often get at the end of an online form:

If you look at another thread that's been started on health problems going unchecked, yes, it does

MrsWhattery · 20/09/2024 00:15

I always do this, for myself and my DC. It's a matter of clarity. Gender can now mean anything and might not be your sex. Anything to do with health, it should be clear that you are specifying your sex so I make it clear. People who think their "gender identty" matters more are welcome to go with that. People who just think gender means sex, well I understand that and I hope they get the right treatment.

That's a very helpful link thanks, I've saved it, I'm sure it will be very useful to add into the 'other' box whenever I am asked the question. Particularly the NHS staff survey due at the end of the month!!

If the only option is gender, I always tick other, then write 'my sex is female' in the self description box. Been doing this on all forms for ages

This is what I do.

I work within this field, and if see someone has crossed out gender I’m very happy. I refuse to ask the question if I’m taking consent over the phone. We don’t use that information anyway, it’s pointless to us.

That's excellent and I hadn't seen it! Thanks for sharing; please keep doing so!

Ffs , so petty. Does it really matter?

Yes. Unequivocally yes.

Gender is a social construct, a bunch of abstract nonsense based on stereotypes and used to control people.

Sex is a biological fact, and whilst there are variations in XX/XY even so none of it dictates what you like, what you wear, how you look, how long your hair is, etc etc. Biology is important for all kinds of reasons, self expression matters, but doesn't affect your health or medical treatment options.
