As we're nearly at the end of the first thread, let's make sure we keep the topic current.

There have been five women now who have spoken to podcasts about the predatory behaviour of Neil Gaiman.

First thread here:

Who is the 'we' who are publishing it?

YellowAsteroid · 11/01/2025 12:00

Quite disturbing to find in the comments that he's in a new relationship

So his wife has finally realised what she’d been inadvertently complicit in?

Oh, they split up quite a while back, I believe.

I don't think she was "inadvertent" at all, tbh. Not from a lot of the stories eg Scarlett's. She was the one who initially put Scarlett into that situation and must have known exactly what the set up was. Sadly, there'll always be women who like to enable men like Gaiman, thinking it makes them 'edgy' in some way. She's not responsible for his choices and behaviour, mind.

Agree.

I can't tell - under their user name there is some Mod Announcement flair so I figured it must be semi-legit.

I tend to agree @hihelenhi but I used that phrasing because I was on the run on my phone & couldn't think of a quicker way to say it, and also because I didn't want to be mistaken for blaming a woman for NG's actions. You put it much better in terns of her not being responsible for his actions.

I did wonder, listening to the podcast, at her role - it sometimes seemed awfully like pimping. But I'm really troubled by the easiness of blaming wives for the crimes of their husbands.

Pleased to hear they've split up.

The mods have added this announcement today - it talks about the coming news and vulnerable members 😬 How much worse can it get than it already is?

Cover of the New York magazine

notathenabutcassandra · 13/01/2025 11:01

Shit sorry. This should have a massive trigger warning. It's making me feel sick reading it.

LilyBartsHatShop · 13/01/2025 11:12

I can't read it either.
That cover.
It's not justice but it's something close.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 13/01/2025 11:46

I have just read it. It's very good, and doesn't pull any punches at all, so caution is needed. Just sharing this beautifully understated line (my bold):

"With one exception, an allegation of forcible kissing from 1986, when Gaiman was in his mid-20s, the stories take place when Gaiman was in his 40s or older, a period in which he lived among the U.S., the U.K., and New Zealand. By then, he had a reputation as an outspoken champion of women. “Gaiman insists on telling the stories of people who are traditionally marginalized, missing, or silenced in literature,” wrote Tara Prescott-Johnson in the essay collection Feminism in the Worlds of Neil Gaiman.^ Although his books abounded with stories of men torturing, raping, and murdering women, this was largely perceived as evidence of his empathy.^"

notathenabutcassandra · 13/01/2025 11:48

Genuinely feel sick to my stomach. Not even those I know in his camp are trying to cling on to false hope anymore.

Just reading now. It's extremely well-written and basically ties together a bunch of the stories we already know about, but with more detail. And crucially, puts his victims at the centre.

He's vile. Absolutely vile, poisonous specimen of a man.

Any of his "it was consensual" supporters can seriously get to fuck at this point, and I hope this will shut them all up. There's really no question. Bye Neil and bye to your whole career. Good riddance.

Missproportionate · 13/01/2025 12:41

just horrific

nauticant · 13/01/2025 13:28

This is why Gaiman didn't provide any kind of response. If he'd put out something self-exonerating then that would have been swept away by what was waiting to come out.

Since there was no way he could have admitted what he'd done, then silence was the only practical way to attempt to control things.

ColourByNumbers88 · 13/01/2025 13:38

Horrific. Whole thing is awful.

Scarlett now in Scotland. I'm not sure I'd want to study at St Andrews where he's got the honorary degree. Good on her for challenging that but shame on the uni for not reviewing. The power of lawyers.

Am sure AP cannot rock the boat whilst trying to get custody/settlement. Clearly she's had huge involvement in the article. Questionable behaviour on her part.

Unprofessional about the NZ counsellor speaking freely about some of his client sessions with a journalist.

And lastly, seems NG is a victim of child abuse himself. Treating his son like that is abhorrent. I don't recall that detail that he was present in the hotel from the podcasts. Thoroughly depressing reading. Very fucked up.

ArabellaScott · 13/01/2025 13:58

After reading that, I hope that Gaiman is not in charge of, or allowed to be alone with, any children.

TiramisuThief · 13/01/2025 14:18

He is a monster. Disgusting and abusive.

Some of the detail is horrific. The incidents in front of his child should be thoroughly investigated. That should be custody ending stuff in a just world.

notathenabutcassandra · 13/01/2025 14:24

Again I'm struck by the courage of Tortoise for bringing this out into the open when no-one else would.

Binglebong · 13/01/2025 14:38

Does anyone have a share token or archived version? I get a "reached my total article message."

BrainFrog · 13/01/2025 14:44

Can someone summarise for me possibly? Not keen on clicking on lots of random links, but was just checking in to see whether this was still rumbling along (but instead it sounds like it's got worse).

I'm supposed to go to a book group about Good Omens soon, but probably won't.

nauticant · 13/01/2025 14:46

People are actively archiving that webpage. Here's one of many archived copies:

Here's a summary from a clearly non-dodgy source:
