This happened near me - I'm really shocked that he only received a suspended sentence 😞

Yes I remember this too. Gave both my DDs a lecture about not stopping for the police at night in this type of situation, but drive to a police station.

This is what I was taught in the 80s. In my culture we would never trust the police to just pull over, either at night or in a deserted area. I've passed the same info down to my step and own children.

My advice will remain because violence against women is just not a problem for men...so it is a systemic issue I don't see any resolution to.

"Officers found an LED lightbar, handcuffs and a baseball bat in his car."

😮 and only a suspended sentence???

Christ. Is there anything men can do to women that’s totally unacceptable? I know rape is usually ok because who cares. And killing women during sex is ok, because rough sex. But …. No. There isn’t a but. We just really don’t matter.

gardenmusic · 10/07/2024 19:50

Could this sentence be appealed? Would that have to be the victim?

pudseypie · 10/07/2024 19:54

The police simply don't care. A 12 yo girl was upskirted on a train this week in our town. Man confronted by other passengers, police called and arrived at next train station, found many different upskirting photos on his phone from multiple women / girls and was simply let go, no charges as this poor girl was too scared to press charges.
Really, what hope do women and girls have?

PasteldeNata78 · 10/07/2024 19:55

The lack of concern about how bad this is - unbelievable!
Personally I'm never going to stop for police of anybody else for that matter in a quiet place with no witnesses. They can fine me if they like.
It's not up to the general public to stop these potential murderes masquerading as policemen ffs

The pervert who has just been found guilty of attempting to kidnap Holly Willoughby got a suspended sentence for his first offences too- which were both attempts to kidnap women off a train by threatening them with a weapon.

these men will always escalate, he clearly had it in mind to do this lady great harm, and Wayne Couzens did exactly the same thing.

The man who killed my friend aged 17 had a history of violence against women, he had even set fire to a previous girlfriend, but he wasn't jailed till he stabbed my friend to death after lying in wait for her on her way to work.

This was in the early 90s, nothing has changed.

TheaBrandt · 10/07/2024 20:05

Started listening to the podcast on the holly willoughby case. There are numerous sub groups online discussing abducting women / best way to do it / sharing abduction related porn. Aren’t men delightful 🙄🙄🙄

Honestly I veer towards being quite relaxed but shaken by that as have teen girls.

It seems that Jess Phillips has a very full in-basket. And then there is the other 99% of VAWG.

No, no, no. Men never pretend to be something they're not. It never happens.

Is this a trans reference?

Can't have a single topic on mumsnet anymore that isn't about or becomes about trans people can we.

Perhaps the poster is referring to the fact that numerous politicians have declared that men would not pretend to be something they are not to gain access to women, girls and children.

LastMinuteSubstitution · 10/07/2024 23:27

This makes my blood run cold. This sentence has to be reviewed surely.

No33 · 10/07/2024 23:39

We just don't matter, do we?

NotDonna · 10/07/2024 23:40

I’m never certain that these crimes should be somewhat hidden away in ‘feminism’ rather than being highlighted in mainstream ‘aibu’

Saschka · 10/07/2024 23:41

YouJustDoYou · 10/07/2024 16:43

Yeah, I mean, it takes a woman to be murdered for the police to care...

They didn’t care about that. Look at the vigil. They cared about the backlash.

MugPlate · 10/07/2024 23:44

That’s £154 surcharge will definitely convince him not to try again.

You are right.

That advice about refusing to get out of the car, but instead say you’ll drive to the police station, is invaluable.

And the number, on just this short thread, speaking of something similar happening to them is a warning that it really is not that rare.

Andthereitis · 11/07/2024 00:08

Sir Starmer's prisons won't empty themselves.

justasking111 · 11/07/2024 00:13

Back in the 80's a man kept stopping women on the A55. Police gave advice, don't stop but drive to a police station. Now we can use a mobile and call 999.

Anyone can ask the Attorney General to review a sentence but only for Crown Court cases, not Magistrates unfortunately. I don't understand why this case wasn't referred to Crown tbh Confused

mach2 · 11/07/2024 06:20

I'm surprised that it's triable either way.

Theunamedcat · 11/07/2024 06:27

gardenmusic · 10/07/2024 18:55

I can't even find the words. Is it OK until they actually use the weapons, then?

Basically yes

Years ago my ex threatened to burn my house down with me and the kids in it he admitted it he said it to the police they said call them if he does social services still insisted he get contact with the kids too (I should add this was just ONE of the threats) the other suggestion was I nail my letterbox shut

mach2 · 11/07/2024 06:47

Whaaattt???!!!

Noseyoldcow · 11/07/2024 07:05

"That advice about refusing to get out of the car, but instead say you’ll drive to the police station, is invaluable"
Good advice, but even around where I live, I wouldn't be sure of the nearest station, they've all been shut. And before that they were part time. Were I to call 999 instead, would I get a response?

gardenmusic · 11/07/2024 07:17

There was a member of the house of Lords who voted against making upskirting a crime.
We ruly are second class citizens.

Fizbosshoes · 11/07/2024 07:29

There is a poster at our train station about upskirting being a crime. Its depressing that a) people need to be reminded of that in the first place but b) it's more of a hypothetical crime in that you're probably way more likely to get away with that, than travelling on the wrong ticket
