Anyone voting SDP tomorrow?

I'm in a very safe Lib Dem seat (Daisy Cooper).

I don't want to vote for any of the three main parties. LD and Lab have lost my confidence due to their arrogant take on women's rights and safety, Tories haven't done enough during their time in power. I lost my beloved dad traumatically and too young during the pandemic due to Tory (mis)management and pressure on the NHS. I've never voted Tory and right now they're off the table for a variety of reasons.
Re. Greens, my feelings are similar to LD and Lab but even worse (would've possibly considered if their focus was the environment and not full of TRAs).

I don't particularly want to spoil my vote but I'm trying to find another option that isn't Reform. I'm having a browse of the SDP manifesto, are there any glaring horrors I shouldn't overlook? It looks fairly promising so far although not perfect.

"Daisy Cooper is driving me crazy, she seems like an intelligent, logical person but clearly ambitious"

@GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat what is about ambitious women that you don't like? Should intelligent and logical women know their place at home?

I'd love to have Daisy Cooper as an MP, I'm also in the constituency next door and I'm grateful that the Lib Dems are fighting for this seat. My friends in St Albans wax lyrical about Daisy, she's just really good and I hope she's party leader at some point.

But back to the SDP. First time in my life that my vote will count and I wouldn't waste it on a party who think single mothers are second class citizens.

I live in a solid Libdem constituency, wish we had an SDP candidate, I voted for them on the London mayoral elections. Strange thing is one our candidates is from the horrible George Galloways party, this is a pretty "naice" constituency, hope he loses his deposit.

My St A friends think she’s awful 🤷‍♀️

I think you've misunderstood me. Where did I say I didn't like ambitious women? You can still be ambitious while respecting women's rights and children's safeguarding.

It bothers me that an intelligent individual and a female politician (which isn't always the easiest thing to be) is happy to throw other women under the bus in pursuit of her career goals. The Lib Dems haven't budged even the tiniest amount which I personally find offensive and highly dismissive.

I respect her on a number of issues and I would've voted for her were it not for this nonsensical stance.

That's lovely that your friends wax lyrical about Daisy Cooper but it's not compulsory, we each have a vote.

I don't agree with the SDP'S position on single mothers but they're not going to get in so no danger of that policy coming into effect. I wanted to vote for a party that broadly aligns with my concerns. Unfortunately that's none of the other parties and I didn't want to spoil my vote.

I didn't vote for them in the end.

isthesolution · 04/07/2024 15:45

I'll be voting for them. I don't necessarily agree with every single thing they say but I can't vote for some of the parties with the gender policies how they are. I also like their education policy - take the disruptive kids out of schools and put them in units that give them the support they need while letting everyone else learn!

They are definitely most aligned with my thinking. The seat in my area will go to labour I'm sure but I won't let that stop me voting sdp.

Briefly considered it, read up on them, discovered that they had some potential arrangement with Reform, and thought no thanks.

@VeryQuaintIrene do you know where you saw that, or have more details? I have not come across that except in connection with something a few years back.

SmugglersHaunt · 04/07/2024 15:46

I’d love to vote for them but they’re not stacking in my constituency this time which is a shame. There’s only bad choices left!

mcduffy · 04/07/2024 15:52

I voted for them. I'm a Tory (with a heart Grin) but didn't want to vote them in again. Mine is a safer than safe labour seat so more of a protest vote

Sidaway · 04/07/2024 16:16

Yes, I just did.

I'm in Lib Dem "gendered souls" Layla Moran's constituency, and I'm not voting for her again.

Neither am I voting Tory, I just can't. I might have held my nose (purely on gender issues) and voted Labour, but fortunately an SDP candidate materialised (a female one!), plus leaflet through door mentioning sex-based rights - the only one that did.

I don't like everything about the SPD - I share others' misgivings on this thread, but there was no-one else I felt I could vote for.

I saw that too, and was worried. However my constituency has both Reform and SDP candidates running, so obviously not in a pact where I am.

feellikeanalien · 04/07/2024 17:23

I was initially hoping they would be like the SDP of old. I would have voted for them but withdrawing from the ECHR and refugee conventions, what effectively looked like residential units for single mums and fairly disturbing welfare policies put me off.

TheColourOutOfSpace · 04/07/2024 17:25

@ScrollingLeaves if you listen to this interview, he explains the SDP agreement with Reform. Starts around 47 minutes in.

TheDogsMother · 04/07/2024 17:45

I've voted for them but they don't stand a chance in this staunchly Tory seat. Some of their manifesto sounds great though some if a bit disturbing. Given there's no money in the pot so none of the parties will be able to make much meaningful change so I chose SDP for a tactical vote and a single issue vote (GC).

RedRosie · 04/07/2024 19:27

I was going to vote SDP, then looked into them more closely and realised I couldn't.

I couldn't vote Tory as I can't forgive them for Brexit.

In the end, I voted "Rejoin EU" as we are in one of the small number of constituencies where they were able to put up a candidate.

My vote will make no difference to the outcome here, which is everything that's wrong with our political system.

floppybit · 05/07/2024 23:02

I voted for them, I didn't even know they were standing until I saw the ballot paper!

chilling19 · 07/07/2024 07:04

HorribleNecktie · 04/07/2024 11:24

I did as a protest vote, I’m a single issue voter at the moment and they were unambiguous on sex based rights. I don’t like all of their policies but recognition of the sex binary as a basic and fundamental truth is a line in the sand for me. If political parties are willing to lie, gaslight and persecute people over something so unambiguously true, then what other bollocks are they willing to go along with next?

🖕

I voted SDP too

renomeno · 07/07/2024 08:04

SDP were my form of a protest vote
