Under the system, two of the three male candidates secured the posts while none of the four girls who put themselves forward were chosen.
The school is facing a backlash from parents and female pupils who claimed that girls are being denied opportunities under the supposedly “progressive” policy.
Securing the posts can boost university applications and offer other opportunities such as public speaking.

East Renfrewshire Council, which runs the school, said the move away from head boys and girls was part of a national trend designed to “allow for greater equality”.
However, feminist campaigners claimed that the supposedly forward-thinking move would limit opportunities for female pupils while handing an advantage to boys.

Marion Calder, a director at the For Women Scotland campaign group, said: “There have been multiple studies which show that in this type of election, girls are perfectly willing to vote for boys but boys will typically only vote for other boys.

“This is yet another misplaced policy in the guise of equality which in reality leads to the erasure of females and denies girls opportunities.
“It is no wonder that parents are up in arms. This school and any others that have adopted this regressive change should immediately scrap it and return to a system that has served them well for decades.”

The school is currently in the process of applying for charter status from the controversial charity LGBT Youth Scotland, which advises against use of words such as boy and girl in classrooms.

The organisation advises schools that terms such as “head pupil” are “more inclusive” as alternatives may distress pupils who identify as transgender or non-binary.

School tells parents dress is banned to make uniform ‘gender-neutral’

Parents of Lincolnshire primary ‘outraged’ after being told the 'option to wear a red gingham dress' had been removed

Many thanks. Fuck that noise.

Seems a general rule these days that whenever you hear the phrase 'more inclusive', the nett result is bad news for women and girls.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 22/06/2024 15:23

Are they fucking stupid…more equality my rear end

shouldn’t be in charge of children if they are that daft!

Nothing to see here.
They have just stopped selecting the posts based on sex
Just happens to be 2 boys this year. Might be 2 girls next year.

Most people want to move towards picking thd best people for roles rather than a do we have a one of everything tick box.

What, like parliament 'just happens' to be male dominated? And all of the FTSE100 top companies leadership posts? And all of the highest paid actors and sports people? All those men were just the best for the job and women need to try harder?

Nothing to see here.

duc748 · 22/06/2024 15:49

Most people want...

Do they? Do they really? I think what most people want is fairness. I'll just say, it might be two girls next year, but I know where my betting money would be going. Based on what's happened everywhere that similar measures have been instigated.

StainlessSteelMouse · 22/06/2024 15:51

"Controversial charity" is quite the description of LGBTYS. How this outfit still has so much sway over public life in Scotland boggles my mind.

onlytherain · 22/06/2024 15:52

@kitsuneghost Except that boys/men are still often chosen, even if they are less qualified than the female candidates. There is a lot of research on this.

Tsk anyone would think we were in a patriarchy. Parliament is 75 per cent male, because the majority of men are best for the job. They know what's best for women, just like a head boy knows how best to lead and motivate the girls.

Did you read the bit that said: “There have been multiple studies which show that in this type of election, girls are perfectly willing to vote for boys but boys will typically only vote for other boys."?

Do you understand how that skews the results?

Let’s not worry about any of the actual girls who might be distressed by being completely written out of everything. As long as the couple of they/them’s, that might or might not exist are centred, then everyone HAS to be happy.

What happened when a primary school went gender-neutral

When Leni Boudewijn discovered that she was expecting a girl, she prepared a pink themed nursery.

I'm not sure how your comments relate to the article you quote "What happened when a primary school went gender-neutral", which isn't anything directly involving transgenderism. The article sounds very positive and (apart from the toilets) sounds like something that we should be supporting - trying to change the differential treatment of girls and boys, and the expectations that each sex will behave in a certain way. I'll look out for the documentary.

That's because she didn't intend to comment on that 2017 Telegraph newspaper article. That link is there because I copy-and-pasted part of the current MSN article that is the subject of this thread, complete with MSN's choice of embedded hyperlinks.

I should've previewed and edited the random hyperlinks out, but I didn't.

It is more equal for the boys and they are the important ones. Girls need to learn that they are the second class citizens and school is the perfect place for that...

I thought that's what gender neutral meant; male normative. Inclusivity means inclusive of men and boys. Obvs.

That's the only logical conclusion, isn't it? They're sucking up to the notorious LGBYS group, which has had a number of sexual abuse scandals, why on Earth would they want to have anything to do with them?

The Scots are pouring money into them. I have no idea whatsoever why trans ideology in schools is a priority over anything else.

Appalonia · 22/06/2024 22:25

Progressive, inclusion, diversity etc are all words that are now being used to EXCLUDE actual females. I don't think even George Orwell could have predicted how this could have turned out this way, he was talking about something very different, but the concepts are the same.

SO TIRED OF THIS SHIT!!!

No way. I'll never forget reading a study that showed when schoolgirls spoke 50 per cent of the time in a mixed-sex class, teachers perceived them as talking too much. Girls need equal opportunities down on paper otherwise they don't get them.
