Rosie Duffield or Conservative candidate

RosieRight · 28/06/2024 09:47

Just to say, I don't want this thread derailed with the die hard 'Tories are evil, over a decade of blah blah blah'. I am a one issue voter so not interested in holding my nose.

However, I am in Rosie Duffield's constituency. I plan to send an email to the conservative candidate but I've been quite ill so haven't had time to do so am not sure if they will respond.

I do not want labour in or contribute to labour getting in. I think the threat to freedom of speech and women's rights is far more threatening than another term by the Tories. Yet I can't ignore that Rosie has been Stella on this issue.

Tactically I can either vote for Rosie, and unwittingly contribute to Labour getting in.

Or

Vote for the Tory candidate and lose her voice and bravery.

What would you do? What have you asked local new candidates? Does anyone in Rosie's area know what they will do?

I agree vote Rosie. It’ll be crucial to have GC voices in Labour if they win the election. Last thing we need is this issue becoming a left / right issue.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 30/06/2024 12:43

I loathe Labour at the moment but I would definitely vote for Rosie.

TeamPolin · 30/06/2024 12:50

My position is Labour are going to win. So if the Labour candidate you have is broadly GC & likely to speak out, they are probably worth voting for.

I agree with this...

DramaLlamaBangBang · 30/06/2024 12:58

I would say vote for Rosie because Labour are likely to get in, and she needs to be there to hold Labours feet to the fire on this one. Unless there is sn absolute Earthshot you will get a Labour government whether you vote Tory or not.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/06/2024 09:59

I think it's pretty sure Labour will win this election whatever you do. It'd be a real shame if they did it without Rosie!

So for sure, I'd vote for her. Actually I'd have thought many traditionally conservative voters would. Representative democracy does depend on the calibre of the specific representatives not just the party affiliation.

I agree. Labour is almost certain to get in anyway. Disaster for women — and I’ve voted Labour for most of my life, though not this time obviously. It will be even worse without Rosie.

notsofantastic · 30/06/2024 13:11

I would vote for Rosie (especially if she is a good MP currently). We need change in the labour party and the more GC labour MPs the better. Your conservative candidate doesn't sound great either...

kiterunning · 30/06/2024 13:14

Vote for Rosie!
She's such a strong ally on women's rights.
I suspect that Labour wouldn't care if she lost.

Namechange98242 · 30/06/2024 13:17

Hi OP, just to say that I am also in Rosie's constituency and was also having a similar dilemma (except I'd already found out Louise's TWAW stance from her Twitter and so she was not in the running despite me mainly voting Tory in the past!).

From the IPSOS predictor, it shows that Rosie is likely to win with quite a large margin, so I think I feel safe not to vote for her (obviously I want her in Govt, but I really hate the thought of giving KS my vote).

I think I will vote for the SDP candidate.

I don't think a vote for Rosie would be interpreted as a vote for Starmer - he's treated her disgracefully and the more support she has the shoddier he looks.

anyolddinosaur · 30/06/2024 14:18

If I was in her constituency I'd vote for her - and be a member of the local party to help ensure any attempt to deselect her failed. But I'd email Starmer saying the only reason he had my vote was because it was personal support for the candidate.

PriOn1 · 30/06/2024 14:21

I’d be overjoyed to be able to vote for Rosie. Quite apart from anything else, I’d be delighted to see her with a massive majority to give two fingers to all the Labour Party grifters who don’t support her.

I agree Labour are fudging transgender issue although I believe the dial is shifting in the right direction, but I would be interested if you have any thoughts of their plans in other areas of womens rights? They sound promising to me. For example they aim to provide more protection to victims of domestic abuse. Their proposed “Raneem’s law” will require police to respond faster to reports of domestic violence and to consider immediate use of orders to protect women. The law will put domestic abuse specialists in 999 control rooms to make sure victims are responded to urgently.

They also plan to establish 80 new rape courts across and England and Wales to fast-track cases as part of wide-ranging plans to tackle violence against women and girls.

Doesn't this make it even more bizarre that they want to get rid of the so-called spousal veto?

RosieRight · 30/06/2024 15:21

I don't see the point in engaging in Labour's promises to women when they can't even define them. How to can you protect a category that doesn't exist? Anything they bring in will apply to men too and not be targeted to help actual women.

I also look at actions rather than words and whilst when I was younger I would have said labour was the feminist choice, their lack of women's opportunities and voices in their ranks speak volumes.

"They also plan to establish 80 new rape courts across and England and Wales to fast-track cases as part of wide-ranging plans to tackle violence against women and girls."

Well they'll need these if they open up women's spaces to men, which they will.

This is a fairly obvious choice to me, if labour makes a cake of shit for women to feast on, don't really care what icing and sprinkles they put on top.

Hi, I feel similar to you but we are lucky to have Rosie as MP. I have donated to her campaign and will vote for her. I would be devastated if Labour won the elections but Rosie lost her seat. It would be seen as a confirmation that people disagreed with her stance on women's rights.

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 30/06/2024 23:27

I would vote for Rosie in a heartbeat. We need strong feminist advocates for women within Labour. Labour is going to win anyway but Rosie will not hesitate to speak out loudly when the pro-TRA lobby start clamouring for all of the sweeties now now now. You won't help women's rights by voting for a tory alternative.

RDMPrules · 30/06/2024 23:28

Hi neighbour.... I had this discussion with my dh who doesn't want to 'vote for Starmer'. As I see it, if Labour get in power, as looks likely, it is even more important that people like Rosie keep their seats. She may not have much power but she is willing to stick her neck out and make it tricky for Labour to ignore the GC section of society. Whenever I see one of these 'write to your MP about this issue' things, re women's rights and safeguarding of children I already know Rosie knows my viewpoint and agrees. It's reassuring to feel there's someone 'on my side'.

blackcherryconserve · 30/06/2024 23:31

100% Rosie all the way.

ScrollingLeaves · 30/06/2024 23:33

BackToLurk · 28/06/2024 09:54

Your conservative candidate.

Some nuggets

"Our community is known for its inclusivity, exemplified by hosting the largest Pride event in Kent, which has become the social highlight of the year. "

"I believe that women's safe spaces are vital in our community." (Safe spaces!)

"the broader conversation on gender issues must also encompass the safety and respect of all individuals, including those who might feel marginalised or overlooked. It is not enough to solely focus on one group; our efforts must strive towards a system that promotes equity for everyone. Members of the LGBT community also deserve respect and privacy, including the simple dignity of being able to use restrooms without fear or harassment."

I know who I'd trust in a parliamentary democracy

Given this woman as the Conservative candidate, I would choose Rosie.

This candidate manages to sound rather like Kier oddly enough. It is strange unless she is dissembling in order to try to catch some Labour TWAW voters.

Notahandmaid · 30/06/2024 23:49

I would absolutely vote for Rosie if she was a candidate in my constituency, for all the reasons that people have already said above. I wish I had such an easy choice in my constituency. I am really torn for the first time in my life.

I really wouldn't rely on the IPSOS predictor, as the circumstances here are out of the ordinary due to the TRA factor. Consider it a personal vote for her rather than one for the party. I really wish I was in her constituency.

sashh · 01/07/2024 03:33

RosieRight · 28/06/2024 09:56

Omg really? I'm having second thoughts about emailing her then as don't want to put myself to a believer.
That does make the choice more obvious I just really don't want to be responsible for getting the labour party in for their gender colonisation.

But Labour with Rosie Duffield speaking up is better than not having a voice at all.

I would not hesitate to vote for her.

HereForTheFreeLunch · 01/07/2024 09:04

Gosh! With Rosie as your candidate I would have thought it was a no brainer. Vote for her.

I have given up on the national choices in order to decide and am looking local. My local labour candidate is terrible (corruption similar to what the Tories have done at a national level. The Tory is only slightly, fractionally better. Good enough to vote for him? I don't know.

Floisme · 01/07/2024 11:19

The best rebuke I can think of for Keir Starmer would be an increased majority for Rosie Duffield. I would vote for her without hesitation and only wish I could.

OvaHere · 01/07/2024 12:16

I would vote for Rosie in your position. Labour are going to win anyway and it would be very convenient for Starmer and the party if Rosie went away.

The last thing we need is to make it more convenient for Starmer to ignore us and further decimate our rights once in office.
