We were building a house around the time of the Wickes announcement. Guess where we didn't spend any money? I've not spent a penny there since. Screwfix, Toolstation and B&Q get my custom.

NewGreenDuck · 02/08/2024 15:47

I don't think he understood that insulting your customers is not a good move.

ArtFartGunkel · 02/08/2024 15:53

DH still shops there as it's the closest - however there's something about the ambiance in there that always makes him need a poo. After the Pink News thing I stopped reminding him to go before he leaves. Now every time he comes home and groans about having to use the loo in there I think of Fraser Longden.

sashagabadon · 02/08/2024 15:55

I’m not sure that will Wickes realises that women make most of the “big ticket item” decisions and men generally go along with them for an easy life!

It's a bit Gerald Ratner isn't it? Bosses of these companies never learn that when you insult your customers, those customers tend to then shop elsewhere - such arrogance!
GC women might not be Wickes main source of income but you'd think a company boss would realise that losing any profitable sales is risky - you never know when a col crisis or a pandemic or some other economic disaster is around the corner!

Remember the top man one about it being the place to get a suit for first job interview or court appearance? That went down like a bucket of sick too iirc.

@ABirdsEyeView
That was Dave Shepherd at TM. He was an ok guy actually, unlike most of the other senior management at the time, and since.

ABirdsEyeView · 02/08/2024 17:28

Not tactful though was it?

user6876577657 · 02/08/2024 17:34

I used to use wiles regularly. I now try not to. I did have to go in last week since I needed something urgently and they were the only place with it in stock but their prices are now the highest out of all the diy places too so we won’t do that again, I’ve never known Wickes to cost more than Homebase

CatusFlatus · 02/08/2024 17:35

Their Brighton Pride float was a disgrace last year. Supporting a 'trans inclusive conversion therapy ban'. The CEO posted on LinkedIn about it. I used to work there and it was nauseating to see ex-colleagues who I believed were decent and intelligent people fawning all over it.

irishmurdoch · 02/08/2024 17:40

Oh please share this on Twitter for all the smug TRAs who said Wickes didn't give a f@&k about the terf pound!

They've made all their Kitchen and Bathroom Assistant redundant. I'm one of them and they are really taking tactlessness and rudeness to another level in dealing with the consultancy and redundancy period 😡We've been told that we are the deadwood of the company and the reason why they're struggling financially (apparently 44mil profit just didn't cut it).

It's really disheartening to be effectively discarded with two weeks pay 'enhanced' by 2%

Service is expected to plummet as the designers are going to be overwhelmed with the sheer amount of demands on their time (much of which don't payoff in terms of commission).

Please, if you go in a Wickes store - be nice to the staff - no-one working in the store is gaining from it and they're overwhelmed and worried where the axe will fall next.

Catsmere · 02/08/2024 22:45

So he really made it clear he only wants it to be Dickes.

TrainedByCats · 02/08/2024 23:01

I feel sorry for the people working there like FastFaster who have no say over policy but I’m another former customer who hasn’t set foot in a Wickes store or bought from them online since then.

Meanwhile, B&Q seem to be increasing profit and share….and that’s in exactly the same market and conditions.

On the contrary, my son works at B&Q and unfortunately they're in the same position as Wickes with staff concerned about possible job cuts.

B&Q owner Kingfisher warns of lower profits as DIY market slows

Company’s shares fall as it says it is to reduce costs, which suggests it could cut staff

anyolddinosaur · 03/08/2024 07:20

B&Qs problems stem for it's losses abroad, especially France and Poland. UK like-for-like sales were up by 0.8% but any excuse to cut staff and make bigger profits.

I'll only visit Dickes if it's an essential I cant get elsewhere. Spent quite a bit on DIY this past year and have managed to find alternative suppliers, overall I've saved money too.

BobnLen · 03/08/2024 07:31

I generally just buy from Amazon or Screwfix for DIY stuff, Wickes and B&Q are expensive

They did indeed!

I love the poem!
