Photo shoes full text. I’ve marked the image as “sensitive” just in case. It’s on X here.

I don’t know why these things still surprise me. Why is this kind of rhetoric acceptable, but - for example - referring to male boxers in the women’s Olympic competition is prohibited by IOC guidelines?

It's a horrible sign. I don't think many people would think it's acceptable. I'm not sure what the IOC guidelines have to do with this though.

RoyalCorgi · 29/07/2024 09:56

That thread is quite something. I actually wondered initially whether the account "What the trans?" was a secret gc account designed to make trans activists look bad. But it seems not - they post this stuff in all sincerity.

They also seem a bit thick. The number 410,757,864, 530 is more people than exist in the world.

The IOC have tried to prevent the press from identifying where male athletes compete in women’s sport - because it is harmful to call them male. I find it odd that neutral statements of fact must be restricted in case anyone is upset (“harmed”) - but statements such as that on the sign are apparently fine…

I don't have Twitter / X so can't see the thread. I can imagine what the comments are like though.

Interestingly there are no comments so far!

Yes, I spotted that, about it being greater than the world's population.

They say that 80% of statistics are made up on the spot, or is it 99%?

Well that sign was definitely made by an articulate and mentally stable person who is able to form a coherent thought, oh wait no it wasn't. I hope this person gets the mental health support they so clearly need before they harm themselves or someone else.

They're not exactly the smartest bunch.

But why would that sign be covered by the IOC guidelines? Am I missing something here?

Hopefully that's a good sign!
Do we know where the picture was taken? I wonder if it's even real.

ItsFunToBeAVampire · 29/07/2024 10:09

I just googled that number out of curiosity and this thread came up which says "It's from a bootleg chinese shirt, which strings together nonsense english words in order to sound cool."
So it sounds like (unsurprisingly) very online people making a geeky reference.

At the top of the thread it says Trans Pride London.

It is amusing (or disturbing, depending on how dangerous you think these people are) that this account is presenting the signs that it apparently thinks portrays their cause in a good light - whereas in fact it makes them seem like absolute lunatics.

I’m not suggesting the sign should be!

I am simply lamenting the fact that statements (in any context - see eg BBC reporting of crimes by trans women where they fall over themselves not to mention sex) of neutral fact that may upset (“harm”) this group of people are effectively censored. And yet statements made by this group (in any context) which directly reference violence are (apparently) considered reasonable and acceptable.

Absolutely this. I think the account is quite sincere - and to be fair, the rest of the signs are not like this one. I’m just surprised they picked this one to include, especially when they describe the thread as “edited”!

Maybe I'm really thick but I actually don't understand what the sign means? What's with the /? Is it supposed to be like a song?

Got you! Sorry for my slowness.

I would hope that noone finds it reasonable and acceptable apart from a few fringe lunatics!

Put the apostrophe in the wrong place as well.

Is it a pastiche of song lyrics?

quantumbutterfly · 29/07/2024 10:27

I was amused by the thread comparison between the chap who got his wanger out to slap a piano on channel 4 and Elaine miller's fun fur merkin.

It's giving me Rick Mayall in 'the young ones' vibes.

UpThePankhurst · 29/07/2024 10:35

These signs just scream the myriad problems of the holder.

JulySheWillFlyAndGiveNoWarningToHerFlight · 29/07/2024 10:37

According to several official-seeming reports on the internet, the number of people who have ever lived on this planet is about 119 billion.

The number on the placard/bit of cardboard is over 457 billion.

Perhaps the card means 457 in one location, 759 in another, 864 in a third and 530 in a fourth?!

Justwrong68 · 29/07/2024 11:07

They have terrible PR

Catsmere · 29/07/2024 11:17

Isn't it curious how a woman putting up Adult Human Female stickers and the like gets arrested, but this sign calling for women to be murdered is fine.

UpThePankhurst · 29/07/2024 11:21

It always strikes me too how this is the kind of posturing a child or a disaffected teen does. It looks all big and tough, and it comes from the same political movement that wants women as human shields when they go out in balaclavas to chalk rude messages on pavements and shout a bit.

It's also explained here on a useful site called 'Know Your Meme'Smile
BORN TO DIE / WORLD IS A FUCK / Kill Em All 1989 / I am trash man / 410,757,864,530 DEAD COPS | Know Your Meme

Started out as random meaningless aggressive word salad, ended up on a trans pride placard... hmmmm..... there's a surprise!
