Will losing the whip hurt him in any way? Will he just get it back for apologising? I'm so fed up of lefty progressive men getting away with abusing women.

'Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer told reporters the comment was "particularly inappropriate" and the whip was withdrawn "very swiftly".
This means Lord Cashman will sit as a crossbench peer in the House of Lords, without a party affiliation.'

Lord Cashman

Labour peer Lord Cashman suspended for Rosie Duffield post

Lord Cashman criticised candidate Rosie Duffield for withdrawing from local hustings over safety fears.

Yes I know what happened. But will losing the whip matter to him? It hurts MPs for eg they may not be able to stand at next election but what does that matter to a life peer?

Wouldn't be surprised if he joins the Lib Dems or Greens.

User1974 · 17/06/2024 21:59

What did he tweet? I can't find it

fiskalunatic · 17/06/2024 22:01

He tweeted that Rosie Duffield was 'Frit or lazy' because she didn't go to hustings for reasons of her own security. On the anniversary of Jo Cox's murder.

Did Starmer actually say Rosie Duffield's name or was that a bridge too far...

EmilyGilmoreenergy · 17/06/2024 22:29

I read about this , please can someone tell me what 'frit'means ?

Crossbenchers are peers who either had no party affiliation when they were enobled or who have resigned their party whip without joining another party. Peers who lose the whip are unaffiliated.

It's just slang for "frightened".

EmilyGilmoreenergy · 17/06/2024 22:34

Thankyou @Underthinker (I can't just do the thank thing as I use the crappy app).

LunaNorth · 17/06/2024 22:35

The contempt that men hold for women never fails to take my breath away.

I know, NAMALT. But enough of them fucking are, and here’s another fucker. It’s so tiring.

simmertime · 17/06/2024 22:35

It presumably means he.won't have a role in the incoming labour government. But I doubt that was going to happen anyway.

It should mean he will lose the benefits of a party affiliation. Things like access to support, research, press support and other parts of a political machine.

SmugglersHaunt · 17/06/2024 22:37

He’s vile. Hope he’s out of Labour for good

LunaNorth · 17/06/2024 22:39

Last time I looked he was Barry’s boyfriend in Eastenders 🤷🏼‍♀️

Tell the Beeb!

sundaysathome · 17/06/2024 22:58

Colin from Eastenders would've thought Michael Cashman was a dick

What! The BBC gets the structure of the second chamber of UK legislation wrong. I don't believe it. Have they checked with BBC Verify?

I would rather read the Dorset Echo for a clear understanding of constitutional affairs.

And he’d have been right.

In a word.

No.

He's a peer. It makes fuck all difference other than who might want to eat lunch with him

Abhannmor · 18/06/2024 08:13

Cashman is very much on the right of the Labour Party I think. But then so is Rosie Duffield. This is definitely not a Left/Right issue. Cashman might be doing KS a favour. He gets to look more even handed , although he is probably gutted at having to suspend his fellow Blairite.

'Frit' is a dialect word for 'frightened' but it has particular connotations in a political sense, as Margaret Thatcher famously used it in an exchange with Denis Healey, in which she accused him of being 'frit' of a possible general election. It gets bandied about now and again, with the ghost of MT looming in the background.

Abhannmor · 18/06/2024 08:44

Oh so Cashman channeling his inner Tory @wry .

anyolddinosaur · 18/06/2024 09:01

Of course if he had criticised Rosie at any time other than in the middle of an election campaign Kier would have done nothing.

Wry · 18/06/2024 09:14

It's a telling choice of words, ime. I think he's implying she's trying to avoid politically awkward exchanges or challenges on her position but it ignores the reality that death threats are, well, pretty frightening for the recipient.

I don't know if Michael Cashman would go as far as to say he doesn't believe she's had death threats but...
