Girlies. I’ve read this twice and still have no idea.

What the actual fuck is this? I have been trying to write some kind of erudite comment for some time but I can’t, so I have had some gin, which has not helped.

Girlies? And it goes downhill from there.

Yes, and thought it rather odd, have we gone back to the eighties or is (at least some of) the US still stuck there, or what? (Trying not to spoil it for any fans, as far as possible!)

IKR? I can say now as the day has passed there as well as here.

Connections is a daily puzzle like the wall on Only Connect - 16 words that you have to group into a set of 4 that all share a similar connection. Yesterday one group was “Hotties” and included such pearls as “Fox” “Babe” and “Snack”.

Fascinating article! So much gobbledegook but I still learned something, charliXx thingy isn't "the one that had a kid with Elon" as I thought previously.

I also don’t think many of the mentioned girlies are female.

Charli xcx, Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter are all female.

"snack" made me double take

I thought WTF when I saw that yesterday, I’ve never even heard it on American TV shows.

Rummly · 28/07/2024 09:05

That is a collector’s item of pop music journalism. The music is meaningless, pretentious bollocks and so is the journalism. You get much the same with fashion writing.

What I’m really perplexed by, though, is a comment from a woman whose job is described as being a “social executive”. WTF is that?

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 28/07/2024 09:08

oh, I’ve heard ‘snack’ — not often, but I remember Eleanor on The Good Place using it (about herself).

swimsong · 28/07/2024 09:13

Strathfan · 27/07/2024 21:47

It’s the title. “Girlies”. 🙄

There is some weird shit going on atm. Anyone do New York Times Connections? Anyone done it today?

Well I guess snack and fox are unisex so didn't bother me. And the concept is real enough.

You beat me to this comment 😂

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 28/07/2024 09:48

My understanding of that story is that the writer enjoys music made by these young women.
If I had a few hours to waste, I might look up every unfamiliar word and reference in that BBC story. I did look up Chappell Roan and find that, despite being ‘queer’, she actually is a woman.
Good luck to them all! And may they never try to ‘transition’ into anything other than their next decade.

Edited

Maybe it’s me being old and fusty. 🤷

Although “hottie” is grim, no?!

CruCru · 28/07/2024 10:00

It’s possible that the author didn’t write / pick the title of the article.

Bodeganights · 28/07/2024 12:32

Stumped me. All I got is that music evolves (no shit sherlock) and some young women singer/songwriters are better than slightly older women singer/songwriters.

It's like a bunch of tweens "discovered" a new pop star, that has a sense of humour. As if they only listen earnestly to current pop and cannot for the life of them see the humour in it. I love all kinds of music and the humour is deffo there.

MrsWhattery · 28/07/2024 14:17

Yes the whole idea that there's something new going on is astonishingly clueless.

"Brat is, in the words of Charli XCX, a girl who "has a breakdown, but kind of like parties through it", who is honest, blunt, "a little bit volatile"."

We've had female singers and pop stars who've explored and embodied exactly this forever. Billie Holiday, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, Poly Styrene, Stevie Nicks, Amy Winehouse, and on and on. With better music.

Yeah, that was Grimes.

Charlie XCX “transitioned into her 30s”?
She didn’t just “get older” like an actual human? Girlies, ffs. What a bunch of nonsense.

I think that's unisex too - and not serious enough to disturb. There are a couple of 'silver foxes' hang out on the beach near me that, after a few glasses of wine, might be described between friends as hotties. It doesn't imply lechery - just a light-hearted recognition that some people are attractive.
