Just been canvassed by the Lib Dems

I've just had a local representative from the Lib Dems canvass our house this afternoon.

I expressed that the local candidate has some odd policies regarding local issues for our borough, and our ward in particular, but because they are local council issues they probably won't impact my vote. The volunteer was happy to dicsuss why these things are policy, and what other things they might do.

However, I thought I'd touch on the issue of gender identity. The moment I stated that the national party's policies on gender identity and women's rights aren't aligned with my own political beliefs the volunteer immediately said "I can see you're never going to vote for the party", turned round and stomped away.

This really is a lightning-rod issue for them, and "no debate" isn't going to cut it.

😂
Evidently still clinging onto #nodebate

HoneyButterPopcorn · 30/06/2024 17:23

Sounds like they have heard this time and time again. Maybe they need to start listening?

GrandmaMazur · 30/06/2024 18:41

My Lib Dem candidate looked a bit uncomfortable when I brought up gender ideology and said he didn’t necessarily agree with his party on this issue but didn’t elaborate. He then started backing away when I said I couldn’t vote for him while Ed Davey was their leader because of his views. I suspect I wasn’t the first person to bring this up!

backinthebox · 30/06/2024 18:47

This is my Libdem candidate. It’s clear who I have to vote for, but I think the entire lot of them are a shower of shit. I’ve never been in such a ‘try and pick the least bad option’ before when it comes to voting!

Belcher has switched locations then, after years of trying in Wiltshire!

I will never forget Belcher's tweet about something related to the last GRA consultation which didn't go well for men. It was along the lines of "I'm sitting on the toilet reading this and crying this morning".

Absolutely gross!

Sadly I am stuck with that image whenever Belcher's face pops up.

I was canvassed today by the Lib Dem's and said that I agreed with them in a lot, but their attitude to women's rights really concerned me. The canvasser agreed and said it bothered her as well, but she was trying to change it from within.

I know the candidate quite well and he is generally reasonable so I don't have any particular qualms about discussing it with him so I've said he is welcome to contact me. Baby steps!

Tontostitis · 30/06/2024 19:13

The Lib Dems knocked at our door and I said 'I've voted for you previously but I am now very concerned on your stance on Women's Rights can you explain..' didnt get any further as she immediately walked off saying 'we don't want people like you voting for us'. That told me then.

Rhaidimiddim · 30/06/2024 19:14

Same here. I raised women's rights and the Lib Dem candidate - it was the candidate, not a canvasser - just left, no discussion.

Shortshriftandlethal · 30/06/2024 19:18

The Lib Dems are even more weird than Labour on this...it's like they actually believe it.

Sprinklechops · 30/06/2024 19:25

Bloody hell. I didn't realise lib Dems were so cowardly about this.
Fucking ridiculous that there is no one reasonable to vote for this time

Rightsraptor · 30/06/2024 19:29

From what I've seen of the polls, the Lib Dems really shouldn't be so picky about whose votes they want.

My mouth just dropped open at that. Unbelievable..... they just do NOT get it.

I’m in a Lib Dem / Con marginal. I’ve been canvassed by both the Con and the Labour candidates in person, the Lib Dems sent a young door knocker who said that he thought their manifesto protected single sex spaces. I said I didn’t agree and he left, but he didn’t flounce, to be fair.

It’s very marginal, my vote could well make a difference.

Crouton19 · 30/06/2024 19:48

I find the idea of a Lib Dem stomping off in their socks-and-sandals combo very amusing OP! 😂 (or is it just me who sees them all that way...)

It has been interesting to see how little they have mentioned this in their leaflets and materials and I wonder how many of their grey haired lady leaflet droppers even know about this part of their manifesto. Labour have received all the flack on women's rights and the LDs have been pretty quiet.

FourChimneys · 30/06/2024 19:50

Tontostitis I can well believe that, I had very similar in some local elections a couple of years ago.

LibDems do not want GC votes. I know several people who used to be loyal LibDemmers but now wouldn't touch them with a barge pole for this very reason.

Why are they so willing to alienate their former supporters? Do they want to be wiped out I wonder?

VeronicaBeccabunga · 30/06/2024 19:52

My LibDem candidate told me that all the political parties recognise the legal definition, which is anyone who identifies as a woman.
I cannot vote for anyone who thinks this is actually legally correct, so I told her so and shut my door.

GateauxBlaster · 30/06/2024 19:54

I live in what was a Conservative safe seat until the Con council went bankrupt due to making repeatedly stupid and/or corrupt expensive decisions. Now it's heading to be a Lib Dem seat. They wrote to my sons and my husband yesterday. Usually they just write to DH so it's nice they acknowledge there are other men in the house.

Ingenieur · 30/06/2024 20:33

@Crouton19 , you're not far off on the socks-and-sandals look!

I was umming and ah-ing about spoiling my vote, but a quick look at Helen’s webpage has got me mulling over my options to keep him out. The Conservative candidate is a Brexit-backing Suella Braverman fan. What a choice! Our area is a new constituency, and none of the candidates have been an MP before. I genuinely cannot stomach the idea of any of them representing me.

I spoke to my local lib dem soon to be MP on Friday and was mightily relieved! He agreed his party have had some odd views on the gender stuff and he has 4 daughters and strongly believes in safe spaces / single sex spaces for women and girls. I will be holding him to this when he gets his he job!

Geiyotue · 30/06/2024 21:42

My local candidate did the same! Just stomped off and wouldn't have a conversation. I emailed him and he said the topic was toxic on both sides, but I'm only seeing difficulty from him. They are scared of a conversation about it.

Anyway, he's lost my vote so I'm going conservative as that's my only other viable choice here

Crouton19 · 30/06/2024 22:09

@GateauxBlaster Are you in Woking?

@Geiyotue I now take the "both sides" response to indicate the person is so stupid or ill-equipped to justify their position that they feel uncomfortable having to speak about the issue and mistake their own discomfort for toxicity. "That you cannot explain your reasoning to me or lack logic does not mean that my question or stance is toxic".

It's not that the Lib Dems are cowardly, rather that they are active believers and intransigent when it comes to any critique. I sussed this out about them some years ago when it came to discussions with local Lib Dem councillors on the issue. The door is firmly closed shut when it comes to debate.

Billy Connolly the well known political pundit always advised

  • “don’t Vote! it only encourages them!”
RufustheFactualReindeer · 01/07/2024 08:29

Wasn’t it lib dem in the 2019 election who said that if you didnt agree with them on gender issues that you shouldn’t vote for them?
