Mumsnetters - please watch this video by Laila Mickelwait and consider buying her book 'Takedown'. (Hopefully I've configured the link correctly!) The stories are heart-breaking.

Pornhub isn't "banned from Google searches". It won't offer the word Pornhub as an auto-fill suggestion, even if you've visited the site before or have it bookmarked, and it never shows the website link shaded to denote it's one you've used before - but that's nothing to do with Pornhub specifically, Google search does that with all porn sites as standard behaviour. It's not banned at all.

Many years ago I had to review the search terms on my employers Google white label to manage the functionality that suppresses the auto complete.(if you want to know why: we wanted to trim the list to ensure that we didn't suppress too much of the auto complete, as it's a very good driver of conversion rates). Truly an awful, awful list of depravity.

WeaselCheeks · 10/07/2024 19:31

Pornhub are awful. I remember reading a few years back a BBC article about a teenage girl who was raped at 14, which was filmed and put on Pornhub. She told them that it was rape, that she was underage, but they refused to take it down. It was only when she created a fake lawyers letter that they acted.

Poor lass tried to commit suicide during her recovery, both because of the trauma of the rape, and because her schoolmates were bullying her because of the video.

ExH was into rape porn (which is why he’s my ex) and I know pornhub was the one of the main sites he used. He always maintained that he was in the right and there was nothing wrong with what he was doing. Everyone did it, etc.

He left the history on the computer, which is how I discovered he was into this. I saw a few of the things he watched and remember reporting one as the girl looked to be quite young, under 18.

Reading this thread is tough. It just confirms what I thought all those years ago. I wish exH could read this. I wish he could finally realise its not ok and just how wrong it really is.

yesmen · 10/07/2024 23:36

He does know.

He just does not care

NotDonna · 11/07/2024 00:24

Thank you for highlighting. I’ve signed the petition.

LushAlice · 09/07/2024 21:06

No, it’s just me trying to support the amazing work she’s doing on behalf of women.

Can you add a link to her petition in AIBU she’s pretty close to her goal? Probably the best way to support her work and get rid of Pornhub and similar.

It really is shocking, isn't it! It amazes me, especially in this day and age (good grief that made me feel old!) with AI and the like, as well as a much better sense of corporate responsibility, just what things Google will suggest for a user to look at. That, and how quick and eager Search seems to be to defeat it's own blocklist, which I guess is an evolution of the "people who clicked that also clicked this" functionality (I know I'm preaching to the choir here, even though I've not a clue how these things actually work.. sorry!)

Jennyathemall · 09/07/2024 20:53

So this just looks like a thinly veiled advert for her book.

If she writes something worth reading why wouldn't you read her book?

Lavenderfields121 · 11/07/2024 08:09

The blatant book advertisement in the OP is off putting.

quantumbutterfly · 11/07/2024 09:19

Book recommendations are not uncommon on FWR.

I've put the book on my wishlist.

endofthelinefinally · 11/07/2024 09:30

I really appreciate the book recommendations on FWR.
I don't know what is going on on MN this week. There seems to be a noticeable increase in efforts to discourage women from speaking.

Dumbo12 · 11/07/2024 09:34

I'm fascinated by the way people are reacting to the op. Rather than be horrified at what pornhub have been allowing on their platform, women are objecting to the manner in which this has been brought to their attention.
It is microcosm of how women's behaviour is policed out in the world.
Your message might be ok, but look at how awful you are when you point it out!

Great idea…. I’ll certainly try, but as you’ve probably guessed, I’m not a whizz with technology!

Do those of you who, faced with a horrific story involving child pornography (about which I knew nothing, thanks OP), insist on bickering about the suspiciousness of the link, the OP's motives, how her post was phrased, etc. realise how dodgy and defensive you come across? I would encourage you to re-examine your focus of attention.

Edited

I do appreciate the irony of me pulling you up on terminology in a post which I actually agree with, but it's really important we get away from using the term 'child pornography'. It can make it sound like just another category of porn, or give the impression it's in some way possible for children to consent to becoming a 'porn star', which of course they can't. I do know that you weren't implying either of these things, but if we can de-legitimise use of the phrase it makes that even clearer. They are always "images of child sexual abuse".

MN don't allow links to petitions in ordinary threads. You have to put the link in the "petitions" thread, then mention it in the ordinary thread.

If you go to the trafficking hub petition website, there are links to articles - below is an excerpt from one in 'the New Yorker'

...A thirty-year-old man had been arrested in Florida for lewd and lascivious battery of a fifteen-year-old girl who had been missing for nearly a year; her family had found approximately fifty-eight videos of her on Pornhub and other Web sites. (The company says that it removed the material the day it was notified.) Shortly after that, the Sunday Times of London published an article about the corporations that advertise on Pornhub, including Heinz and Unilever, and noted that its reporters had found “dozens of examples of illegal material on the website within minutes.” (The company replied that child-sexual-abuse material made up a tiny proportion of content, and that the aim was to eradicate it.)...

I'm still letting the bolded bits sink in myself.

Literally Elons idea and he has taken down any x rated restrictions. Porn is where the money is.

The letter ''X'' is definitely linked with ''X rated'' in many people's minds {If they are over 40 at least}
That, coupled with plain black background implies a more adult theme compared to the more innocent blue bird and ''Twitter''.

Definitely done purposefully. That was no mere coincidence.

EarthSight · 11/07/2024 15:38

oakleaffy · 09/07/2024 21:56

Why on earth did they do that?
It makes it sound so seedy.
”X” sounds pornish

“Twitter” didn’t- but rarely went on it- Even less now it’s called “ X”.

You should google the name of Elon Musk's son. It'll be something to do with that.

placemats · 11/07/2024 22:56

My concern with this link and the promotion is that there's a lot of comments below the x link that support Reform UK.
