POW candidate's pub ban successfully challenged

Good for FSU and Liz Panton. I can't believe the arrogance of these people.

“On the 7th of May 2024 you came to the Cumberland wearing a hoody making a clear statement. Your name now appears as a parliamentary candidate to represent the Party of Women at Westminster, a party with which the Cumberland will not be associated. Accordingly you will no longer be allowed entry within the pub’s boundaries.”

Earlier this week, we received the following response from the pub’s lawyer: “I can advise you that my client has now written to Ms Panton to advise her that it has reversed its decision to bar her from the Cumberland Arms.”

FSU member successfully fights back after being banned from pub for gender critical views – The Free Speech Union

The FSU scored a significant victory this week, helping one of our members successfully fight back after she was barred from her local pub for wearing a hoody emblazoned with a gender critical slogan.

Thanks for posting this.

Had not heard this had happened.

Did they ever explained why representing PoW means you aren't suitable to be in a pub?!

IwantToRetire · 03/07/2024 17:49

Sorry, have now seen in the article they think supporting WDI is grounds for being banned!

The “clear statement” alluded to by the pub was a message inscribed on her hoody that read “Women’s Declaration International: WDI”, and was accompanied by a logo representing the same organisation. On the webpage of WDI it states that it is a “group of volunteer women from across the globe dedicated to protecting women’s sex-based rights”.

Redshoeblueshoe · 03/07/2024 17:54

As approx 29 pubs a week close it seems rather fucking stupid to say people with GC views aren't welcome.
Especially as the vast majority of the public agree.

lcakethereforeIam · 03/07/2024 19:10

This was nicely worded

Sadly, Ms Panton’s case isn’t the first time we’ve had to step in to support people accused of having had a little too much to think.

This made me laugh, I know I shouldn't - I mean it's insulting and all that, but it's so OTT it's funny. I acknowledge that I wouldn't find it so funny if I was Liz Panton, and I'm sorry she was subjected to it.
But I laughed at tortured ukuleles, bike-riding gorillas and the proliferation of full stops.
Rock on, LizSmile

@ginaritchie Defending women and girls most basic human rights is bonkers?

Thankfully you are in the extreme fringe minority. It's Panton that is bonkers or horrible here.... Your horrible views are about as welcome to the overwhelming majority as a far in a space suit.

arethereanyleftatall · 07/07/2024 11:56

@ginaritchie
You're on mumsnet to say you don't agree with someone supporting womens rights?!? Good luck with that. Ps fuck off.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/07/2024 11:57

It's bullying, isn't it?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/07/2024 11:58

What she's like as a musician is completely irrelevant here, she's been discriminated against multiple times.

You're 100% correct, Ereshkigalangcleg, and* *I hope you understand my use of humour in no way condones the content of the post, it just lends itself to derision, doesn't?🙄

don't be such a bully. I'm sure you think you're very clever and all, and you do have a way with words, but fuck me - standing up for women's rights upsets you so much you went into all that?

you might need a nice lie down

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 07/07/2024 12:17

I’m torn between reporting that post for the bigoted, bullying crap it is, and leaving it up for maximum evidence of the shit women put up with.

Liz, keep singing, keep thinking, and if that annoys the likes of GinaRitchie, frankly so much the better. They clearly need a bit of perspective.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/07/2024 12:19

I know I’m pretty ancient, but does anyone else still equate PoW with ‘prisoner of war’?

I'm afraid that is where my mind first goes to.

An unfortunate abbreviation really.

I think it should be left up - one of the most viciously bonkers posts I've seen on here. Like what the actual fuck 🫣🤪

That was my first thought; Princess of Wales was the second, which is odd, given that I'm Irish. I obviously spend far too much time here.

lcakethereforeIam · 07/07/2024 13:03

Because I spend far too much time on FWR, FTM always takes me a moment on pregnancy threads. POW (all caps) puts me in mind of DC (that's Detective Comics) comics. I like it....Batman 😁

I assumed it was deliberate- that we’re effectively prisoners of war. We’re the casualties in a patriarchal system. But I may have been overthinking!

Bugger! I have only just spotted this thread so I missed what sounded like a wild post by ginaritchie!

"tortured ukuleles, bike-riding gorillas and the proliferation of full stops." 😂

WTF 😂

Did Gina claim to be familiar with the ukulele sessions at the Cumberland Arms? Or is it is just me who they have an issue with?

I'll let you make up your own minds.

These are clips from a session when we had a weekend away, so not at The Cumberland Arms:

This is my own YouTube Channel:

Sorry, no bike-riding gorillas 🤷‍♀️

POWNewcastleEastWallsend · 07/07/2024 20:26

Oh "Gina" - I do not think your daddy would have been very impressed with your behaviour today.

How dare you presume to lecture, chide and insult women for doing what we think necessary to protect women and safeguard children.

Crouton19 · 07/07/2024 22:17

I see FTM on other parts of the site and have to take a second before realising it stands for First Time Mum!
