BMA to vote to 'disavow' the Cass review

The governing body of the BMA is to hold a vote tomorrow (Wednesday July 17) to 'disavow' the Cass Review. Words fail me to be honest. Any doctors, particularly members of the BMA, able to explain or comment?

Article by Hannah Barnes in the Spectator www.newstatesman.com/politics/health/2024/07/why-are-british-doctors-voting-to-reject-the-cass-report and thread on X/Twitter x.com/hannahsbee/status/1813252387504857241

Interesting that Doctors Reddit is not enthusiastic about this.

I used to be active on Medtwitter and that was very TRA. Mainly male gay posters or women wanting to help disadvantaged groups. Nobody with kids.

Had a look on a closed doctors forum- there they are all saying shit like this is why they left the BMA years ago. Plus an interesting suggestion that it has been proposed to shut the activists down.

There are regular threads by GPs who want nothing to do with trans prescribing and doctors who persuade parents not to touch the Tavistock with a bargepole.

got a link?

PepeParapluie · 17/07/2024 15:06

I think a pp mentioned this, but surely the indemnity insurers will take a very cautious approach (or charge absolutely loads in premiums) to covering anything that might go against the Cass recommendations, regardless of whether this motion passes or not. I.e whatever political position the BMA or any other group chooses to take, the reality is that the insurers who will get the bills if it all goes wrong will exert some influence over it. I can’t see them being keen on wanting to cover gender medicine for children post-Cass.

the article (New Statesman, can't see it all) starts by saying that the 'rules do not apply' in gender medicine, which is an entirely bad start, suggesting any experimentation is reasonable. This is worrying if the BMA thinks this. Would they say it of cancer sufferers, girls with anorexia?

porridgecake I’m really confused about what you posted. A male person needs treatment for endometriosis? But they haven’t got any womb lining to cause the endometriosis. Men haven’t got a female reproductive system. So it’s not possible. Someone here is very confused and/or being lied to, or is lying?

IwantToRetire · 17/07/2024 17:02

Queer Theory breaks everything.

So true.

Women's Liberation
Women's Studies
Same sex relationships
Gender non conforming
and so on

Is it the Queer Threory rather than being the radical analysis of oppressive societies, is in fact the indulgence of those who are the privileged beneficiaries of those societies.

Apparently in very rare cases men can develop an endometriosis like condition. The bit that doesn’t make sense is that they would have to transition to get treatment. That’s bizarre.

Exactly. Completely incoherent nonsense. But even supposedly educated people believe this rubbish. I said to her that he hadn't got a uterus and never had one, so endometriosis not possible. But the propaganda is pushed relentlessly. The individual probably has some sort of bowel problem.

Slothtoes · 17/07/2024 17:54

Glad you could talk to your friend about it porridgecake. She must have huge congnitive dissonance.

Sorry to hear that anyone is unwell, of course, but appropriating a female disease for validation is such an appalling thing to do. I was just hoping that it wasn’t about that.

DrBlackbird · 17/07/2024 17:55

Any update?

Slothtoes · 17/07/2024 17:56

Thanks Signalbox that is interesting.
IANADoctor. Feel like medically it’s very confusing to describe something in a male body, in terms of a condition of the lining of the uterus.

AlexaAdventuress · 17/07/2024 17:57

Yes, nearly six o'clock. They should have made their minds up by now.

BMA saying the article is misleading.

"Instead, the BMA press office say:
“The BMA will continue with further work in this area to contribute positively to the provision of care and services to this often neglected population and will be setting out the BMA’s stance in due course.”
More to come …"

I think endometriosis is now being described as cell tissue similar to that found in the womb that has developed elsewhere, rather than it being womb tissue per se. My (rather ancient but degree level) biologically educated mind can kind of accept this can happen in males in rare instances where there are abnormal levels of oestrogen - such as during some cancer treatments (and cross-sex hormone treatment?!) or thought obesity related in this case.

I guess you do hear of strange cell growth on occasions (such as tumours containing teeth and hair etc). I am no expert or dr though!

WorriedMutha · 17/07/2024 18:38

Does the BMA statement mean that the vote is called off. I can't believe they would do that if they thought it would pass. Is this a climb down.

AlexaAdventuress · 17/07/2024 18:44

Well spotted @GargoylesofBeelzebub - thanks.

Looks like they're backpedalling. "No that's not what we really meant!"

Or as I should probably say in Mumsnet idiom, 'reverse ferret'.

The patient is described as suffering from cirrhosis associated with Hepatitis C, but if alcohol were involved, it’s known to increase oestrogen levels in the body in men.

Ah thanks - I see now I was reading a different paper, here: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5833878/

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 17/07/2024 20:07

It's shocking that the BMA are doing all this behind closed doors without consulting the members. Hopefully a whistleblower will come forward and we'll find out what actually went on.

INSANE!
What the hell they are giving the go ahead to harm children even more!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 17/07/2024 20:34

BMA say the outcomes of the discussions won’t be made public and are insisting Hannah Barnes report is wrong. She’s having none of it!

IwantToRetire · 17/07/2024 21:12

We are aware of press speculation about our internal policy making process and the Cass review - please see our response below🧵1/4

The BMA continues to give extensive consideration to the methodology, findings and recommendations of the Cass review in line with the Association’s articles requiring us to ‘promote the achievement of high quality health care’. 2/4

This is a substantial process, making use of expertise within the Association, in line with the BMA’s internal policy making processes. It would be inappropriate to pre-empt our position, or to provide further public comment on those processes. 3/4

Abuse directed towards BMA members or staff is totally unacceptable and has no place in serious consideration of these complex issues. 4/4

Or, as is now my favourite version of this from a MN on this board this week whose name I'm afraid I've forgotten:"beep beep, reverse ferret".

What was this abuse? And from whom?
