I may have misread this but it appears there is only one nomination?

A sign that this Labour Government is running a tight ship?

Fuck Kate TWAW Osborne would be a mare in that position

IwantToRetire · 05/09/2024 18:16

Can Rosie Duffield not be put forward?

Or is it that there aren't 15 brave enough MPs to nominate her?

I've only just realised exactly who she is. What sort of statement is the Labour Party sending by only allowing her to stand?

The Women and Equalities Minister angrily accused Jarrow MP Kate Osborne of 'lying' about her and fumed at being 'maligned by people making false statements'.

In fiery exchanges during a committee hearing, Ms Badenoch said politicians should be able to disagree on trans issues without worrying about 'triggering people'.

and:

“The vile rhetoric around trans people, doesn’t need to change, it just needs to go away. It’s what people do isn’t it? Divide and conquer, point the finger at the minorities and blame them for everything.”

Yes some women have a penis.
It's clear that Tory allies will help with their #waronwoke
Vilification of trans people to distract from mess country is in.

When the Tory government published guidance for schools on gender-questioning children or those self-identifying as “trans”, the response was telling. With the support of Labour MPs like Kate Osborne, they told schools they could ignore government guidance. advising them on how to legally avoid doing so with Labour signalling that they’d reverse our guidance if they win office.

According to Labour List
Sarah Owen (MP for Luton North) is also standing. Don't know anything about her but fingers crossed she has to better than Kate Osborne.

That's good to know, but really a bit disconcerning that she isn't listed on the page about the process.

All very strange.

From a quick google:

I’ll say it again, if you care about human rights, you don’t get to pick which human’s rights you fight for and which ones you do not. #LGBwiththeT

[Sark] So we can look forward to 5 years of the Women and Equalities Committee holding the Government to account. [/Sark]

IwantToRetire · 07/09/2024 19:54

Have just seen that Sarah Owens is now listed on the Committee web page and that my MP supports her.

And as the closing date is monday it really does seem that Labour, despite weasel words, have no intention in practice of supporting women's sex based rights.

Because this Committee above all others is where women should be able to turn to to get their voices heard.

On one level if it wasn't so preditictable, it would be embarrassing that Labour can be so overtly partisan.

I presume in instances like this, it is the same as having a three line whip.

If we ever had any hope that Labour could act with equality towards women's rights, this shows that they cant and dont want to.

Oh my fucking God.

This is appalling news.

highame · 08/09/2024 09:48

For all our joy at wins in the courts, we only need go back to the days of David Isaac, to see what happens when everyone but women's rights are considered human rights and how far incorrect reading of the law can seriously impact on women. Isaacs found it very easy to ignore the law

highame · 08/09/2024 09:57

Mis-read in my above post. Thought it was EHCR, need more coffee.

Is it going to be any worse than Noakes? Remember Carolyn Harris?
Lots to look forward to.

People should have believed Kier Starmer when he said what he was going to do.

Yep, once again it's going to be the Men With Exciting Pronouns Committee.

Everyone should have believed Labour when they said what they were going to do.

That's Chair of the Health and Social Care Select Committee, not the WESC.

Yes, but just confirms I am right to feel real anger and dispair.

Its like all those we had sort of hoped were just lurking on the sidelines are now all surging forward to be in decision making positions.

And no dissenting voices it would appear - well so far.

ha!!! Sorry Arabella I posted and then had to run

tho tbh I’m equally unhappy to have her as chair of that given how captured health & care services are

Sarah Owen's prospectus:

"This new Parliament is our chance to bring an end to the culture wars. People’s experiences and identities are so much more than a cheap headline."
https://committees.parliament.uk/committee/328/women-and-equalities-committee/news/202694/nominations-open-for-the-women-and-equalities-committee-chair/

I think Osbourne will be worse, but the choice is not great.

It is odd that the more pro-women Labour MPs didn't run a candidate. There is enough of them to get someone on the ballot. They might have got a bunch of Tory backers. Is there something going on behind the scenes? Were they pressured not to cause a scene, by trying to elect someone realistic.

In other news Tonia has been elected chair of the NI select committee unopposed which is great.

ArabellaScott · 10/09/2024 10:15

An end to the culture wars - how? By shutting up anyone who dissents?

ArabellaScott · 10/09/2024 10:16

Although I agree that Owen may be slightly less extreme than Osborne. I cannot imagine how Osborne could feasibly engage with many groups, given how insulting and inflammatory and abusive she has been in the past.
