Girlies. I’ve read this twice and still have no idea.

What the actual fuck is this? I have been trying to write some kind of erudite comment for some time but I can’t, so I have had some gin, which has not helped.

Girlies? And it goes downhill from there.

I have absolutely no idea what that page is supposed to be saying other than there being some singers who the writer likes more than Katy Perry.

Have they just had somebody in on their Y10 Work Experience?

Boiledbeetle · 27/07/2024 19:20

Huh?

Sorry, that's all I've got.

Ahem:

I also don’t think many of the mentioned girlies are female.

It feels very AI

Clickbaity articles about new memes, or trending topics on Twix/Tiktok (often with the original humour/irony shooting over the journalist's head) are nothing new. Its much easier and cheaper in these days of constrained budgets to spend half an hour on Twix and knock out an article then hit the streets and do real journalism. The "Brat girl summer" is already being done to death.

But that article really feels like its not saying anything. The tone feels like those listicles written by AI

Also, I think most of the "girlies" are female. Chappel Roan is a female its just that her makeup and personna/style inspiration is drag queen and she's a "queer icon". Like Marge Simpson when she starts selling tupperware.

WarriorN · 27/07/2024 21:05

Glad it's not just me. 6:30 am this morning, this is what I was trying to work out.

And then Sabrina woman is barely mentioned in the rest of the article.

I have noticed that Charlie xcx was listed in the mercury prize shortlist last week (happened to be listening to 6 music when announced) and then suddenly she's being name dropped left right and centre by the bbc. This is the second article I've read about her since the shortlist came out.

I'd never heard of her so went to look her up and discovered she has featured a number of transwomen in her videos and is seen as an "ally."

Had to look Sabrina up too.

wtf is it all about re Kamala?!

Dumbo12 · 27/07/2024 21:12

I'm almost certain that is written in English, which I have been able to read for 60 years, I understood Wendy word on its own but I have no understanding of what they all mean together.

What makes you say that?

BobbyBiscuits · 27/07/2024 21:19

Stop trying to make Charlie xcx happen. She's so fucking cringe. Ha.
The language in the article is nauseating though. Absolutely meaningless drivel.

SpicyMoth · 27/07/2024 21:19

Not a clue, and I'm arguably of the generation that should be able to understand that mess!
Absolutely not the foggiest at all...

DuesToTheDirt · 27/07/2024 21:28

OP, it's not just you. I read that in disbelief. "Girlies" ffs.

tobee · 27/07/2024 21:42

Been expecting a thread on this all day!

Girlies. Ffs indeed

Strathfan · 27/07/2024 21:47

It’s the title. “Girlies”. 🙄

There is some weird shit going on atm. Anyone do New York Times Connections? Anyone done it today?

By clicking on it it gives BBC reason to re employ the writer.
Its so depressing

Yes, and thought it rather odd, have we gone back to the eighties or is (at least some of) the US still stuck there, or what? (Trying not to spoil it for any fans, as far as possible!)

God yes. I wish I hadn’t now.

What makes you say that?

Charlie xcx isn’t. One of the other people claims to be queer and is dressed as a stereotypical parody of a woman, so who knows? The rest are referred to using female pronouns but that means very little these days.

OP posts:
FrancescaContini · 27/07/2024 22:23

It made my brain hurt. I’m trying to work out what a “queer female” is. I was also confused by the sentence “..transitioning into her 30s…” Do we transition into a new decade, or should the “into” have been “in”?

SnakesAndArrows · 27/07/2024 22:26

Oh hang on, she’s transitioned into her thirties, not in her thirties. I thought she was another “days of girlhood” female wannabe with all this girlie business.

The world has gone quite mad.

No I now think she is an actual woman who thinks she’s a girlie. Or the BBC thinks is a girlie.

I have no idea what a queer female is, unless she’s a lesbian who doesn’t object to the term queer.

CestLaVie123 · 27/07/2024 22:59

I saw that earlier. "Girlies". Wtaf BBC!!!!

MrsWhattery · 27/07/2024 23:32

I knew there'd be a thread!

When I saw it, I gave the article a chance because I thought the "girlies" in the headline was going to be explained, like it's a specific term being used in a slang way (still unlikely to be a very feminist moment of course, but would have at least made it make sense...)

But nope. It was actually just used in the headline and caption as a description of the women the article is about.

FFS. How has pseudo, crappy woman-diminishing "feminism" so successfully replaced actual feminism?
