Queer Theory & "Violence" - [Fun activity]

To start, what examples have you found where queer theory (and other critical theories) have said that constitutes violence?

  1. Microaggressions (e.g. asking the "wrong kind of questions") https://thelinknewspaper.ca/article/microaggressions-are-a-form-of-violence
  2. Censorship ("Censorship is an expression of violence – towards thought, ideas, and, in the words of Alfred Stieglitz, the “vital expression of the self”. Violence has no place against the self, and no place in art.") https://www.change.org/p/protect-free-speech-petition-to-peter-schaufuss-st-stephen-s-church
  3. Misgendering https://www.campusreform.org/article/misgendering-is-an-act-of-violence-university-argues-/23354
  4. Silence https://www.allyenergy.com/blog/white-silence-is-violence

And what do you think should be added to the list, and why?

  1. Pineapple on pizza: Many people openly dislike the idea of adding pineapple to pizza. Pineapples also contain enzymes which tenderize meat, and could constitute a form of low-level violence as the enzymes have a digestive effect in the mouth. Additionally, the imagery of a pineapple shape is quite spiky and therefore could be interpreted as a hostile fruit (unlike the peach, which is fuzzy and therefore a much kinder offering).
  2. Hockey socks and birkenstock sandals being worn at the same time: A lot of people find a socks and sandals combination jarring and this may make them feel unsafe. You are encouraged to avoid hockey socks (specifically the white ones with red or blue striping at the top) with brown birkenstock sandals as this is the most aggressive combination.

I'm pretty sure free speech is violence. I googled it and that seems to be what the New York Times was asserting in 2019. It's behind a paywall so I couldn't be arsed archiving it to read it but just below was a link to an article about the article which quoted a big chunk of it

https://reason.com/2019/10/04/ucr-violence-speech-new-york-times/

The New York Times Says 'Free Speech Is Killing Us.' But Violent Crime Is Lower Than Ever.

The 2018 Uniform Crime Report contained bad news for pessimists but good news for everybody else.

Chersfrozenface · 24/06/2024 17:56

Apparently free speech is right wing, and since right wing = fascist and fascist = violent, our equation is complete.

lcakethereforeIam · 24/06/2024 18:00

Can't argue with that solid logic.

XChrome · 25/06/2024 01:01

Perfume. I'm allergic to it. Therefore, anybody wearing it has committed violence against my person.

Realtors who insist on pretentiously calling a room "the space." They have aggressively misidentified it, which could make a home buyer feel unsafe.

Double, queen and king beds in hotels. They could make single people feel inadequate and unrepresented, yet hotels routinely offer them and do not offer single beds. They are violently aggressing on the self esteem of single people.

My ex husband's face. For obvious reasons.

TempestTost · 25/06/2024 01:40

I am pretty sure pineapples are queer, they are some sort of polygamous symbol.

lonelywater · 25/06/2024 01:50

Trouser presses. By insisting (by virtue of their very existence) on a hierarchy of sartorial elegance by their use, they clearly reinforce the lower socio-economic status of tramps/dossers/street wino's. This is an outrageous state of affairs and Palestine will never be free, until....something or other.

GerbilsAllTheWayDown · 25/06/2024 09:26

Marzipan - its floral sickliness makes me want to be sick. Therefore it performs violent aggressions against me.

I was told with great confidence by a 24-year-old last week that time is violent and non-consensual. I’m presuming the same goes for gravity.

Glovenove · 25/06/2024 10:14

"Reaching out", with its horrible, folksy, faux-friendly overtones, makes me uncomfortable and is a form of violence against my peace of mind in work. Please just contact me instead.

FranticFrankie · 25/06/2024 10:23

Time is definitely non-consensual. It flies when you’re on holiday and drags at work. Doesn’t care does it? Wanton disregard for how you’re feeling at any time.
Not sure it’s violent though
And sweetcorn-doesn’t ask me if it can sneak into my guts hidden under cheese on a pizza? Performing micro aggressions on me??Even if I can usually spot it at 10 paces.
It’s a conspiracy

AlisonDonut · 25/06/2024 10:33

My favourite microagressions are:
Not making eye contact.
and
Making eye contact.

Also:
Posting pictures of the most binary of the binaries...

In a similar vein, I'm sure it's a microaggression to not "educate yourself", but also a microaggression to ask questions.

Tuneless whistling - I don't think I need to expand

Giggorata · 25/06/2024 15:41

Remarking on a nice sunny day is actual violence to me, as I am one of those pale blue people with freckles who cannot be in the sun. It is both triggering and othering, too.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 25/06/2024 15:55

Thank you for starting a most worthwhile thread.

Just as it's important to establish what violence is, it's also important to establish what violence is not.

Referring to a bearded man in a dress as 'he' is violence.
Punching a terf however, is not violence.

Banning children from being subject to untested medical experimentation is violence.
Getting onstage to accept an award for your illustrious acting career and wishing death on a Black woman is not violence.

Banning males from using a lesbian only dating app is violence.
Tweeting rape and death threats at a famous female author is not violence.

Happy days!

lcakethereforeIam · 25/06/2024 16:02

Calling invertebrates that aren't bugs 'bugs' should be deserving of a custodial sentence. Calling spiders 'insects' deserves the death penalty 💀

This might partly explain my problem with genderism.

Do you count bugs as any insect with a sucking mouthpart, or are do you only include hemiptera? Taxonomy is soooooo cishetnormative, you're such a bigot!

OP posts:
GerbilsAllTheWayDown · 25/06/2024 17:12

Actually, taxonomy is also like totally colonial!

We should reclassify animals into "huggable" and "non-huggable", that sounds much less violent (even if it results in death from hugging animals that look huggable but really aren't e.g. brown bears).

Or use a Pokémon classification system based on the abilities of the animals themselves - using this Japanese method will be much more effective, because everyone knows Eurocentric ideas are wrong and just generally oppressive.

I'm not an entomologist but I know a bug when I see one!

Love this thread, just not witty enough to contribute 😂

Perfume. I'm allergic to it. Therefore, anybody wearing it has committed violence against my person.

In similar vein, Lush. The sickly smells that waft out of their shops and assail my nostrils (if I've not noticed the sign and crossed the road) is definitely violence.

Lush in stations, even worse. You can't escape, you have to get to the platform your train is leaving from.

PopeyesChicken · 25/06/2024 19:00

Friendship is violence. Socially anxious people experience attempts to befriend them as intrusive and hostile. Furthermore the cultural normalising of ‘friendship’ and ‘friendliness’ serves to other people with no friends.

In all seriousness, going by one of those kinds of shops gives me an instant headache. So I could actually make the argument that my rights are being violated.

Chersfrozenface · 27/06/2024 08:12

And now the economy is violent.

I am doing my best to keep a straight face.

From the Grauniad (indeed, where else?) - my bolding.

"There’s all the gay flags and the celebrating of otherness, but is it just performative if the queer spaces we are celebrating are unable to continue in the face of the violent economic landscape?”
